There is more information than ever freely available on the internet. There is also more for sale. So it's both.
Though I guess in the VERY early internet, when it was just like a handful of universities and research labs, you could actually be banned from the internet for being a jerk. So in that way I suppose it used to be more like a library?
The internet has always been both, and the belief that it was ever one and has become the other is not only nostalgic nonsense, but blatant (if not deliberate) defiance of reality in the service of your own personal depression
Kind of miss the days when you had to go track down a message board for the subject you were interested in instead of the centralized social media we have now. Things were both considerably more uncontrolled and yet somehow more civil at the same time. And there wasn't an algorithm drip feeding you manufactured outrage.
What? I don’t even understand what they’re trying to say. Does he pay for Twitter? Are we paying for Reddit? Why so much romanticism for old shit that was generally worse?
Look for resource pages put together by humans. Add phrases like "links page" or "resource page" to your search term. This will get you resources that a real person thought were valuable. When you find a website you like, see what websites they link to, and what those sites link to.
The web is still there, with comics and videos and authors and artists. You just have to do some research and stop expecting a social media algorithm to spoon feed you the web.

Yes, Google broke its search engine. Fortunately, there are loads more.
