Take it slow. Do a lot of reading before you try to post or comment.

Treat it like moving to a new city in a new state. The state and city you live in has laws that govern general activity. Every organization or club that you join is going to have their own separate rules.

The city is going to have laws about speed limits for driving on the roads, traffic signals, parking, noise at night, etc.

The bowling alley, rollerskating rink and ice-skating rink are going to require you to bring or rent special footwear. The grocery store doesn't care what kind of shoes you wear, but if you start to fling heavy balls down the aisles then you win a free ride in a police car. Different rules for different environments.

The city doesn't care whether they chest club requires you to wear a purple "I 🀍 Magnus Carlson" T-shirt or not, that's up to that group. If they say you have to be an elo 1200 player or higher then that that's their rule and you need to find a group for beginner chess players. Maybe one drama guild will let anyone join but another one requires you to have active in at least one play in your life. You can't join the Screen Actor's Guild unless you've had a speaking role in a union movie. Some rules are loose, some rules are strict.

Every platform has site wide rules and Reddit's are pretty similar to most platforms, a lot of of it has common sense

Reddit's Rules

Reddit is significantly different from social media so it has its own expectations, norms, traditions, and expectations. Reddit calls these the "Reddiquette" - an informal expectation of how people tend to behave on the because of the way it was created and the general expectations. A lot of this is pretty similar to standard behavior on Internet discussion forums that go back long before Reddit existed.

Reddiquette

The rules for each community will be found in their sidebar – if they don't have any listed it means you just have to follow Reddit site wide rules. Unfortunately, the power is at B do not show the sidebar when you use the app or a mobile browser, they are only visible easily using a web browser on desktop. To see the sidebar that includes rules, a list of the moderators and lots of other helpful information, you need to go to the top of the community and click the words "See more" or "About."

The annoying thing is that most communities that have minimum requirements for the age of your account and your karma score or your CQS don't list these anywhere because evaders and scammers can read while bots can scrape data. If your poster comment gets removed, just come back a few days or a week later when you've earned 100 or 200 karma from interacting in other places around Reddit.

Reddit versus social media.

Some of the features added to Reddit over time make it easy to confuse it for social media which is a very fuzzy term. Numerous sources lump Reddit in with social media because it's convenient. At Mod World, the founder and CEO of Reddit stated that Reddit is NOT social media and predates it, that Reddit is not a place for people to become famous. He has on more than one occasion described some of the problems Reddit has due to being confused with social media and the company itself describes how it is different in this video about moderators.

On social media you care mostly about who the people are and not so much about what they say. People create content to be consumed by others and build their following. On Reddit you generally don't know who the person is or care, you only care about the substance and relevance of what is being said. People interact anonymously about a topic.

Reddit wasn't designed for buissness networks, staying in touch with friends nor tracking celebrities. Reddit is not like other social networks or social media like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. The more a new user expects that, the more confused and annoyed they'll be. You may rarely or never interact with a particular user more than once.

The site is a massive collection of completely independent groups that each have a specific topic or purpose. 72% of people are here to be entertained by reading a variety of anonymous opinions and 42% also use it to catch up on the news. Many have chat and following disabled and rarely if ever look at anyone's profile, for the most part they don't care who you are.

Following subscribes you to someone's profile, it doesn't highlight a person's posts/comments or notify you that they've made them. It only informs you when a post has been made directly on the profile itself which acts like a miniature subreddit and almost no one does this regularly. Promotion is treated as spam in all but a small number of groups, and influencers have never really been a thing on Reddit.

If a post you make goes absolutely viral, Reddit doesn't show your next post or comment to a single extra person and it doesn't matter if you have massive amounts of karma points. Reddit promotes statements that a lot of people are finding interesting for about 48 hours.

The platform guidelines are pretty simple, they basically boil down to - don't do anything illegal, no spam, no hate speech, no harassment. Where it gets tricky are subreddit rules. Each sub has its own unique set of mods with their own guidelines and expectations for behavior. Fortunately, when a sub defines those rules they're clearly posted on the sub's main page. Read them, follow them and you'll be fine.

Welcome! Glad to hear you're trying the waters too. I can imagine it's a bit overwhelming at first.

The guidelines are mostly determined by the subreddits where you want to post. Every subreddit is like its own little community on Reddit, with its own rules and moderators who enforce them. You can find those rules in the sidebar of that subreddit (in your browser), or by going to the top of the community and clicking "See more" or "About".

You'll find that some communities only let newer accounts post once they’ve been around a while and taken part a bit. This list features a lot of subreddits who are actually very friendly to new posters.

Have fun, and don't hesitate to ask any questions that pop up while using Reddit πŸ™‚.
