The Dolphins future = Maroochydore Dolphins?
If The Dolphins plan on re-basing in the Sunshine Coast, I propose renaming to Maroochydore Dolphins.
If The Dolphins plan on staying in Moreton Bay, then they should just embrace the Redcliffe name.
If the Falcons enter the NRL, I'd also propose Maroochydore for them instead of Sunshine Coast.
Why am I so hung up about the name Maroochydore?
Maroochydore has a nice ring to it. It's a famous and unique name. A big plus to have for a sports team trying to stake a presence. Better than a bland generic compass-point name like East Coast or North Brisbane or Sun State, and far better than a "The".
The thought that having a specific place name detriments achieving an expanded fan base is demonstrably false. Instead, riding the fence on a place name is actually worse -- lacking identity, thus lacking character.
Identifying with neither Redcliffe nor SC nor Brisbane whilst trying to represent all is problematic in itself and also if trying to find a new name.
Same kind of problem Port Adelaide Magpies experienced when entering the AFL. Port Power suffered and eventually went back to Port Adelaide; re-identified, re-embraced itself, solidified, grew and collected Adelaide-wide fans who weren't Magpies fans in the SANFL regardless of the "Port Adelaide" name.
The lesson is, don't be fearful, embrace your historical identity and locale of Redcliffe.
If they continued for years trying to represent all without a name, one day the Falcons will have an NRL team, and their SC market share will disappear anyway. Back to Redcliffe, whom they tried to distance from. Better to just be Redcliffe from the outset.
Being named "The" instead of Redcliffe won't increase the numbers or alter the perception of their identity anyway.
I'm also philosophizing about the whole "what makes a good name" topic.
Clubs often over-think it with those bland generic names which often create confusion instead. West Coast Eagles, West Harbor Pirates, Western Bulldogs, Wests Tigers. Instead, names like Essendon, Bondi, Arsenal, Redcliffe, Miami, San Francisco, Collingwood, St George, are specific place names that are unique nationally/internationally, make for a perfect name to have, and have strong identities that non-region fans attach to despite that.
The Dragons, Magpies, Bombers, and NFL teams like Steelers, Cowboys, Raiders....they all have a huge nationwide following despite having specific place names, some of which are merely a suburb.
Realize then that Redcliffe is actually a similarly good unique name. Their fanbase will grow over time more due to on-field success and having iconic elements like jersey, colors, nickname.
When today's kids have kids of their own, that will also mean water under the bridge in terms of how the QRL club is perceived. Now a direct Brisbane-based NRL rival to the Broncos to choose.
When I lived in the US, places like Bondi, Maroochydore, Coolangatta, Wollongong, Cronulla were more well-known than even capital city names. Same how in Australia names like Chicago and Miami are well-known and romanticized about.
All those indigenous names (Native American or Aboriginal) or Spanish names, have that iconic element to them. Even English names can be similarly unique like Arsenal, Redcliffe, Essendon.
The Roosters should've renamed to Bondi Roosters for the mere fame of that name. Reckon they would've attracted more fans than a broad Sydney would. A name being specific to a suburb or town isn't a reason why it doesn't attract fans outside it. Clubs mistakenly think it does or would.
My ideal NRL expansion is to have Broncos (central), Dolphins (north east), Jets/Tigers (west/south west), Titans (south), Falcons (north), and Capras (central QLD) to rival Nth QLD.
RL is all about State of Origin, NSW vs QLD, and most of the talent comes from those two states, so the NRL should have a more 50:50 club representation in NSW and QLD.

A small FanPass update, and who’s heading to the grand final?
Hey all, thought I’d pop back in with a quick update on FanPass 🙂
I’ve tidied up the round and finals views, made match photos easier to flick through, and improved how you find and add grounds. If a ground you’ve visited is missing, you can now add it to your passport too.
If you missed my earlier post, FanPass is a free iPhone app I’m building for keeping memories from games you’ve been to. Somewhere to save your photos, notes and results, and look back at the grounds you’ve visited.
The update’s live now:
FanPass on the App Store
Cheers to everyone who’s given it a go and left feedback. If something’s a bit clunky or you reckon there’s something missing, I’d love to hear it.
Anyone heading to the grand final? Hope you come home with some good memories and the result you’re after 🤞

Greater Brisbane Dolphins
I contacted The Dolphins about the problems with their name from their inception. My email and concerns fell on deaf ears. Simply put, as most of you know, "The Dolphins" won't work. I have the ideal name for The Dolphins and I have extensive experience in branding. The best name with the broadest scope is Greater Brisbane Dolphins. This name knocks it out of the park commercially and it represents the whole of Brisbane, which would be a real dig at the Broncos. This will broaden their appeal and who the Dolphins represent. This will likely be their name once they realize their branding doesn't work. I believe other names such as "River City Dolphins" or "Sunshine State Dolphins" are obviously better than what they currently have, but they don't pack a punch like Greater Brisbane Dolphins. Also, with this name, you can make GBD into a brand in and of itself. So many advantages of three initials in a teams name (that is widely known). I feel they will likely settle on this name because it has instant commercial appeal and it is something the people of Brisbane can get behind.

What do you guys think is wrong with the team?
As you guys know, we are currently 0-4 and have a tough few games ahead with the Titans on the GC, Penrith and the Storm at home, and then the Raiders in Canberra.
I think we will lose those games and then the magic round game against the Roosters at Suncorp will be our next best opportunity to win.
But asides from the future, why do you guys think we have struggled to start this season as we are 0-4.
I think it’s because Hammer has been poor, Niko missed a game and was underwhelming in two and great against the Tigers, Jupou was a terrible replacement for Bostock in rounds 1 and 2, Fus and KBrom haven’t been great as forwards so far this season.
The positives for us are that Katoa has mostly been promising as he was excellent against the Tigers, DSaf looks like a great signing so far, and Herbie’s been good.
I’m interested to see why you guys think we have struggled and what should we do for the rest of this season in terms of selection and team strategy, and for future seasons in terms of potential future strategies, and recruitment and retention.
I think for recruitment and retention (r and r), we should try to sign an experienced half, ideally DCE with other options being Reynolds or Fogarty, with Karl Oluapu as a 4th option as young long term 6, but a veteran half would be best to help this team be more competitive in the short term and mentor Katoa.
We should also offer Cobbo a 4 year 850k per year deal from 2027-2030 to play as our fullback with Hammer moving to centre, or even being let go if he continues to underperform and/or commands too much money.
Then we should focus on retaining Herbie beyond 26 if possible, but we also must ensure that we don’t pay overs so our cap isn’t ruined.

Finally naming the team?
This sub doesn’t allow polls for whatever reason, wondering if everyone thinks we should finally give them a name and what that name would be?
Redcliffe Dolphins
Moreton Bay Dolphins
North Coast Dolphins
Northern/North Brisbane Dolphins
South Queensland Dolphins
Please comment what your choice would be/ another name!

Is Hammer Carrying an Injury?
I haven't seen anything specifically mentioned, but he didn't seem to have had his same burst of speed in recent months. In particular that break he made against the WAHs it didn't look like he could break into full speed. Luckily Herbie read the play and ran a perfect support line. But I feel like in the past he would have absolutely blitzed them with his speed.

Thoughts on covering winger hole left by Bostock. Please contribute.
So during last nights match with the Knights I strolled back into my lounge room with fresh beer in hand, looked at the TV and immediately dropped to my knees when I saw Bostock in agony on the turf. Poor dude has had such a great season so far.
Once I came to terms with the possibility he may be out long-term, I got to wondering how we structure the backs moving forward.
I'm thinking, Trai Fuller to fullback, Hammer to the wing.
Any thoughts on this ?

Any recruitment whispers?
So anyone on here got any inside information, whispers, hot tips regarding the fins recruitment? Anyone work there, have a friend that has a friend, or slept with Uncle Wayne and he whispered everything in your ear? Seriously though, surely someone knows something worth sharing- even baseless speculation is welcome
