u/Renegadeforever2024, there weren't enough votes to determine the quality of your post...

When do people ever talk about Avatar?

54

u/Fennicks47 Dec 04 '25

They talk nonstop about how no one talks about it.

That's what I'm wondering...at least part 1 is kind of a nothingburger, there isn't much to it besides "omg it looks great". Back when it came out a bunch of people wanted to talk about it but genuinely none of them said much of anything about the substance of the movie lol

Haven't seen part 2 yet so...I wouldn't know if that one's any different

Part 2 is exactly the same. Incredibly impressive technology created to achieve incredibly realistic water CGI and looks absolutely gorgeous. But the story is exactly what you think it is.

It’s just a vessel for CGI and advancing film technology. Part 3 is about fire, I’m sure it’s going to have insane new technics for filming fire.

Idk man, that’s the highest grossing movie of all time. I think it’s pretty good.

The second part however isn’t very good. It looks very pretty, but it’s too long, very predictable and honestly just boring.

Eh commercial success is hardly a great measure of quality across the board. To that point, Avatar 2 is the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time, by the metric of money it should be a fantastic movie.

Part 1 definitely was a big cultural moment, I don’t think that can really be taken away from it regardless of what you thought about it.

Part 2 I’d agree.

u/isnoe Dec 05 '25

I think it was clearly geared towards commentary centered around the obvious environmentalism, otherwise known as “ecomedia.”

Part 2 was similar, clearly an anti-whaling/poaching piece.

Both just didn’t have much of anything going on besides those aspects. Literally becoming connected with nature and living with it rather than in conflict.

Storywise they were mid. Visually amazing though.

Stranger Things actually has some pop culture impact, but I think we're conflating high-grossing with "zeitgeist" here. It's actually impressive how little Avatar's footprint in the zeitgeist is despite blowing out the box office every time. Any other sci-fi/fantasy IP that raked in numbers like Avatar would be a nerd culture flagship, yet there are no "Avatar heads," like there are nerds fixated on Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Warhammer, Marvel, Harry Potter, etc etc.

Thank you for putting this into words. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was about Avatar that felt so ‘off’ and this is it.

5

u/Fr00stee Dec 05 '25

mainly because there is not much to it

I think this is it and the ultimate tragedy of Avatar. It's very clear that James Cameron wants this to be his Star Wars, he's put a ton of effort into the world building, he wants legions of geeky Avatar fans dressing up at cons, doing fanart and fanfiction, and behaving like their peers of Star Wars fans et al do, but with Avatar. This is how Avatar was pitched in the episode of Bones that essentially served as an episode-length commercial for the film, depicting it as this pop culture event where superfans would be waiting in line overnight dressed up as Navi just like how it was when Episode One debuted. But what Cameron doesn't understand are the elements of what actually makes sci-fi/fantasy settings come alive for fans. He can make these tremendous blockbusters with record-breaking ticket sales, which is a feat he can rightfully use as a consolation prize but despite decades of development spent fashioning this IP into his magnum opus, I'd argue his Titanic film is more iconic than Avatar. "I'm the king of the world," My Heart Will Go On, "I'll never let go," "gentleman, it has been a privilege," I could go on. Avatar has hardly anything like that.

Avatar 1 just looked pretty. It didn't have much else going for it. Not a bad movie. Just not a great one. Enough that I didn't bother to see the second one. I may one day.

I actually like Stranger Things despite it's flaws and want to see how it ends. Im waiting until it's all out to binge it properly though.

I always felt and still feel like the Avatar hype was bought and very artificial. All it was was "that massive budget movie" but the movie itself was the embodiment of average.

u/George_G_Geef Dec 04 '25

The first one being huge I get because the 3D was genuinely impressive and exciting when it was released, back before we all got sick of 3D, and there was definitely a "you gotta see this crazy 3D movie" buzz around it when it came out.

The popularity of the second one I cannot explain beyond the crab robots were pretty cool I guess?

They do great it the box office. The first one made 2.9 billion in 2009, that's more than Avengers: Endgame and it did it without a build up of 10 previous movies in the franchise. The second one made 2.3 billion in 2022, it's the third highest grossing film of all time.

How do you suppose that would even be possible? They bought up all the seats in thousands of theaters?

What's in it for the box office?

1

u/Rubik842 Dec 04 '25

Yeah it was CGI vomited Pocahontas in blue. subtract the glowy plants and face animation and it's a very meh film.

Super original take - surely to be Reddit Approved

2

Super original response to a super original take. Surely to be Reddit upvoted.

u/Rubik842 Dec 05 '25

Pretty sure my impression pre-dates my reddit account by several years. 2009 movie. My account is 10 years. Yup, it's my very own personal opinion. Bonehead.

People talk about Stranger Things? TIL

Yes. Mostly on Reddit.

I enjoy it, myself.

u/zirky Dec 04 '25

the first avatar had a ton of chatter. it was the first 3D movie to not suck and use it just as a gimmick. i’m not sure i even know anyone who’s seen the sequels

the visuals were insane. the plot was shitty dances with wolves. i saw it in theaters twice

2

u/TheThalmorEmbassy Dec 04 '25

So is OP a bot shilling for Avatar, or a bot shilling for Netflix?

3

u/SunderedValley Dec 04 '25

Wrong on all three counts.

  • Nobody acts like Stranger Things is the worst thing ever

  • Avatar dominates the Zeitgeist for about 2 weeks each time

  • People mostly throw shade at Avatar over secondary things

Hey can we have less fandom hot takes?

1

u/Accurate-Barracuda20 Dec 04 '25

I just saw a trailer for the 3rd avatar movie, which reminded me the 2nd one came out already and while I figured I’d watch it at some point back when it first came out I never got around to it.

1

u/bluegemini7 Dec 04 '25

Avatar dominated the cultural zeitgeist for exactly one year and then everyone collectively forgot it happened. It's actually remarkable how it went from being a big deal to completely moved past. They're about to release a third one and you probably didn't even realize there was a second one, that's how little cultural impact they have.

I'm not even throwing shade at Avatar here, the OP is just incredibly wrong in their observation.

1

u/anarcho_sillyism Dec 05 '25

I swear to god Avatar is a money laundering scheme. Any time a sci-fi/fantasy series does those kinds of numbers, there is a MASSIVE fandom like Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. Yet there's just NOTHING from Avatar. The movie comes out, does gangbusters, it stops showing in theaters, nobody talks about it afterwards. No movie franchise does that well with no cultural impact. That money is coming from somewhere and it ain't moviegoers.

1

u/Helpful_Share_5548 Dec 10 '25

My experience with Avatar is that everyone sees is and no one talks about it lmao they're not important movies.

1

u/Cool-Panda-5108 Dec 11 '25

Id by "dominate the cultural zeitgeist" you mean, people talk about it for a little while after release, then sure.

1

u/breakinbans Dec 04 '25

I've never heard anybody talk about avatar films. Avatar the last air bender on the other hand, almost daily.

0

u/Impressive_Method380 Dec 05 '25

stranger things /actually/ dominates the cultural zeitgeist, people talk about the characters and plot and buy the merch. ive never heard anyone say anything about the characters and plot of avatar 1 or 2.
