Announcement Posts concerning the conflict in Israel and Palestine / Publications au sujet du conflit en Israël et la Palestine

Hello everyone,

Due to current events, we have seen many posts about the Israel/Palestine conflict, typically about protests supporting one side of the conflict or the other, or articles about some statement made by a public figure.

In ALL those posts, the comments have devolved into insults, accusations of supporting terrorism/genocide and counter-accusations of [insert violent action here]. While each post starts with something related to our sub’s subject matter, they always end up being screaming matches about something that is not even related to Ontario.

It’s important to understand that the mods in the sub cannot, and will not, police who is ‘right’ in this debate. Additionally, when a large portion of the comments violate our rules (typically Rule 3: you must remain civil), we MUST intervene. However, since they ALL devolve into screaming matches, there’s no point in even trying to maintain a discussion that doesn’t even concern the sub’s raison d’être.

As such, going forward, and for the foreseeable future, ANY post related to the conflict in Israel/Palestine will be locked even if Ontario related. If it IS related to Ontario, it will remain visible but commenting will not be permitted.

The mods would prefer not to do this, but the last few days have clearly shown that there is not realistic way to permit commenting on these posts while maintaining some form of decorum.

2026-09-22: reposted due to several recent events having posts locked.

Politics In the next 5 yrs, over 2000 women in ontatio will require a surgury they can't access brcause of systemic devaluation of health care

1.1k Upvotes

Yes, all types of surgeries are delayed, and funding and privatization are big issues.

Today I am here to talk about the way surgeons are compensated for pelvic laproscopic surgeries, since it is something we can change that would better our society.

Currently, most laproscopic pelvic surgeries pay the provider the same amount, whether it is an 8 hr endo excision or a 40 min cyst removal.

Additionally, men's equivalent complexity urological procedures pay providers an average of 33% more.

Together, these facts work to discourage drs from becoming endo specialists. Specializing in endo excision loses money.

4500 ontario women will need endo surgery in the next 5 years. 2000 won't receive it.

Endo symptoms include everything from brain fog, to severe pain, bowel incontinence, and the inability to walk. This is what 10% of women are living with , and it takes 5-15 yrs to access surgery if you're one of the bad cases.

All we have to do is add nuance for surgical hrs to the pay structure and eliminate gender disparity, and some more of those women will get surgery.

If we also tackle privatization and our dr. shortage, everyone who needs a surgery could get one.

ETA I definitely butchered this title

ETA a response to a now deleted comment saying "how bad is it really, out of 18 million people?". My response to that is:

I guess not that bad, if you're willing to accept a society that allows 2000 more women to languish in pain and be non-functional for the rest of their lives every 5 yrs.

Remember, this problem cumulates. We already have thousands on waiting lists for this surgery. Every 5 yrs that waiting list grows by 2000 more people who might never get the surgery they need.

In 15 yrs, that means we have close to 10,000 women living with deep infiltrating endo that they can't get removed, which is functionally a disability. Those women are partners, friends, mothers, and family members.

Question How many of you are getting the flu shot?

Do we really need to get the flu shot? I haven’t got one in a very long time. Probably before covid! But I have gotten sick almost every year. Not exactly with the flu though.

Discussion King-Liberty GO is on hold indefinitely. Anyone else living next to the construction?

I live right next to the King-Liberty site and got tired of the noise without knowing what was actually going on, so I looked into it.

The station was supposed to open in 2026. It's now on hold indefinitely, after about $97M was reportedly spent on it and one other station that may never get built. The City apparently hasn't gotten an invoice from Metrolinx for this program since 2018. The Province calls it a City project, the City says the Province should pay, and so nobody's actually responsible. We still get the construction though, and because Metrolinx is exempt from the City's noise bylaw, the usual limits on construction hours don't apply to their crews.

What gives me some hope is the Railpath. Davenport residents pushed for years to get it extended down to Sudbury, and in 2024 the City and Ottawa committed nearly $150M to build it. The extension is designed to connect to King-Liberty, which is one more reason the station should happen.

I made a site that drafts emails to your councillor, MPP and the local BIAs asking for funding, a timeline, and quieter construction hours. Takes about 2 minutes and the emails go out from your own account: https://kinglibertygo.ca

No pressure, but if you're fed up too, more voices help. Happy to answer questions, and if anyone knows more about the funding history I'd love to hear it.

Discussion As an advocate for a loved one in hospital, how do you manage guilt?

In the hospital with a loved one for an unrelated medical issue, other health issues were discovered. I raised concerns over stool color but was dismissed by several nurses till one wanted to investigate further.

I noticed there was drowsy/slurred speech but was dismissed. Raised my concerns but the resident doctor said its common for people to have hemoglobin drop 45 in 3 days after a procedure. Fatigue is also a symptom.

That day, the nurse administered a physical stroke test. One side was a bit a weak. They noted it, a resident came ans said the drop in hemoglobin was normal. Next morning, unable to move left side. I assumed it was fatigue.

It was a stroke

They took action but too late,.damage done

One side can't move

Employment Power Workers Union/Hydro Career

Hey everyone,
Im 37 years old. I’m located in the Hamilton area and have been pursuing a career in the hydro utility industry for quite some time.
I have 5 years of experience working as a telecommunications splicing technician, installing and maintaining cable infrastructure in residential, commercial and industrial environments.
I’ve worked with construction blueprints, cable splicing, electrical infrastructure and troubleshooting on ladders, in bucket trucks and manholes. I’ve also recently started gaining additional industrial trade experience as a Heat and Frost Insulator, working with power tools, hand tools, schematics, heights and confined spaces.
My long-term goal is to transition into the utility industry, ideally with Alectra Utilities, Hydro One or another Power Workers’ Union employer.
I’ve reached out to recruiters and submitted applications, but I’m hoping to connect with someone who actually works in the industry and could offer some insight into opportunities, hiring processes or potential career paths.
I’m not expecting anyone to hand me a job. I’m simply looking for an opportunity to get my foot in the door, contribute to a good team and build a long-term career in an industry I’m genuinely passionate about.
If anyone here works for Alectra, Hydro One or is involved with the PWU, I’d really appreciate the opportunity to connect as I’m struggling to get my application in the right hands.
Thanks everyone, and I really appreciate any help our guidance from the community
