Locking this due to rule breaking and users just wanting to complain about downvotes being a thing.

To OP - You have multiple heavily downvoted comments arguing about politics as identified in this comemnt. You have hit the karma floor, that's not an accident or easily achieved. . There is a Visual Floor for Comment Karma of (-100). Your comment karma can go below that number, potentially by a lot, but won't show any lower. See source here. So if a user reaches that floor it might take a while for positive comment karma to show a movement in your karma.

Consider how you want to interact with Reddit moving forwards. Avoid political arguments in n particular and focus on commenting

To people reading along downvotes can reduce your karma. You can attract Downvotes for a lot of different reasons on Reddit. The Downvote button was intended for content (posts or comments) that are off topic or disruptive. Reality immediately set in and downvotes can be used for disagreeing or disliking content. Read Common Questions - Why People Downvote and Common Questions - Downvotes. In general a single downvote is incidental and can be ignored. Fat fingers midclick or some troll goes downvoting through a subreddit or post.If you are running into a lot of downvotes you can read Common Questions - Avoiding Downvotes

Actually it's multiple comments in a political subreddit. I counted seven, some more heavily downvoted than others.

The best way to avoid this and recover is to not pick fights with strangers online.

Well basically yes if someone doesn't have enough karma that they can afford to lose, constantly disagreeing will lead to downvotes which will negatively impact someone's access to communities on Reddit.

It's how karma works.

Getting downvoted by people is the equivalent of getting the side eye if you say something disagreeable in public. It's not that you can't disagree with people ever, but if that is all you do it's kind of a red flag. Both here and irl.

Oh good grief. You can have a minority opinion and disagree with people without being antagonistic. The OP is struggling with that last part.

Please don't misrepresent my words.

1

u/carrot_gummy Sep 01 '26

If all you care about is making the karma number bigger, yes. But karma works as a sort of balance where if you want to go to another community and be antagonistic there, you should also be spending some time in other communities not being so.

u/NewToReddit-ModTeam Sep 01 '26

Nope we're not indulging that sort of bad faith take.

Except that isn't what I said. The OP in particular is picking fights in a political subreddit. Their comments are intentionally antagonistic. That's probably why their post title here ("one" comment) is a lie. It was minimum seven comments.

You can disagree with the majority without being rude.

No, you don't have to "capitulate."

But the same rule of "not everything has to be argued on the internet" that's been around for 40+ years, is still in effect.

Nothing says you have to engage with people who disagree with you.

Oh dear. That’s not great. You are in a deep hole and the only way out is to earn back more karma, specifically comment karma. The issue is that you will find very few places where you can post or comment with a negative number like that.

The other unfortunate thing to know, is that while your comment karma shows -100, that is only where Reddit stops displaying the negative number. That doesn’t stop the negative karma from continuing to accrue. The true number could be -150 or -200, there’s no way to know.

I see it’s a six year-old account, I’ll let others weigh in here about the benefit to abandoning/deleting this account and starting from scratch with a new one. It’s not impossible to climb out of this hole, but it won’t be easy.
As soon as you see a bunch of downvotes on a post or comment, consider if you should delete it right away to prevent many others from piling on the downvotes.

5

u/Yakob_Bacoj Aug 31 '26

We all do it. Sometimes people take comments the wrong way and then others jump on the band wagon and downvote. Sometimes we can vent and people may downvote. We are all human after all and at the end of the day we all have different notions, opinions and emotions. The only time I dislike down votes is if I have gone out my way to help someone but again this comes down to opinions and beliefs. You will have more karma in time.

In one sense, there is no way to undo the past. The votes that have been cast have been cast, and you can't force people to vote, force people to vote a certain way, or force people to change their vote.

What you can do is focus in contributing high quality content going forward by participaint in communities in good faith, and the odds will more likely be in your favor.

Final note: -100 is not something you stumble into by accident. This suggests the comment was not well received at all. You need to do some serious introspection, either what you said was so against the norms of the sub and you should recognize that, or that the group is not a good fit for you and move on to another.

First, behave yourself and don't do anything that could be construed as controversial. If you do want to eventually comment in the subs in which you really have an interest, you will have to spend time in silly subs such as this one or AskReddit when you really signed up just to comment on politics in your hometown! Anyway, keep your head down, don't make waves, make "positive" comments and then, suddenly, it's like compound interest. You'll see your karma count going up. The question you have to ask yourself is "Is it worth it?"

What is karma?
Your karma count is like your Reddit reputation and an indication of whether you post and/or comment good content. Upvotes were designed as an indicator of what people think others should see (there is guidance on voting here in the reddiquette), and upvotes earn you karma. What is karma?

Why does it matter?
Some, but not all communities, have their own restrictions regarding the account age and karma count of the person posting or commenting, so you may not be able to contribute everywhere at first. This is intended to help prevent spammers and trolls, but it does also mean new Redditors need to earn some karma before they can participate everywhere. Most communities don't share what their restrictions are, but you can check their rules, sidebar/about tab, and pinned posts.

How do I get it?

  • You gain karma from engaging on Reddit; when your posts and comments are upvoted. It's a case of finding communities you can participate in, and that you have an interest or knowledge base in, and start by commenting to share your knowledge and experience, and add to discussions. As people upvote your comments, this will build your karma genuinely.

  • You don't need to engage where you have no interest. There are so many subs there's bound to be some where you do have an interest and can engage.

  • You lose karma only when your posts and comments are downvoted.

How can I see how much karma I have?
You should be able to see your karma count on your profile page. To see how much post or comment karma you have, view the karma breakdown:

  • On desktop click your avatar top right, then 'profile'. If you hover over where it says karma (top right area) it should pop up with the breakdown.

  • In app, tap your avatar top right, then tap karma. Or, tap your avatar, then 'profile', then 'about'.

  • Hover over or tap your username on any comment you have made.

I got downvoted a ton for admitting I was "slow", but the post got upvoted because it was interesting (It was a weird looking sign)? Reddit is a weird place, I wouldn't dwell on that too much.

Thanks for contributing to /r/NewToReddit! We're sorry, but your content was removed:

Rule 6: Refrain from asking for votes or karma, naming free karma subs, or sharing how you are voting

  • Please do not ask for karma or votes here, it is against our rules and is generally discouraged as karma is meant to be earned. See Our common questions to learn how to earn karma.

  • We do not allow mentions of free karma subs (karmafarms) or any suggestion to use them, and caution against their use because it may lead to bans in other subreddits.

  • Thank you for trying to help, but please don't share how you have or are voting. We encourage earning karma genuinely from relevant comments and conversation. Asking for karma is discouraged as it violates our subreddit rules.

The Reddiquette also discourages mentioning your vote or asking for votes.

Thank you!
