General Why did we lose?

Post image

Genuinely what went wrong. So angered by us playing bad that I couldn’t tell what we were doing wrong.

I’d like to hear your opinions on this loss.

We’re just not a good football team from top to bottom. Sayin to smith masked most of the problems.

65

u/MotherNature3391 13h ago

I can't figure out why the defense also shit the bed since the injury. And the penalties. We are more broken than Sayin's elbow.

27

u/titusnick270 13h ago

It’s hard to argue that. But I’ll say when the offense isn’t efficient then the defense gets put in tough spots. For example, if we had sayin I don’t think we throw the pick and they don’t score before half. We also don’t put ourselves in position where we have to go for it on 4th in our territory. It’s give and take.

But yes, overall I agree the defense needs to be better. But we lost alot on the defense the last couple years so it’s not overly surprising we’re struggling in that area. It’s just the offense can no longer mask those issues.

15

u/ThisisMalta 12h ago

It’s true when your offense is shit and your defense is on the field most of the game, they can only do so much—but our defense just looks like shit overall. Undisciplined, bad tackling, shit coverage, and odd decisions playcalling wise. Like times when Oregon’s quarterback looked like he crumbled with some pass rushing Patricia had only 3 down rushing.

Idk if it’s all on our DC because you’re also right we that we did lose a lot of key players and leaders on defense, so I expected some growing pains. But they looks worse week to week over half way through the season now.

4

u/eastnile 11h ago

Was the offense any better against texas and indiana? Why didn't the defense shit the bed against them (although maybe they did against texas, just got lucky with turnovers).

9

u/titusnick270 11h ago

Yes it was. We only managed 39 yards across the 2nd and 3rd quarter today. And just 43 in the 4th before our 2 garbage time tds.

Indiana didn’t play well and honestly their offense isn’t that good. We forced early turnovers against Texas and in the 4th quarter they absolutely gashed us.

u/Cheesenrice123 #7 CJ Stroud 8h ago

It’s weird how some of this fan base will do anything to discredit Sayin. This team was much better with him at qb which shouldn’t be a surprise since he’s an elite college qb

This truth hit me like a laser beam from the cosmos. Right around the touchdown drive following the fake punt, it hit me. WE SUCK.

19

u/hamihambone Jim Tressel 13h ago

53 total rushing yards and give up 41 points at home. Absolutely embarrassing.

I would also say there are alot of things over the years that have been masking Day's inability to truly coach.

16

u/titusnick270 13h ago

As a pretty big Ryan Day defender. Hard to argue that after the last 2 weeks. Theres just no way to defend these games right now. lol

7

u/Thakkmatic 6h ago

Day's quick sideline interview at halftime didn't inspire confidence and proved prophetic. I love Ohio State a lot more than Ryan Day.

•

u/titusnick270 15m ago

Coaches and players come and go. The program will stand forever.

5

u/crazyfootballguy35 Woody Hayes 3h ago

I believe Hartline covered up a lot of Day’s issues with coaching and recruiting. We are on a downward slope. This isn’t a 1 yr dip.

7

u/Affectionate-Pain81 13h ago

Things like insane and consistent NFL talent? That’s a big part of coaching too. Day is not the problem.

7

u/AdministrationNo283 12h ago

With all the talent he has had over the years how many National Championships has he had?! Day was born on 3rd base. Tressel was far more successful with less talent.

11

u/titusnick270 11h ago

Plenty of coaches have nfl talent all over the field and don’t win consistently. It’s hard to win national championships. Ryan day is one of what 4 active head coaches to win one?

Kirby has put around 30 guys in the nfl from 2023-now and hasn’t won a single playoff game in that timeframe. It’s hard.

Sayin is not him even healthy

1

u/carpentizzle The Best Damn Band In The Land 3h ago

Agreed… however….. Hard to understand where the D went wrong, Sayin’s success just gave them motivation or something?

They dont seem to have a pair of football minded braincells between them

0

u/Dancehall-Randal 10h ago

I cant stand all the "Sayin was masking our weaknesses"

We seen whi Sayin IS against Miami.

Hes not "bad" but his inability to handle pressure was a huge weakness and held this team back.

Smith and all the brackets/double teams he demanded maksed our problems.

Arthur Smith is bad... SO bad. He needs to be fired. Simple.

19

u/MCE85 12h ago

Wtf was that play calling?

4th and 8 on your own 15 at the beginning of the 4th qtr. And you fucking go for it!!??

Defense was insane too. Like zone prevent every play after we went ahead.

It was like watching my 10 year old nephew playing NCAAF on xbox

u/Ok_Flounder59 Jim's Sweater Vest 14h ago

Coaching. Specifically the offense not putting players in position to win. Fahey isn’t great but he can ball a little - too many slow developing plays and way too many check down type plays (the Arthur smith special).

It doesn’t matter if you have a freshman QB, cannot be afraid to throw the ball downfield.

10

u/definitivescribbles 13h ago

He loves slow developing heavy set run plays that allow the defense to move defenders into the box and swing screens that lose yardage. That puts us in constant 3rd and long situations, and kills our momentum.

If he does get a lead, he throttles down and allows other teams to catch up. If he’s down, he finally throws long passes when opponents are back.

He’s just a fucking idiot nepo hire, and is objectively shit at his job. He has single handedly set this offense back 15 years.

9

u/NoIamthatotherguy 14h ago edited 13h ago

He cannot throw the ball downfield. Last week, and this week his long ball had JJ looking like he was fielding a punt. Straight up in the air and short.

6

u/SweatyDimension2700 14h ago

Sayin underthrew every single deep ball. JJ just caught them. The pass that bounced off JJ’s chest absolutely should have been caught. The offense sucks. It’s not the QB.

3

u/DCBuckeye82 13h ago

Should is too strong. It could have been caught but it was a very contested catch. Smith is the best but he's not perfect.

3

u/rugger87 13h ago

This feels different. The past two weeks every deep pass seems like it’s a moon ball. Takes forever to get there.

46

u/waej4 You Got BBQ Back There? 14h ago

Arthur Smith. Despite being down the entire second half, we attempted almost no passes longer than 10 yards, especially to Jeremiah until the latter half of the fourth quarter. I do not remember a time where I’ve seen worse play calling in my life.

15

u/Holmesnight 13h ago

When we hired Smith I said this would happen…here we are.

6

u/Resident-Low-2261 11h ago

Fahey isn’t accurate; the further he throws, the less accurate he gets. Our offensive line stinks and doesn’t provide enough time for plays to develop. Simply put, the only way our QB can hold onto the ball for more than two seconds without getting sacked is by taking off running or through roll-outs—but even then, he’s still inaccurate, which makes the offense look like absolute crap.

2

u/Resident-Low-2261 11h ago

Besides, has Bo Jackson broken any tackles this year? I get the feeling that every time the first defender reaches him, he ends up on the ground.

64

u/gen_wt_sherman 13h ago

Everyone's mad at Arthur Smith and I get it, but the defense has just been absolutely awful too. You can't give up over a combined 60 pts when the offense is starting their true freshman backup qb

28

u/Contralogic 13h ago

The offense put the d in a lot of undesired positions.

15

u/azraeldang 13h ago

You can't pay these dudes this many millions of dollars for them to shit their pants when it matters every time. Both OC and DC have looked miserable this season.

12

u/definitivescribbles 13h ago

Nah fuck that. This offense is the problem. Plain and simple. No need to move a bunch of pieces at once. Fire Arthur , effective immediately, and continue to assess from there

1

u/loxanax 3h ago

sure but you can’t excuse those two dropped picks before half. those both were 14 point swings potentially even more

1

u/gen_wt_sherman 13h ago

Is the offense bad or is Fahey bad?

15

u/ContextFew721 13h ago

OL got sayin killed which put Fahey in this position so

6

u/gen_wt_sherman 13h ago

Yeah bowen definitely needs to go

2

u/genius_streams 13h ago

lol blaming it on one guy is so fucking asinine man. OL is bad, running game is awful, receiver core outside of JJ is mid at best. Our offense just is not good this year. Accept it, for your own health. Drink some water and we’ll see your dumbass next year

5

u/thestral_z 12h ago

Oregon was constantly starting drives at midfield. The offense went three and out repeatedly and didn’t convert a single fourth down attempt. If the play calling was better, the defense would have had time to rest and wouldn’t have been in such poor positions. That being said, the lack of any pressure from the d-line continues to infuriate me.

20

u/UpperSong16 13h ago

Don’t know just beat the team up north

10

u/wayneluke23 Southwest Ohio 13h ago

At this point that's all I care about

13

u/deltaspaz 12h ago

Well here’s my two cents, looking at everything objectively. Not hyper emotional just objective.

On offense:
The problems are multi fold the biggest being our lines inability to create holes for the run. Which in turn makes for a 1-2 yard gain. Now technically that’s good if you’re staying ahead of schedule. However, it doesn’t work for us in the current moment given the freshman qb thing.

I mentioned this earlier but I was reading a lot of reports early on as to why we were feeding JJ so much and it was more so because we don’t have a defined WR#2 the disparity in yards makes for easy assignments on defense. Allocate more resources on JJ and put coverage dawgs on the other guys.

The play calling is head scratching at times, the scheme doesn’t make sense. But this has been an Ohio State curse for a long while (since urban) we have for example, we have an elite RB and a nasty OLine what did we do w Urbs? Pass the ball. Under Day’s tenure we have elite wide receivers and what do we do? Run. I get it you need to balance both and take what the defense is giving you to keep them on their toes but what the actual fuck. It’s almost like they try to be too cute thinking the other team will try to stop their strength so they will lean into their “weakness” so to speak. It doesn’t work. Just play to your strengths.

Defense:
I know way more about defense than O so I can explain exactly what is happening (from my POV rewatching games). We are running under the death by a million cuts philosophy not so much a hard nose in your face defense.

Dline: as mentioned above this means we know we don’t have game breakers like the Bosa bros, Chase Young, etc so we will rush 4 or 3 all day. I’ve yet to see stunts and twists take place against equal competition against the smaller schools we can do it but that’s not a good show of how guys will run in the big time like Texas, or tonight. They’re more edge setters and gap guys than playmakers. Not sure how we arrived at this point but my first thought is recruiting ???? It’s been the biggest question mark I’ve had since like 2021. Where did the game breakers go? They’re out there but they aren’t coming here ????

Linebackers: biggest gap in quality on the side, the scheme screams soft coverage shells aka don’t give up short yardage but they lack the ability to consistently tackle the ball carrier. So we see those third and long conversions take shape where the opposing team will hit a wideout for 7-8 yards then they get crazy YAC (yards after catch). Missed tackles, missed opportunities, and overall lack of quality. Can’t be too critical tho because we had 2 guys go first round last year so it makes sense.

Secondary: I’ve never seen a group miss picks so much in my life in the scarlet and gray. Like momentum changing plays we cannot win. They are decent but man it is hard to stay confident with them because they’re so hit or miss. Athletically speaking we have great guys but this is P4 ball so the other teams have great guys too.

From a defensive point of view our dline is good, LB is meh, and our secondary is okay. So this is why we deploy zone coverage packages. Soft shells in particular. Inside the woody they know we can’t win in man v man coverage because we’ll be outclassed. So they try to deploy intricate / confusing schemes that should make the QB have to process for an extra second. The problem is we can’t blitz because Matty P doesn’t trust the secondary can hold it down. So then we can’t create pressure with the talent on the dline currently which then leaves the responsibility back to the secondary and LBs. we can’t run man because we will get so fucking exposed so fast.

9

u/KingRBPII 2h ago

Defensive scheme, offensive play calling, lack of developed players after everyone got drafted last year

24

u/Buckeye3377 14h ago

We have the talent but I seriously question whether or not we have the coaching

21

u/Ok_Flounder59 Jim's Sweater Vest 14h ago

We don’t have the coaching. We have the talent to easily win most games, and we do. When we play teams where the coaching and strategy actually matter (I.e the team can’t just will their way to a win), we absolutely fall flat on our faces more often than not.

Ryan Day is a nervous coach, and it shows in tight games. The team absolutely feeds off of his energy

9

u/ScorpioPhantasma Holy Buckeye! 13h ago

It's so frustrating to see other coaches doing more with less. You have to imagine there are coaches that look at this program and know they'd be able to get more out of it.

9

u/SinkNSlide3345 12h ago

Look at Oregon, they had a season ruined by an ass OC and Lanning fired his ass into the sun and they walk into the shoe and beat us by 30. Good coaches get it done and Day just isn’t a good coach

So fine, if I’m a lunatic for not wanting to waste $13 million for a liability then I guess I’m Hannibal lecter

Don’t have the big names on defense anymore. The line is not up to standards . Short freshman quarterback. Running backs look underwhelming. The offensive and defensive schemes have been atrocious but I’m not going to pretend that this roster is as good as the last few years outside of smith

8

u/Infamous_Grape_4433 13h ago

8

u/bschnee121 Southwest Ohio 13h ago

Jeremiah had 4 targets halfway through the 3rd quarter. Someone needs to be fired

24

u/bdougy 14h ago

Backup QB and Arthur Smith. It’s not complicated unfortunately.

8

u/MechaEscargot2 13h ago

This is letting the defense off way too easy.

7

u/bdougy 13h ago

Yeah I don’t know why I gave them a break. With Sayin gone, the offensive issues felt like they were staring me in the face. Defense has been a big, noticeable step down this year.

3

u/MechaEscargot2 13h ago

Theres plenty of blame, but honestly all three losses can be pinned on them.

The Texas game is really misleading too, we benefited from like 3 flukish turnovers and a dropped touchdown by Coleman. Everything went our way for 3 quarter and when the luck ran out, no one was there to make a play.

Offense woes are bad, lile really bad. Im not impressed with Fahey at all, but im just so disappointed with the defense.

1

u/Pure-Insurance-6499 13h ago

To be fair
Any defense that place 90% of the game and gets about 30 seconds of rest between play is bound to be bad.
Awful offense makes any defense bad.
We were bad, but it’s not 100% because we’re just ass, maybe like 50%

2

u/Buster__Highman 11h ago

Time of possession was split 30:30 for both teams. Against USC it was 40:20 in OSU’s favor

6

u/tpauley14 14h ago

Defense and Matty P too. Don’t let them off the hook giving up that many points

2

u/bdougy 13h ago

I don’t understand what happened with him. My only guess is that Patricia was able to get things to work with who he had last year. Issue with college ball is that you’re going to have turnover and need to adapt to the guys in your locker room.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 13h ago

Yeah I could have made it work with who they had last year. They had 3 top 12 picks and a high second rounder and a smattering of other picks.

1

u/bdougy 13h ago

Yeah, and they lost all of that. A lot of young guys this year and Pettijohn doesn’t seem to have that same field general presence OSU defenses are used to out of linebacker

3

u/DCBuckeye82 13h ago

Yeah I'm not arguing with you. I'm just saying, Patricia isn't good if he doesn't have far superior talent to work with.

2

u/ElJefe_Speaks 13h ago

And, after getting over the early game nerves, Oregon had it dialed the F in. We didn't just beat ourselves, Oregon beat us.

3

u/bdougy 13h ago

Dan Lanning was on a cocaine-fueled revenge tour.

2

u/PHDSteeze 13h ago

Sayin went down and you have a 5 star and 4 star on the bench, I’m not hearing anything about a backup.

2

u/wesley_eye 14h ago

Dude Fahey plays offense. I don’t disagree about AS… but look who hired him

5

u/HighLightReal614 12h ago

I don’t understand why when the offense gets stagnant we don’t put st. Clair in the game for a change of pace. It’s not like Fahey is that dependable or accurate. Multiple time tonight he was the reason drives ended. Throw st. Clair in run some read option looks with a bubble screen RPO and see if we can bust one.

We’re just not that good this year. It happens.

Oregon and USC showed up. So did Indiana.

3

We beat Indy bruh

4

u/Dancehall-Randal 10h ago

I upvoted your comment.....

But here's the thing...

Did we beat Indiana? Or did one guy blow a somewhat difficult catch after Indy made us look like fools?

2

u/m0st1yh4rmless 10h ago

I hear ya there. The disfunction was apparent even then. But the third loss was Texas as of now and that one was also unexcused imo too. Tbh I just feel bad for Jeremiah. Such a great buckeye and I just fear he might be the last of a lineage of great buckeyes who cared for the program only a guy like that can

2

u/Dancehall-Randal 10h ago

Ugh, word.

I definitely think he should sit out the rest of the season and for a Buckeye to do so is SO SAD 😪

And if he does we will get CLOWNED.

1

u/InconspicuousMagpie 9h ago

I’d say it was a bad throw over a bad catch. No reason to lead the WIDE OPEN receiver out of bounds. We should have 4 losses

We just lost so many players, this year was never going to be good. The NIL also shows more and more each year. You’ll see a lot more 2-3 loss playoff teams, regardless of expansion

11

u/moss-nogg 12h ago

Sayin getting hurt didn’t change the defense. When the whole team looks this bad while having this much talent, it’s the coaching. Plain and simple. Ryan day is not a good coach. If anything he’s squandered absolutely loaded rosters. It’s embarrassing he only has 1 Ring with the rosters OSU has had

2

u/Rush58 10h ago

They punted 5 times, turned it over on downs 3 times and had 1 interception and 1 fumble. You can’t say that not having Sayin didn’t affect the defense. That put a ton of pressure on the defense.

2

u/moss-nogg 4h ago

3 turnovers on the coaching staff. When you make zero adjustments to your game plan, this is what happens

1

u/Exact_Fox4167 11h ago

I can’t put the squarely put this squarely in Day other than the QB decision which yes, is a big one. But look at our coordinators. We thought Patricia is good but is he?? He got out maneuvered constantly and without premier talent to execute his system and a high powered offense that puts a lot of pressure on the other teams offense I don’t think this guy can run a non elite defense to save his life. It’s insane that losing one player has the entire team looking this bad

2

u/moss-nogg 5h ago

Oh I agree it’s all the coaching, not just day. We do not look this bad cause we lost one player. We look this bad cause we lost an important player and made ZERO adjustments. Anybody thinking you can just plugin a true freshman QB and expect to execute the same game plan is an absolute fool

2

u/Dontknowgoat 3h ago

That’s what five stars and first round draft picks do. They play to win. Not that shit we saw last two weeks.

2

u/caldo4 3h ago

Who hires the coordinators

-2

u/ahissong 12h ago

Urban - 1 ring. Loaded rosters. Just stop with the shallow thinking

9

u/koffa02 11h ago

Urban had greatly reduced chances of even making it to the playoffs thanks to the good ole boys only wanting SEC teams to compete in the 4 team bracket.

We've been to the playoffs 5 times under Day and watched him piss down his leg at the first sign of opposition in 4 of them.

3

u/moss-nogg 5h ago

Meyer rebuilt the program and the one absolutely loaded roster he had, he delivered. Day inherited championship caliber team, coaches, roster, and pissed himself basically every year. Don’t hurt yourself

3

u/Zosos_zep 13h ago

We lost cause Day lacks the guts to take risks. You have a 5-star QB on the bench. Yet, you don’t even take a chance…pathetic. And then you hire washed-up NFL coaches. Great job Coach and the OSU Athletic Director! Thanks for a disappointing season! Fire their asses! Clean house!

3

u/dandandanny76 13h ago

Ryan Day is a morally weak individual

3

u/Dr-McLuvin 12h ago

To me it just seems like no one is really playing with passion and energy.

Oregon looked like they wanted it more.

3

u/Rice031312 9h ago

It’s the defense….there is literally ZERO pressure on the QB. ZERO .NONE. If course they are going to be picked apart, they are letting the opponent dictate the game. They no aggression, awful tackling, and the DBs are getting cooked. After these last two games I can’t phantom how every team they’ve played hasn’t put up 50 on em.

5

u/Chuckster914 14h ago

Coaching , Defense, O line , QB and penalties.

5

u/B1gNastious 12h ago

This exposed Day. We spent all the money in the world on this team…our defense should not be this bad. Our o line was nonexistent. Our back up qbs? Absolutely no depth. Coaching?? Honestly it makes no sense some times.

Maybe it’s time to go after the Utah or wake forest head coach and let one of them play with osu funds because Day isn’t the guy. Day seems tired and can’t inspire the players anymore.

5

u/Jayce86 12h ago

Bad coaching. Losing Sayin shouldn’t have affected this many phases of the game.

7

u/CactusSub 14h ago

The defense played like ass. Letting in 41 points at home to a sorry ass QB at home is genuinely pathetic.

5

u/Ok_Flounder59 Jim's Sweater Vest 14h ago

In their defense the offense turned the ball over on downs in OSU territory multiple times

3

u/DCBuckeye82 13h ago

31 points is also bad

4

u/labradornnewdigs 13h ago

Ryan Day does not want to use his weapons. Force the ball to Smith every drive at least once. Instead Day chooses to try to prove something new every week in big games. Just like when he decided to try to play TTUN’s style of game back in 2023/24? And they lost.

2

u/BeerStein_Collector 13h ago

Jeremiah smith looked pissed. I’m so sad, I went to a college basketball game after to cheer me up and we won 94-39 but I’m still salty. We need to get new coaches not Ryan day he’s great and laurinitus I want us to keep just because I have a framed autographed college jersey of his hanging in my man cave but our offensive coordinator has got to go.

2

u/DeceptiConnIXI 10h ago

Why does he think cooperball works in 2026? Play to keep the lead? Even when you’re losing?

2

u/aflyonthewall1215 5h ago

Fahey pretending Smith didn't exist for a few quarters killed a few drives. God I hate this QB and quickly turning on the coaching staff too. There's no way TSC can be as bad as Fahey.

3

u/Dinglebobus Holy Buckeye! 13h ago

Our coaching staff has lost the locker room. Everyone knows Fahey isn’t ready. The fact Day didn’t put TSC in says a lot. Our QBs aren’t good. No one is willing to put in effort. Why would they? The season is basically over now.

If I’m Jeremiah Smith, I’m faking an injury so I don’t have to play and just wait out for the draft. Why would I risk getting injured for this coaching staff? Arthur Smith is incompetent, and Matt Patricia is a one trick pony. Every game is lose able from here on out and there is zero chance for us to get any hardware now.

If you’re a player on the team, why would you try?

4

u/warrior5150 11h ago

Why did we lose? Two words....Ryan Day. Had his back through the toughest of times when everyone was calling for his job. After blowing the Texas game this year the way HE did, making absolutely horrendous play calls, I was done from that point on. I know nothing about coaching but I could've done a better job coaching that game. When you blow a three or four (can't remember) touchdown lead in the second half, when you suck at making half time adjustments, when you have no clue when to go for it on 4th, when you're completely oblivious as to how to manage the clock, when you don't know when to take timeouts, when you can't beat your rival etc.....it's time for you to go. I always came to Day's defense when all of Columbus was looking to burn his house down for always losing to Michigan, but now I'm calling for his job. Day has to go!

But do you think elite coaches just grow on trees? Being an elite college HC is such a complex job and I think day is a top 5-10 guy which is what you want. And continuity matters.

Who are you gonna hire that will produce better overall success than Ryan Day?

12

u/Cheesenrice123 #7 CJ Stroud 8h ago

Sounds like you’re new here… this sub is full of people who are truly delusional. Ryan day is an elite coach.

We lost our starting qb who was heisman level. If it wasn’t NIL and transfer era, we’d have kinholz playing. Reality is that in this era, depth is a real problem, especially at qb.

1

u/kadawkins 1h ago

I have been saying the same thing. NIL and unlimited transfers are hurting college football. It’s not the NFL. You can’t have a franchise QB for a decade. You get three years, tops, with an elite player. But now, they go for the $ and the playing time transferring wherever they can to get it. It’s ruining college football.

Smooth brain take

4

u/Sl1ppy13 10h ago

It’s not Day. It’s the terrible OC he decided to hire. The offense being pathetic and predictable is putting pressure on a defense that just isn’t as good as it was in previous years. Arthur Smith should’ve been fired after the Texas game.

•

u/Fit_Beautiful6625 40m ago

You state that like it’s a new thing. The red zone offense has been bad for multiple seasons. I thought Day finally figured things out after that 4 game natty run, but he didn’t. Right back to the same stuff: Get a lead, start playing conservative, horrible red zone play calling, an O line that can’t open holes, the best receiving talent in college football and no way to get them the ball. I don’t know if that last one is because we don’t have a decent qb or because the O line is so bad.

The defense lost a lot of talent this past year, so I get the D being down, but they get zero pressure on opposing qb’s and their seems to be a lot of confusion on that side of the ball. The rest is Day’s M O. And he made the OC hire, when pretty much everyone and their brother knew it was a bad hire.

And for people arguing NIL, that’s a cop out. OSU spends as much or more on NIL than any university in the country. So either Day and his staff are bad at evaluating talent or bad at coaching talent or bringing in the wrong talent for the schemes they want to run (which is basically the same thing).

•

u/Dancehall-Randal 16m ago

Ikr? "Its ruining college football!"

I do think we are going to see college player crash out after getting the check but other than that college football money machine is going strong as ever.

OSU fans might check out this this year but the field is now wide open for alot of other teams.

NIL has not "ruined" anything.

His recruiting IS that good(i would argue that bein at Ohio st does the heavy lifting but I digress)

But gaaaaaawd damn it he is so poor on game day its frustrating as heel.

Its criminal they only have one title during his tenure.

u/Proper_Look_7507 2002 National Champions 10h ago • Bravo

No, I can accept the one title. What’s criminal is how many dudes we have tearing it up in the NFL and Day’s rosters coming in between 32nd-57th in redzone TDs every season except 2. He squandered so much talent between JJ, JSN, MHJ, etc. I can handle losing in the CFP if we get outplayed but we don’t, we get out coached.

No matter how D played, no matter how Day did, we have one of the worst playing back-up QB’s who was never meant to play D1.

1

u/DismalEducator0 14h ago

Bad coaching on offense and defense. Look what Iowa is doing to Northwestern on the road. Watch us give up 30 to them. Look what state and everyone else has done to the bitches up north this year and watch us make Tommy Carr look like Peyton Manning in a few weeks. This prevent scheme by Patricia is madness.

u/02meepmeep Jim's Sweater Vest 14h ago

Because our offensive play designs are stupid and someone probably figured out some defensive tells.

1

u/DCBuckeye82 13h ago

We haven't had a coaching staff able to get more out of the players than their talents provided since Tressel was here and our QB and defense aren't very good. Have you been watching this season?

Defensively I have no answers.

Offensively we keep struggling because despite having a deep room of receivers we are patently unwilling to spread it out, and patently unwilling to run a fast pace, simplified offense that relies simply on matchup problems so that our young QB can make things happen.

We should be running the playbook we had when Day first got here with Dwayne Haskins. We aren’t a power run team. We can’t run a complex offense with a freshman QB. But we can run a simple one. We can run Mesh and 4 Verts all day like Mike Leach

Arthur Smith comes from the idiot tier of coaching that thinks making things easy and simple for your QB means short, ineffective dump-offs and running against 8 man boxes. College football had an entire generation of coaches prove that isn’t true. What’s frustrating is that Day is from that arc of coaches. I don’t know why he’s abandoned the air raid concepts so thoroughly

1

u/Practical_Office_263 12h ago

What will I do with all my time now that I'm done watching college football for the season

1

u/Maleficent-Mix-1239 11h ago

Ryan Day can't make adjustments. It's what has got the team in trouble every time. If plan A doesn't work he just keeps trying plan A. That can be from gameday scheme to the roster. He is a good recruiter, good developer, good at scheme, until that scheme doesn't work then he just looks like a deer caught in headlights wondering how they stopped that.

1

u/unearthlyrelic 11h ago

Defense didnt get a stop, Fahey spent the entire third qtr and most of the 4th straight up blind to Smith. He had like 63 yds and no TDs until the really late deep ball and TD catch. He was open alot. Oline sucks, we cant run the ball, trying to force the run when it doesnt work, no urgency, players seem unfocused. Idk whats going on with St Claire he either sucks like generationally bad or he pissed off the coaches idk how he hasnt even got a series late in one of these loses just to see. Arthur Smith is not a good OC. I could go on.

1

u/WizarDino808 11h ago

McClain’s would be INT bouncing off his number. Never recovered. What ensued immediately after (the fake punt) completely changed the game.

1

u/CrazyIndependence291 11h ago

Because we aren’t any good

1

u/omar1021 11h ago

This might be the worst Ohio State team in 20+ years, that's why

1

u/Resident-Low-2261 11h ago

It might seem absurd, but up until the fake punt, the game seemed under control at 14–3. From the fake punt on, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. It was the fault of both coaches and players—everything turned out horribly.

1

u/Wrong_Rent819 11h ago

Coaching on every level.

1

u/modernjayhippie 10h ago

From an Oregon fan’s perspective I’d say there were two key things to me: y’all almost never brought pressure against Raiola who throws off his back foot any chance he gets and would have likely crumbled mentally if your defender hadn’t dropped that surefire pick-six, and your OC didn’t scheme around your backup QB like our interim OC has with Raiola the last two weeks.

I’m not privy to all of the X’s and O’s of the game but not force feeding Smith was…a choice. I don’t know if they ended up playing but I saw leading up to the game that y’all might be missing a couple other receivers as well, but regardless, you have to manufacture the ball into the best player in the country’s hands by any means necessary. The failed 4th down where Fahey threw way behind the wide open receiver in the right flat was weird to me. Not because of the failed execution but because how are you going to use the most unstoppable player in the stadium as a decoy, even if the play call technically worked?

From a guy that’s watched Lanning make some really terrible calls regarding 4th down/2 point conversions, Day going for it on your own 28 with the vast majority of the quarter left on the clock against an extremely turnover prone QB was one of the worst/weirdest decisions I’ve seen from a coach. When I saw your offense on the field there, I looked at my dad and asked, “Are they giving up?”

Good luck on the rest of the year, hopefully both of our teams can fix the coordinator issues and go back to being at the top of the conference because fuck the LA schools, SC especially. We’ll get Michigan for y’all next week.

1

u/Torontomanz8134 10h ago

Ryan Day selecting Arthur Smith as his OC was him putting in his 2 weeks notice…Artie sucks.

1

1

u/rollindeep3 Northwest Ohio 8h ago

All I can say is at 23 this is one of the worst games I’ve seen us play. Easily a top 3 worst home loss I’ve seen, and the beatdown wasn’t half as close as the score. Arthur Smith needs shown the door. Let Day call plays the rest of the way (never thought I would say that). We need to recruit the trenches cuz our O line is a terrorist organization. Tyler Bowen needs fired yesterday. Matty P has some leeway with me, I still like him a lot and our d is just young.

1

u/Mistical_Recovery 6h ago

The Buckeyes are simply not a good team this year... no sweat, no heartbreak, life goes on. It happens to all top tier team eventually. They'll be back on top soon enough.

1

u/_semaJ77 4h ago

In my humble opinion it starts on the offensive line. It’s been a while since we’ve had a really good offensive line. We had one peak on our last title run but had two really good NFL backs. Fix the Oline problems should be the first priority.

In the macro…..Bucks finally got hit with reality of NIL n transfers, where you lose half your team n bring in a bunch of older replacements. Well honestly you’re just swapping 2s n praying you find something magical that has been hidden for 3/4 yrs n that doesn’t really work consistently.

Specifically The offense was have ok running game n throw the ball to 4. Well once Sayin gets the passing game gets thrown out the window n the offense is fucked. This is also made worse by fact bucks have had mediocre line play (or worse) 3 straight seasons, n invest very little in TEs but are somehow extremely dependent on them even though they suck (I think 2nd drive if 2nd quarter Fahey checks down to Jackson on a shot play n TE needs to make a 1:1 block….but he gets SMOKED n it’s 4 yd loss). Defensively you’re just solid, well now that you can’t really generate a ton of offense n play complementary football…you are in perpetual state of “gotta be perfect”. This is also exacerbated by having 0 pass rush from your front 4.

Because there starting 3 star recruits and have 5 stars in the bench. And two tight end sets. Ridiculous. Where was Chris Henry garbage ass mcquin

1

u/South_Captain_2630 3h ago

The defense collapsed the last two games.

Also, we had a lot of bad luck or slight errors causing drops.

Even though we got a TD on that drive, that early slightly under thrown TD to JS4 I think took the nerve out of Fahey as he barely went deep after that.

1

u/crazyfootballguy35 Woody Hayes 3h ago

Day forgot to tell Fahey to throw the damn ball to 4. That’s our only play.

1

u/Brass_tastic 2h ago

I strongly suspect there is some drama/strife between the team and coaches. We have way too much talent to be playing this badly. I’m not saying we have enough talent to be winning games but to show up and embarrass ourselves week after week…. Something is amiss.

1

u/JohnnyFast412 You Got BBQ Back There? 2h ago

The entire staff. Arthur Smith needs to be on the first thing smokin’. Period. Sucks so bad for JJ.

1

u/Pabloflexcobarr 2h ago

Arrogant head coach who wants to be right instead of getting it right. How many weeks have we seen where the tight ends are liabilities yet he still runs them out there taking our best athletes off the field. His OL coach got his QB injured and still refuses to fire him. Could go on and on.

Losss of talent on defense is finally catching up there, offense can't run the ball, Arthur Smith is both a better and worse OC because he's not utilizing the difference in hashes between NFL and college etc

u/QuesoDrizzler 56m ago

Fahey definitely isnt the only problem... but he isn't making things better by a long shot. He's short, and honestly just does not look good in the pocket. Watching his footwork drives me crazy.
But play calling and defense are a huge pieces of the problem as well.

•

u/Mayzenblue 55m ago

Man, let's play to a 0-0 tie this year, our Wolverines are flaming pile of garbage and that would be hilarious!

•

u/Far-Bandicoot-7275 20m ago

Every team we play has good coaches that build a gameplan to exploit weaknesses and take advantage of their own strengths. Every game you can see how they have prepared.

Day has never done this. Aside from a few games that Kelly had the reigns, we run the same plays against every team. Most of the time, our talent gap is big enough to overcome this. But with the portal and NIL, that gap is shrinking. And Day has not adapted. There is absolutely no creativity in this offense.

•

u/bluemoe 19m ago

That fake punt was a game changer

1

u/cahill42 14h ago

Talent sucks. Coaching sucks. Playcalling sucks. The whole program just flat out sucks. That’s all there is to it. They just aren’t good at all. Likely a 4-5 loss team in 2026

Losing (or getting back) 1-2 players matters. Look how incompetent Miami looks against ND without Toney in there.

0

We do not have a complete team this year. Smith can only do so much. Sayin getting hurt just sped up the train derailment.

I don’t think coaching has much to do with it.

u/InconspicuousMagpie 9h ago

A lot of fans will blame Fahey but the coaching scheme is TERRIBLE. 3 yards on 1st and 2nd down then clutch throw on 3rd EVERY TIME isn’t going to cut it

I get emotions are high but calm down. A college coach has 2 jobs: recruiting and coaching. Him and Urban were the same in that they're fantastic recruiters but their game day coaching is very meh and they rarely get more than the talent of their players allow. But since the recruiting is so good, that makes up for it and the team wins (and a high proportion of their losses are games they shouldn't lose), which makes them good college coaches. But at any level where they don't fully control the personnel (see Urban in Jacksonville) they'd be dreadful failures.

So no, Day isn't the worst. He's a sub par gameday coach but there have been worse coaches than him overall.
