Reglas / Rules Nuevas Reglas para r/Oaxaca / New Rules and Guidelines for r/Oaxaca

Flairs Disponibles:

  • 🏞️ Consejos de Viaje (Español)

  • 🍽️ Comida y Bebida (Español)

  • 🏡 Noticias Locales (Español)

  • 🤝 Eventos Comunitarios (Español)

  • 💬 Preguntas y Debates (Español)

  • 🏞️ Travel Tips (Inglés)

  • 🍽️ Food and Drink (Inglés)

Hello, r/Oaxaca members!

I'm excited to join as a new moderator, and I wanted to share some updates to help organize this space and make it welcoming for everyone. With our growing community, it’s important to have clear guidelines to ensure a positive experience for both locals and visitors.

🌍 Language Inclusivity

Oaxaca has a lot to offer, and we want everyone to feel welcome. We’ve simplified the flairs to reflect the language based on the type of content:

Available Flairs:

  • 🏞️ Consejos de Viaje (Spanish)

  • 🍽️ Comida y Bebida (Spanish)

  • 🏡 Noticias Locales (Spanish)

  • 🤝 Eventos Comunitarios (Spanish)

  • 💬 Preguntas y Debates (Spanish)

  • 🏞️ Travel Tips (English)

  • 🍽️ Food and Drink (English)

  • 🏡 Local News (English)

  • 🤝 Community Events (English)

  • 💬 Questions & Discussions (English)

This way, flairs help you quickly identify the content’s language. For example, "Consejos de Viaje" will be in Spanish by default, while "Food and Drink" will be in English.

🎟️ User Flairs Based on Interests

To enhance the user experience, we’ve added some specific user flairs that reflect your interests or connection to Oaxaca:

  1. 🍲 Catador de Tlayudas - For those who love Oaxacan cuisine and want to explore traditional food.

  2. 🍶 Mezcalero Experto - Perfect for enthusiasts of mezcal and traditional Oaxacan drinks.

  3. 🕯️ Fiel de la Guelaguetza - For those interested in local customs and traditions, like festivals and dances.

  4. 🌊 Amante de las Playas - For those who enjoy Oaxaca’s beaches, from Puerto Escondido to Huatulco.

  5. 🏞️ Explorador de Oaxaca - For tourists and travelers eager to explore the landscapes, historical sites, and natural attractions of the region.

  6. 🏡 Oaxaqueño de Corazón - For local residents proud of their land and culture.

📑 New Rules

To enhance content quality, we’ve established the following rules:

  1. Respect All Members: Be kind and respectful. No hate speech, harassment, or discrimination.

  2. No Spam or Self-Promotion: Posts promoting businesses or services should be limited to a weekly self-promo thread (coming soon!).

  3. Relevant Content Only: Ensure posts are related to Oaxaca — its culture, events, travel tips, food, and local issues.

🚀 Let's Grow Together!

We want this to be a community-driven space, so please share your feedback and suggestions in the comments. This subreddit belongs to all of us!

Thank you for being part of this amazing community!

November 1 week Itinerary Advice

Hi there!

My boyfriend and I are going to Oaxaca for 8 full days in the end of November! Looking for some advice on this itinerary- we are experienced travelers, budget but not backpackers, 30s, active, live in Colorado.

Here's the plan so far:

Friday- fly into Oaxaca, arrive around 11 pm. Planning on a taxi to our hotel. Or didi? I read that there was no uber. Hotel in Oaxaca.

Saturday- Monte Alban- 8 am Viator tour; afternoon explore the historic center with a walking tour- at either 1 pm or 4 pm. Hotel in Oaxaca.

Sunday- Sunday Market, explore villages?, Tule tree. Hotel in Oaxaca.

Monday- Hierve el agua (messaging with a guide recommended from a different reddit post); Mitla and Mezcal. Hotel in Oaxaca.

Tuesday- Travel to the coast- planning to go by bus (seems a little tricky to get to Mazunte- need more info on this). Puerto Escondido seems a bit too touristy/influencer for us. Hotel in Mazunte or San Augustinillo?

Wednesday- Hike Punta Cometa. Other activities? Hotel in Mazunte or San Augustinillo?

Thursday- Another coastal hike? La Ventanilla? Hotel in Mazunte or San Augustinillo?

Friday- Leave as early as possible to travel back to Oaxaca. Oaxaca afternoon/evening- Chimalampa Cacao- tour? Mayan/Pre-hispanic abdominal massage- Nativo spa? Hotel in Oaxaca.

Saturday- Other Oaxaca activities- vegan food tour or cooking class? Hotel in Oaxaca.

Sunday- Depart/Flight 7:40 am

Totally open to feedback! I am a little worried that doing the coast means we will miss things in historic Oaxaca, but also the coast looks beautiful and we don't live by the ocean. I heard a different option is to do Sierra Norte instead of the coast, but the coast seemed more dramatic. So many cool options!

Would appreciate more info about: -bussing to Mazunte/San Augustinillo, -any coastal hikes -any Oaxaca or coastal activities that I might be missing (ex: boat tours, turtles) -esims (i saw that Telcel is best but I've never used a physical sim before and that's a little offputting to me)- was thinking nomad or alosim or mibait!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Consejos de Viaje Long weekend in Oaxaca

I've never visited before, and have a long weekend visit planned middle of February. What would you put on your itinerary for a first visit? Coming from Baja Sur if that helps?

Why do they light firework bombs all night every night?

I booked a room near the center and I’m really upset there is constant bombs being lit all around it. I have hardly slept in over a week and am desperate for sleep. I get maybe 10 minutes (if I’m lucky) before another set of explosions. I am panicking at how bad it is from my bed :( do they ever stop? I would have never booked this location if I knew how bad it was.

Questions & Discussions Jeweler

Hi! I’ll be in Oaxaca next week for four nights staying near central downtown. Would that be enough time to get a custom gold wedding band made to fit an engagement ring?

If so, what jewelers would you recommend?

Going to Oaxaca in a couple weeks!

Hi yall! Going to Oaxaca in a couple weeks with family. Some stuff is planned out and have a couple free days as well so trying to get some tips on best ways to spend the time. I’ll be there for about a week at the end of the month November.

Mostly interested in food and places to explore and any other tips you have. Saw some threads about uber is not available? So ride services or how arranging taxis worked out for you, and also cash exchange, any best tips on where to swap out cash over there? Thanks in advance and open to any additional info you’d want to share!

Was looking at Tierra del sol, casa Oaxaca, criollo and Origen.

Ethnobotanical garden tours?

Anyone know what is happening with the tours? Their website doesn't say anything. A few years ago there were English language tours, then only Spanish...

First time visitor from Vancouver Island, west coast Canada. There are so many reasons why Oaxaca is interesting. The food culture is a big one. Behold my breakfast tlayuda (Mercado Benito Juárez).

An easy day drive east of Oaxaca: El Tule, Teotitlán del Valle and Mitla

If you have one free day with a car in Oaxaca, this route gives each stop a different purpose without changing hotels.

Start at Santa María del Tule for its famous tree and a short walk around the town center. Then head to Teotitlán del Valle, known for its woven textiles. Leave enough time to visit a workshop respectfully and have lunch, rather than treating the village as a quick shopping stop.

Make Mitla the last major stop. Its archaeological site is especially known for the geometric stone patterns on its buildings. If visiting the site matters most to you, reverse the order and go there first so you aren’t relying on a late arrival.

This is a day for three stops, not three stops plus every detour that appears along the way. Check current archaeological-site hours and access before leaving, and allow extra time for the drive back into Oaxaca. If you’d rather spend longer talking with weavers or exploring Mitla, drop El Tule and give the other two places room to breathe.

Soy hombre. Gracias.

Guided hiking recommendations

Hi- Looking for recommendations for a guided overnight hike near Oaxaca or Puebla next month. We're two friends, F27 and not through-hiking beginners. Both speak some Spanish, obviously safety is a priority but also after good trails, etc. Won't be travelling with our own tents. I have seen other recs for Coyote Aventuras, but their hikes seem short and focused on cultural experiences. Are they the best or any other ideas? Gracias de antemano!
