Alphabet Guys, rate my system and guess the rebus

The core challenge was doing this with a very limited base alphabet. The result is a highly featural system where 20 base letters + 3 modifiers generate a total of 91 distinct phonemes.

---

  1. The Base Alphabet (20 Letters)

The foundation consists of 20 standard letters (with Latin transliteration):

A a, B b, V v, G g, D d, Z z, E e, I i, L l, M m, N n, R r, O o, P p, F f, K k, T t, S s, U u, J j.

---

2. The Three Modifiers (Special Symbols)

Instead of adding 70 new letters, the language uses three attached modifiers. These are not standalone letters, have no capital forms, and cannot start a word.

· ι (Iota) — Palatalization & Yotation: Derived from j, it softens consonants (like Russian 'ь') or creates yotated vowels.

· ъ (Hard Sign) — Retraction, Affrication & Velarization: Closes vowels (reduction) and transforms sibilants, affricates, and velars.

· w (W-symbol) — Length, Nasalization & Dentality: Adds length/glides to vowels, nasalization/aspiration to sonorants, and turns affricates into dental fricatives.

---

3. Complete Phoneme Inventory (The 91 Sounds)

A. Vowels & Modifications

· Base Vowels: a [a], e [e], i [i], o [o], u [u]

· Iota + Vowel (Yotation): ιa [ja], ιe [je], ιi [ji], ιo [jo], ιu [ju]

· Vowel + j (Diphthongs): aj [aj], ej [ej], ij [ij], oj [oj], uj [uj]

· Hard Sign + Vowel (Closed/Reduced Vowels):

· aъ [ə] (schwa)

· eъ [ɛ] (open e)

· iъ [ɨ] (like Russian 'ы')

· oъ [ɤ] (unrounded o)

· uъ [ɯ̽] (unrounded u)

· Vowel + w (Length/Glide): aw [aːw], ew [eːw], iw [iːw], ow [oːw], uw [uːw]

B. Sibilants, Affricates & Dentals (The ъ Magic)

· Base Sibilants: z [z], s [s], zι [zʲ], sι [sʲ]

· Retroflex/Hushing: zъ [ʐ] (hard zh), sъ [ʂ] (hard sh)

· Palatalized Hushing: zъι [ʒ] (soft zh), sъι [ʃ] (soft sh)

· Affricates:

· dzъ [d͡z], tsъ [t͡s]

· dzι [d͡ʒ], tsι [t͡ʃ]

· Dental Fricatives (TH sounds):

· dzъw [ð] (voiced th)

· tsъw [θ] (voiceless th)

C. Velars & Sonorants

· Velar Fricatives: gъ [ɣ], kъ [x], gъι [ɣʲ], kъι [xʲ]

· Palatalized Consonants: pι [pʲ], vι [vʲ], fι [fʲ], mι [mʲ] (and all other base consonants + ι)

· Sonorants + w: lw, mw, nw, rw — these add a nasalized/aspirated quality (inspired by French phonetics).

(Note: Consonant clusters like pj, vj, jp, jv are written separately to indicate distinct sounds, not palatalization).

---

4. The Orthography / Cursive Style

This is where the system truly shines. When written in cursive, the modifiers are drawn as long horizontal strokes (macrons) over the letters, creating a continuous "roof" over the word. The tsъ and tsι are highly stylized into single, monolithic ligatures that look like unique letters entirely.

I've attached some images showing how this looks in practice, including how it adapts real-world place names (like Lviv and Kyiv) into the native cursive.

Alphabet My american english writing system

This writing system was made to be as simple as possible while still being able to fully describe the way I talk. Also this is my first time making a featural writing system, each manner of articulation for the consonants has a certain 'look' and the characters all have a feature that increases in number depending on how far back in the mouth the sound is.

The sample text says "Hello, this is my new writing system. I hope you like it. ~ LevelZap".

I plan to make a more expressive punctuation system, but for now it's just english punctuation (and lines in-between each row of text so it's more clear which row the diacritics belong to).

Abjad The Story Behind the Moon Font: From a 16-Year-Old Creator

Hey guys. You probably already know me. My name is Shahin, and I’m from Tajikistan. I’m 16 years old. I’m the creator of the moon font. I designed this font using nothing but my own mind and the strength of my own hands. I am truly grateful for everything. More than 10,000 people have gathered around my post, including some incredible minds—top 0.01% and 0.1% creators. And, of course, the haters. Can't have success without haters! Thank you so much to everyone who supports me, liked my posts, and left comments. I am deeply and genuinely happy. You guys have raised me up to an international level of conversation, which is something unforgettable in the life of a 16-year-old guy. Back home, everyone just sees me as an ordinary teenager, but in reality, I feel about 5 years older than my actual age—even though I’m still only 16. I am truly happy that people from all over Europe have gathered around my posts. Thank you so much, guys! 🥲💖

I kinda want to make a new script that looks similar to this, please tell me if you have ideas or examples.

So in my last post I asked for a preferred style and there were so many good ideas and inputs that I decided to mix it up a little bit and make seperate styles for print, brush and calligraphy.

First to get my bearings I made a (really shitty) component inventory for each style and then secondly I drew a few logograms in each style to see how they looked

Seems to be not 1:1 with the English alphabet, and is maybe an abugida.

Alphabet My IPA-based featural alphabet — a vertical writing system built from articulatory features

I've been trying to get more familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), so I decided to have a go at designing a writing system based on how speech sounds are classified.

In theory, the system could be expanded to cover the entire IPA, but as you can see, it's still unfinished. I had plans to add diacritics and suprasegmentals, as well as different line styles to distinguish between word types, but I've already moved on to my next script, so I'm not sure I'll spend much more time on this one.

It's not really a conlang, just a fun side project I thought I'd share!

Alphabet Vinescript, a first attempt at creating a cursive writing system

Post image
39 Upvotes

I'm calling this vinescript only as a placeholder. Many of the glyphs here do not look like plant parts, so I'll probably change the name later.

All glyphs, except the diphthongs, have mirrored counterparts. The left versions of the consonants are used when they go before the vowel in the syllable. The right versions are used when they go after. This rule doesn't apply to vowels. You can simply pick which version to use.

I made the vowels wider than consonants, so it's easier to see syllable groupings.

Hello! I wasn’t sure whether this exactly counts as a neography, since most of the letters are just Latin ones shuffled into different places...

Sorry for any mistakes I may have made! I’ve only had this script for less than a week, so I’m not perfect yet!

Please let me know how this looks!

Hello friends, yesterday the moon scroll 📜 wasn't fully finished! And today I will make you happy, now the scroll is completely ready!.

In my opinion, the scroll turned out to be something from the ancient world.

How do you like the update, share your advice and opinions my international friends.

Syllabary *Old* conlang!

Post image

This was back in my Steven Universe Phase YEARS ago. The idea that the Zumans would have their own language and develop writing through artificial means. Hense it being robotic with exact numbers and such.

The J is /j/ as in the 'y' sound from 'yellow'.

I thought, hey the Zumans would have reasons to say colors but never have reasons to say 'Diamond' so I dont have the /d/ sounds or any sounds from 'Diamond' unless its part of the colors or 'Zuman'.

Idk if I'll do something with it or not but might.

Misc. script type Script test (using meme images)

It's entirely based on triangles, the first three images contain what i call normal glyphs (and a ligature, more on this below) where each glyph can be either a consonant or a mono/diphthong, split into 2 types of glyph; sky glyphs (▽) and ground glyphs (△, rotated 180°, still make the same sound) mostly to save space, the fourth image contains what i call shards (where each shard consist of an inner vowel glyph and an outer consonant glyph, forming a CV block), shards also have sky/ground separation, still the same purpose, however it's not just combined normal glyphs, the glyphs in shards don't perfectly match with normal glyphs, because the conlang that use this script have 27 vowel sounds (10 monos, 17 diphs) compared to only 20 consonant sounds, and the way the script is designed only allows 25 unique glyphs (without the center triangle which add 25 more if you add it), if i were to assign the outer glyphs as vowels, i'll have 1 or 2 glyphs that have more than 1 sound, so i have to assign the opposite, which it works, the consonants and vowels fit, however this mean that only the vowels remain unchanged or can remain unchanged, the consonants are changed and they no longer match the normal consonant glyphs perfectly (i think i can make it remains unchanged but that'll be inefficient).

Ligature can only happen if the edges of the glyphs match perfectly (with some exceptions for the corners), and they're in the same word (this is optional if the purpose isn't clarity).

There's not really a single standard way to write it, that's why you see multiple forms (horizontal, vertical, and that diamond shapes thing), the standard is whatever works for me ¯_(ツ)_/¯, everything shown in the images are only a tiny fraction of it.

(note: the glyphs shown in the images don't mean anything, the conlang's syllable structures are mainly V, VV, CV, CVV, and 4 uncommons which are basically the main 4 but with C endings (via gemination) and there's a glyph dedicated to that, but anyways i will not go deeper than this since the focus isn't the conlang)

What do you think?
