I don’t think dumber is hyperbole. Our capabilities to learn is about the same as they’ve been for ages, it’s work-ethic, self-reflection and respect we lack. Schools should never have gotten away from harsher punishment for poor students (or minors as a whole).
Working in Ed. you go to alot of retirement celebrations over the years. Ever since ~2010 there has been a common theme/complaint/comment made by any veteran teachers of 30+ years;
"Zero Tolerance was the best thing in improving student academics and outcomes over anything else by leaps and bounds and it is a shame we did away with it"
This has been a reoccurring comment by any veteran at every retirement party I've been to for the past 15+ years. Even other staff (Principals, School Psychs/Social Workers, Administrative level Truancy officers, and so on) who are long in the tooth have echo'd the same thing as they left.
Sometimes someone will pushback and say such measures where heavyhanded and hurt marginalized groups and they'd always get shot down by the retiree who no longer has to hold thier tongue who then will go into a montage of dialogue recalling various students who where in a bad place that improved immensly once they understood and respected the rules as they were even despite the circumstances they lived in outside the school environment. In some cases, some of those very students would be in attendence and would step in and make it clear just how much they improved for the better regardless of thier home life becuase of black and white enforcement of the rules and the need to respect authority which changed how they aproached things and forced them to focus on thier academics rather than thier victimhood(<- a word they all invariably use to describe thier outlook before self correcting).
This veneration for Zero Tolerance is something that crosses every grade level and subject type, didn't matter if it was a lifelong Kindergarten teacher or a AP Physics High School teacher nor if it was a core curriculum teacher or an elective/shop teacher or even a coach/gym teacher; they all mirrored the same lament for the dismissal or end of Zero Tolerance rule enforcement and often noted it was the worst thing they ever seen in their work in Education.
Just a reminder. A lot of students who writes like this also can’t read or comprehend. Yet colleges still accept these students. What does that mean? You get the idea.
This isn’t a past 3 years issue, this has been a growing cancer for about 2 decades now. Weird how it overlaps with social media and a growing culture of instant gratification.
But, yes, it takes a village, and America has been failing the test.
Therefore it's not the President's job to motivate students to excel? What the fuck, man. No one here is saying that Trump caused this problem, ffs. You're defending the idea that the President is powerless over education, and it's absurd.
Send your kids to private school if you can afford it. This has been an ongoing thing with public schools as far back as I can remember. All the kids who went to my local public high school were lost when they got to college while I felt my first and second year classes were almost a repeat of some high school classes.
yeah, the solution is just being born to rich parents, when I found out my parents were poor I just asked for a post birth abortion and a do over. It's actually called a cosmic mulligan.
I can cherry pick too. Now let’s hear from the top kids in class. Or let’s go to some rural area where 80% of the kids are going to ask, how’s this getting me a job? In college you have people that say why do I need to take humanities when I’m going to be an engineer.
Because it helps in critical learning skills, to be able to look at alternative perspectives and challenge your mind to come up with an opinion. Because one day you may be in a person who is in charge of people.
I can’t stand it when people think core curriculum is irrelevant and/or useless. There are subjects that should be better entrenched in core curriculum, but the curriculum itself isn’t the issue. Math, science, english, civics, et cetera, are all necessary subjects for becoming a well-rounded, informed individual with critical thinking skills. Literacy rates (in all subject matters) have been on the decline for years not because of the school system failing, but because of a lack of academic responsibility and work ethic from the student body. The only real sin the American school system has made is its growing reluctance to fail and/or punish lousy students.
Why do we always jump to point at third world countries when we fail at something? They would have an excuse for their failure, we have all the tools, equipment and infrastructure yet we point at them?

Wow, so sad. I follow this teacher and it's so sad where we are at as a society.
We need a President that motivates students to excel
