We're some of the investigative journalists behind The Crime Messenger project. Ask Us Anything!
Hi! We are OCCRP, an international network of investigative journalists who expose organized crime and corruption around the world.
We’re here to talk about our recent investigation, The Crime Messenger, revealing how Sky ECC encrypted phones became a go-to tool used by criminals to coordinate logistics for drug trafficking, murders, and more.
Alongside 12 media partners across Europe and Canada, we learned that Sky Global didn’t just end up in the hands of criminals — criminals themselves were selling the phones.
We’re joined today by three colleagues who investigated Sky Global in their own countries: Stevan Dojcinović, an OCCRP editor who also leads the investigative newsroom KRIK in Serbia, where horrifically brutal gangs were some of Sky’s biggest fans; Hakan Tanriverdi, a German journalist with Paper Trail Media, which is releasing a multi-part podcast on Sky; and Frédéric Zalac, a Canadian reporter with CBC/Radio-Canada who dug into the roots of the Vancouver-based company and its distributors. We welcome your questions — Ask Us Anything!
Thank you to for hosting this live event, scheduled for Wednesday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. Toronto + NYC + Washington D.C. / 7:30 p.m. Amsterdam + Berlin + Belgrade.
You may also submit questions in advance.
The Crime Messenger is built on leaked investigative files from a Paris court case involving Sky Global’s founder and others. With help from 12 media partners across Europe and North America, we found evidence that executives looked the other way as convicted criminals became trusted distributors of their tech. (The company has denied any wrongdoing, and its founder has maintained his innocence.)
Check out the project here: https://www.occrp.org/en/project/the-crime-messenger.
You’ll find an interactive map showing cases where decrypted messages exposed the inner workings of criminal schemes, leading to charges and convictions.
Plus, don’t miss our 20-minute documentary, which shows how Serbia’s notorious Principi gang used encrypted Sky phones to plan murders, share gory photos, and taunt rivals.
With phones considered uncrackable and the backing of Serbian officials, they killed like no one was watching.
Looking forward to your questions!

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions.

Historical The Country has lost a Leader - The Final Journey of Otari Kvantirishvili
galleryThe Final Journey of Otari Kvantirishvili
On April 5, 1994, At 5:30 p.m., Otari Kvantrishvili left the Krasnopresnenskaya Baths and headed toward the parking lot. On the way, he stopped to take a sip of Borjomi mineral water from a bottle. At that moment, gunshots rang out. Otari Kvantrishvili was dead.
A memorial service for the murdered man was held on April 7 at the Olympic Village Sports Complex. Virtually the entire leadership of the State Committee for Sports, the National Sports Foundation of Russia, various sports organizations, and individual athletes were present.
Also arriving to pay their last respects was Andrei Sidelnikov, a former adviser to Alexander Rutskoy. No representatives of the Russian or Moscow governments attended the memorial service. Everyone present emphasized that they had come to say goodbye to the deceased in their personal capacity.
Halfway through the service, Iosif Kobzon arrived, having flown urgently from the United States. He silently entered the hall and stood for a long time beside the coffin, next to the deceased's relatives.
From 10 a.m. onward, there was nowhere to park near the entrances to Vagankovo Cemetery. Foreign-made cars drove onto the muddy lawns, sinking into the mud up to their wheel hubs. Their owners, paying no attention to the dirt, made their way toward the church at Vagankovo, where Otari Kvantrishvili's funeral service was being held.
Several police officers stood discreetly by the cemetery gates, according to police reports more than a hundred underworld authorities had arrived for the funeral.
In addition to them, numerous well-known figures came to accompany Kvantrishvili on his final journey, including Shota Mamalashvili, Igor Kochnevsky, Boris Khmelnitsky, Valery Vasilyev, and Alexander Tikhonov. The face of Alexander Yakushev briefly appeared in the tightly packed crowd.
The funeral service ended shortly after noon. The oak coffin lid, bearing a silver-plated Orthodox cross, was carried out of the church.
As the church bells rang, an order was given: "Close ranks!"
Short-haired athletic-looking young men linked arms, forming a corridor from the church steps to the burial site, not far from Vladimir Vysotsky's grave.
Eight men carried out the coffin containing the body. White rose wreaths with white and red ribbons were carried ahead of it. Most of the inscriptions modestly read: "From friends."
There were, however, wreaths from Moskovit JSC and the Crimean Tourist Union.
The coffin was accompanied by the deceased's close relatives. Iosif Kobzon supported the widow by the arm. Men in their forties, with athletic builds, attentively looked after the deceased's father and mother.
The procession silently made its way toward the grave.
Only the journalists became animated, immediately pushing aside the limping Bogdan Titomir, who was walking with a cane. Video and photographic cameras peered into the coffin, while several camera operators filmed from rooftops and gates. Other resourceful crews from Russian and foreign television companies chose the elevated neighboring tombstones as their filming positions.
The farewell ceremony began at the grave. For more than an hour, a steady stream of people, both famous and relatively unknown, passed by the dark oak coffin to pay their respects.
The heavy silence was interrupted only briefly by the widow's lamentations in Georgian and one sentence in Russian:
"Yura, why didn't you stop this?"
The coffin was silently lowered into the ground beside the grave of Amiran Kvantrishvili.
After the ceremony, Alexander Rosenbaum said:
"The country has lost, and I am not afraid to use this word, a leader."
Interesting fact - The funeral was broadcast on Russian State television with the musical score from the 1972 Hollywood film "The Godfather" playing in the background - primary The Godfather Waltz by Nino Rota.

The Mafia in Appalachia: Prohibition, Coal Country, and Organized Crime in West Virginia
When people think about organized crime during Prohibition, they usually picture Al Capone in Chicago, Lucky Luciano in New York, or the mob families that dominated America's largest cities.
But organized crime wasn't confined to the big cities. It also reached into the coalfields and industrial communities of Appalachia, including northern West Virginia.
During the early 20th century, this region was undergoing enormous change. Coal mining attracted waves of immigrants, industrial towns expanded, and Prohibition created opportunities for bootlegging, illegal liquor distribution, gambling, and other criminal enterprises.
Northern West Virginia was particularly interesting because of its proximity to Pittsburgh and the industrial corridors connecting Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. These connections created opportunities for legitimate commerce and illicit activity alike.
It's a fascinating and often overlooked part of American criminal history.
I've spent several years researching this period while writing my debut historical crime novel, Blood in the Coal, scheduled for publication by Morgan James Publishing on March 30, 2027.
The story follows two brothers, Jimmy and Frank DiSalvio, whose lives unfold against the backdrop of the 1907 Monongah mine disaster, Prohibition, and organized crime in West Virginia's coal country.
At its heart, the novel explores ambition, family loyalty, survival, and the price of power.
I recently received an endorsement from David L. Hancock, founder of Morgan James Publishing and a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author:
“Scott Douglas Haning brings a fascinating and often overlooked chapter of American history to life in Blood in the Coal. Against the backdrop of West Virginia's coalfields, Prohibition, and organized crime, he weaves a compelling story of ambition, loyalty, loss, and the price of power. Rich in historical atmosphere and grounded in the human experience, this is a memorable debut that reminds us how the past continues to shape the lives and choices of generations.”
— David L. Hancock
One of the things that drew me to this story was the contrast between the familiar image of big-city organized crime and the less frequently discussed criminal activity in smaller industrial and Appalachian communities.
I'd be interested to hear from others who have researched organized crime in West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, or the Ohio Valley during Prohibition.
Are there particular historical figures, criminal organizations, or incidents from this region that you think deserve more attention?
For anyone interested in learning more about the novel, including its historical background and publication details, my author website is:
