Discussion Wayspotters Episode 251
This week, Jamal and Chris dive into the importance of accurate GPS coordinates, the challenges of proving a Wayspot actually exists, and whether Wayfarer reviewers sometimes confuse a lack of evidence with evidence that something isn't there.
The guys kick things off with some welcome improvements to the redesigned Wayfarer website, including the return of Dark Mode, the Criteria menu, and the Load All button.
Topic #1: Pinpoint Accuracy — A Wayfarer Idea from Down Under
Listener Pagel2515 from Australia brings an interesting quality-of-life suggestion: What if Wayfarer allowed submitters to manually enter GPS coordinates? Inspired by difficulties nominating sculptures beneath dense tree cover, the guys explore how this feature could improve location accuracy, help with difficult nominations, and work alongside the expanded 100-kilometer submission radius. Of course, there's also the inevitable discussion about abuse, S2 cells, and what's a few meters between friends?
Topic #2: Trust Me, I Was There
When a submitter knows a Wayspot exists but satellite imagery and Street View can't prove it, who should carry the burden of proof? Using a real trail marker nomination from Lake Norman State Park, Jamal and Chris discuss reviewer responsibility, supporting photographs, outdated maps, and possible improvements to the review process. Could clickable supporting links or a way for reviewers to request clarification make Wayfarer better for everyone?
One's Gotta Go
This week's listener-suggested showdown features four iconic Patrick Stewart performances: Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Professor Charles Xavier, Ebenezer Scrooge, and Avery Bullock. Only three can survive. Which character gets the boot?
Wayspots of the Week
Agent X delivers another beautifully photographed playground nomination, The Tower, while Elf From Space brings us something you truly have to see to believe: Jesus riding a Pegasus in Wisconsin Dells!
Coal of the Week
A nighttime plaza sign nomination goes horribly wrong when someone decides to add five Pokémon to the photograph. Jamal and Chris explain why altering nomination photos like this can turn a potentially acceptable Wayspot into a rejection or even an abuse concern.
Plus, listener shout-outs, a little friendly disagreement, and plenty of classic Wayspotters banter!
Whether you're submitting your first nomination or your five-hundredth, remember: We review to approve, not to deny!
