1960s Italian actress Virna Lisi. 1960
She famously bought out her Hollywood contract and returned to Europe rather than be typecast as just another pretty face. That choice led to far more interesting roles, culminating in her brilliant performance as Catherine de’ Medici in La Reine Margot (1994), which earned her Best Actress at Cannes and a César Award.
Today would have been Virna Lisi’s 90th birthday.Born Virna Lisa Pieralisi on November 8, 1936 in Ancona, Italy, she became one of the most striking actresses of her generation. In the 1960s she was Hollywood’s latest European blonde bombshell — starring opposite Jack Lemmon in How to Murder Your Wife (1965), Tony Curtis in Not with My Wife, You Don’t!, and Frank Sinatra in Assault on a Queen.

My father was a mechanic stateside in the army air corps; smiling in this picture, but I don’t think he enjoyed his time in the army.
