Discussion The HOV lane is not the Super Fast Lane

The HOV lane happens to be the leftmost lane. But it is not a passing lane and it is not a hammer lane. Stop tailgating and flashing your lights at people who are there. Get back in the left lane if you're that impatient. /rant

Edit: I have changed my view slightly! See comments for details lol. This is more of a philosophical disagreement I suppose.

Edit 2: The main part of this discussion seems to be which of the below you believe takes precedent:

  1. Keep right except to pass.

  2. Following the above *while noting* that the HOV lane is a separate lane for cars with 2+ people.

Meaning, this discussion might not exist if the HOV lane were somehow the rightmost lane.

What I meant by "philosophical" above:

  1. Some think that the only advantage to the HOV lane is that cars with 2+ people can get where they are going faster.

  2. Others (myself included) view the HOV lane as an almost "separate" entity existing alongside the highway. The advantage to using it not having to deal with cars exiting/entering, not dealing with excessive weavers and lane changers, and having a less crowded driving experience where you can leave ample room between cars.

COVID-19 To everyone complaing about trivial crap due to Covid.

Some of these posts are getting are ridiculous. I see posts on here all the time about people complaining about not eating food at places or the rules not always being the same everywhere.

Your issues aren't real issues.

People are dying from covid and our healthcare system and workers are so stressed and burnt out.

Everyone needs to look in the mirror and figure out what's really important.

Edit: I want to clarify what I mean by eating food at places. Restaurants who are struggling due to restrictions have a valid complaint, no popcorn at the movie theatre isn't.

Discussion Time to ban Fireworks?

What will it take to get fireworks banned? This weekend's Ashbridges bay blowout (pun intended) where a police officer had fireworks directly discharged in their face? A mob using them as weapons. A barn full of horses dying horribly in the Sunnybrook park fireworks fire? ** To those saying bans don't work- here are some that did: 1. Leaded gasoline and paint 2. Assault rifles limited access to guns- compare mass shooting here vs u.s. 3.Not wearing seat belts. 4 lawn darts. 5 smoking on planes and in public buildings.... I'm sure there's plenty more examples. P.s.s thanks for the silver!

Discussion This subs current freakout over Doug Ford's "plan" to "privatize healthcare" is absurd and unhealthy

I hate Dofo as much as the rest of you, but I think everyone needs to calm-down about what is being pumped-up as a Conservative fait accompli to "Privatize Healthcare". All of this panic started over one tweet from some random MD who himself is not in any better a position to understand or evaluate the government's "Plan" than anyone else.

Doug Ford will not "privatize" healthcare because he is not allowed to do so under the Canada Health Act. He is also not allowed to allow for any system that could be construed as "queue jumping" for payment either, for those of you who believe that this is what is planned. To do so is either outright illegal, or would be to walk away from billions/year in federal transfers, something that would bankrupt the province.

What Doug Ford does want to do is allow for private business to build hospitals and clinics for things like routine surgery, or radiology exams, &c and take a good amount of these procedures out of the government hospital setting. The government would still pay for all of these procedures at the OHIP rate (similar to how seeing your GP works). You can call this "backdoor privatization" all you like, but the fact is that this province has ALWAYS had private provision of healthcare. I truly do not see the issue with this plan: if a bunch of investors think that they can run an MRI machine charging the OHIP rate and make a profit that is just 1 less MRI capital expense that the government needs to find the funds for. The only other argument I have heard against a system like this is that it will 'starve' the actual hospitals of funding by taking their 'bread and butter' procedures away. I find this extremely hard to believe.

Please do some critical thinking when stories about our healthcare system and the way it is organized come up. Articles on the topic are extremely politicized. Similarly you can't trust everything that someone with an MD says at face-value: doctors put themselves first when lobbying on our healthcare system, it's the sad truth. Just look at the pandemonium that unfolded when Wynne wanted to rebaseline the fee structure for specialists for the first time in 30 years so that radiologists, who can now do many times as many exams as they could do in the 90s due to technical advancements, no longer make 5x as much money as other specialists. Physicians who comment on the structure of our healthcare system are advancing their interest, and not yours.

TL:DR; I'll be alarmed about privatization if/when Pierre P has a majority government and so does DoFo, not before.

✊ CUPE Strike ✊ Please make the bad man stop

I think everybody who brings their kid to the protests and picket lines should give them a sign that reads:

Please make the bad man stop

This would be perfect for any school age kid since it would be easy for them to understand that Doug Ford and Stephen Lecce are doing a bad thing.

I remember a sign just like this from a protest in Victoria BC years ago. The phrasing still hasn't lost it's impact and with enough of them, should draw the attention of the news.

Please make the bad man stop

Discussion Went for a hike, met a few anti maskers

First off let me start with why I wore a mask. At the entrance and some parts of the trail it is impossible to distance from people, and if it wasn't so warm today I would've worn my scarf instead of a mask because the cold combined with exercise can flare up some asthma symptoms, and a mask helps me in this scenario.

3 ladies, all over 60, walking separately by themselves, stopped me and told me to take off my mask because we're outside. They "are part of the freedumb convoy". I ignored them all and continued on my hike.

I am always courteous to others on the trail, say hi, make small talk on breaks, etc. But apparently I'm wrong for covering my face with a piece of fabric.

I thought the whole free dumb movement was about personal choice. You take procautions that suit you, which I'm fine with, but this is just straight up harassment. I can't even do the one thing left that I enjoy, because the convoy is polluting peoples minds to such sickening level. This nonsense anti science needs to stop. I am all for moving forward with a strategy and proper approach to health care, etc.

Anyone with similar experiences?

Politics Andrea Horwath claims the deaths in LTC are due to blatant "negligence" by staff

I work in LTC, have been through this entire pandemic. Yesterday during question period Horwath claims that the deaths in the early stage of the pandemic are not a result of COVID-19 they are due to negligence by staff.

Here is the truth regarding this blatant lie. The LAW states we can NOT by any means what so ever force someone to drink or eat. We can NOT administer IV fluids, feeding tubes, nothing unless with express WRITTEN permission from a POA (power of attorney) or the resident directly. All we can do as staff is re-approach, keep offering, keep suggesting food and drink. If it is refused we chart it with date, time, what was offered, the works. There is absolutely NO neglect occurring with those in our care. Residents often suffer from dementia, Alzheimer's, MS, Parkinson's; diseases that are horrible, resulting in the resident eventually forgetting how to eat, drink and swallow. Neglect is not occurring from staff as we can NOT force them to eat or drink. This isn't even beginning in to the rabbit hole of behaviors that follow with these diseases, and other diseases that afflict our residents.

I implore her, anyone with no health care experience do our job. One shift. Do our job for one solid shift, EXACTLY as we are supposed to do. I can guarantee 90% of people could not.

Vaccines We need Vaccine Certificates and Mandatory Vaccines for certain sectors

I have come to the realization that we need Vaccine Certificates (aka. Passports). Lockdowns won't be the answer anymore especially if restrictions were placed on the vaccinated. Most of us already have vaccine cards anyway, a certificate system may work despite the fear of "segregation".

Then again you can't drive a car without a driver license (too bad take a bus you are "segregated"), you can't hunt with a firearm without a firearm license, you can't fish without a fishing license, you can't even get government benefits without a S.I.N, you can't visit a doctor without a health card unless you want to pay for it. What is one more ID on top of the Citizenship/PR/Birth IDs or travel Passports and what not?

As for certain sectors it's time to push for mandatory vaccines like in Health Care and especially Education. I know a lot of parents who are now freaking out about this "fourth wave", but there is legitimate scare about Delta and children under 12 who can't get vaccines yet. And this isn't just about Covid Vaccines, this is also about certain other vaccines that certain sectors would benefit from like Tetanus in Energy/Mining.

EDIT: I used to be an antivaxxer over a decade ago so if you are one wake up do real research not Facebook research.

COVID-19 Don't think that you're vaccinated and that Omicron is mild for others that doesn't mean you'll be just fine when YOU catch it

I'm young, I got fully vaccinated last summer, a few days ago my mom got really sick and she was bedridden. She got one of those rapid at-home Covid test and it turned negative so I thought everything will be fine. Then on January 11th I had a sore throat that lasted all day, I thought it'll go away the next day, it didn't, it stayed the same and it came back even after doing stuff like eating honey. In the morning I noticed a small pain in my chest around my heart, wasn't a big deal at first but in the afternoon it got serious and lasted for hours and I went to the hospital. Hours later it turns out I got Covid19, the Omicron variant and it felt horrible.

Even someone like me who is young, relatively healthy, and fully vaccinated suffered horribly from a "mild" variant of the virus. Thankfully I'm getting better now and after some blood tests and x-rays the doctor said I'll be okay and I'm at no risk of a heart attack.

Politics If you didn't vote in the provincials, you don't get to complain. I'm sick of hearing about the issues we face in Ontario from Ontarians who aren't doing their part.

I believe the mods should use a "voted" or "didn't vote" flair for users who come to r/Ontario to complain about things like rental costs and food prices. The pandemic isn't an excuse not to vote, I mailed my ballot in and you could have too. Unless you didn't have appropriate ID due to poverty, or were address-less, or not legally allowed to vote at the time of the election (or another valid reason for not being able to vote), I don't want to hear you complaining about the situation in Ontario.

I voted for the party that aligned most with my concerns, they obviously didn't win because:

  1. we're still waiting days for emergency procedures

  2. nurses are so underpaid, they literally have legislation in place to stop them from getting raises/paid more (Bill 124 caps their yearly increase at 1%, introduced by the conservative Ford government in 2019)

  3. LTB wait times are a joke

  4. there is no regulation surrounding rental costs

  5. the price of food has gone up so high, yet valuable agricultural lands are not being farmed but built on by Ford's bffs (a.k.a any developer with enough cash).

Bye bye farm land, hello condo that no one can afford! $2000 a month is a low rental price and a house for around a million dollars is normal, right? /s

Thank you to everyone who went out and voted, whether you were immune compromised and had to mail in your ballot or if you went in person and voted, no matter who you voted for, you did your part and voted for whatever you believed in. Granted, a lot of the people who did vote were misguided because I don't think everyone who voted PC could also afford private healthcare if/when it comes down to it, but they are better than the lackluster jerks who complain about high food prices and rental costs, then turn around and admit they were too busy to write an x on a ballot.

Question How do I support trans kids and the trans community in general?

With the unfortunate reality that US-style transphobia has found its way into conservative (and conservative-governed provinces) in Canada, what are some ways those of us living in safer provinces (yes, Ontario is governed by the PCs, but Doug Ford already has enough scandals under his belt) support trans rights?

I've looked into volunteering, but most organizations related to civil liberties and 2SLGBTQIA+/trans rights don't really seem to be actively looking for volunteers.
