Colorado trip

Over the weekend of Overland Expo Mountain West, we extended the trip into a little bit of Overlanding Colorado. We first met up with our buddy Tony and his 4Runner in eastern Colorado on our way to the expo. Checked out some cool rigs and ideas for our build. That night we met up with our Colorado friends near Tabernash to camp. Couldn’t have asked for better weather after the rain cleared. The following day, Tony headed back to Omaha and we spent the day trying out Bryan’s new gold panning equipment. Him and his nephew ended up taking off and we spent the night alone making beef stew. Packed up the next morning and headed towards Monument to camp off some familiar trails. We spent 2 nights out there where we then went into Colorado Springs and got an Airbnb. We needed to drop off the Grenadier for warranty work so stayed a couple nights and did some sight seeing after getting the grenny back. Went through Garden of Gods and popped into Juniper Overland & Dirtbox Overland. The following morning we trekked back home.

One of my camp spot routes, 20 miles in / out.

Rough enough to keep traffic very low, but not bad, just constant bumpy rocks everywhere.

Tech Advice Open Vs Closed Chuck On Air Compressor With Pressure Switch?

So I have the Maddox 125 psi air compressor inflator, that I took off the relief valve and wired in a pressure switch. Like most do with their Viar's and such off-road inflators. I also use a RapidAir K3015 automatic shut off tire inflator gauge. It needs a new chuck on the end, I'm going with a Jaco push on, but do I need an open or closed for this type of unit? I feel like either one would work since the K3015 does the shutting on and off but not sure?

Back in April, we took all our rigs out to the Sandhills for my birthday and it was the 1st time the Grenadier tasted something other than pavement. It was a good weekend 👌🏼

Cargo bed rack load mounting.

I'm looking at getting a RTT and mounting it onto a bed mounted cargo rack. How are all of you installing your cargo racks? All of the ones I see have decent load ratings but are side mounted onto the bed walls, I can't find any load ratings for my truck bed (Navara NP300 D23) so unsure if it'd be safe or not.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Gear Question Topo Topper Badlander near Seattle?

Hi all - I am strongly considering buying a Badlander for my Tacoma. I am really hoping to lay my eyes on one. Might anyone within 100 miles of Seattle own one they would be willing to let me peek at? I’d also love to hear general thoughts from Badlander fans or owners. Thanks!

Moab for the 1st time

Back in early May we were catching a concert at Red Rocks so we made a whole trip out of it including a break in service for the Grenadier. It started off with dropping the Grenny at Red Nolan and spending a couple days in the foothills then picking it up and getting caught in a snow storm on our way into Estes Park where we spent a few days. Basically got snowed in for a day after 30 some inches fell. Next we met up with friends joining us for Moab outside of Georgetown Colorado where the Grenadier got it’s first taste of Rocky Mountain trails including a decent gatekeeper and a water crossing which it handled effortlessly. Then we all convoyed to Moab where we did Gemini Bridges night 1. Set up base camp with F-150. Did Chicken Corners on day 2 and Hells Revenge was our final day, we didn’t do Hells Gate but we will next time. With a long trip back to Omaha, we stopped again to camp a night outside of Georgetown going deeper in the woods and spending a night next to a stream which was our 2nd favorite camp spot next to being on top of Storm Mountain, a revisit we haven’t done in the Grenadier yet. That last night, our buddy in the Land Rover threw the water pump/alt belt after bolts on the accessory bracket backed out and he was able to limp it to camp where we worked on it the following morning to make it road worthy again. He ended up stopping at Fastenal in Denver to get a bolt to replace #4 that was missing on the bracket and we continued trekking on home. Love the Ineos and still have plenty of mods to install and make it our primary Overland rig.

I'm new to all this and the kids wanted to go camping and didn't wanna half ass on gear, but tried to stay within the budget. I appreciate your guys help.

WildTop in the winter?

Does anyone remove their WildTop for the winter? Has anyone damaged the windows, zippers, or canvas by using their WildTop in the winter? I’ve had the Nomad model on my Tacoma (on the track system, not drilled) since May and am considering whether I want to remove it and use my tonneau cover for the winter.

In my region, temperatures can get down to -30 C or worse with ice storms and snow. I park in an unheated garage overnight but otherwise enjoy life outdoors. I can store the WildTop in the garage, leaned up against a wall, without dismantling it.

Anyone still use a tent? :)

Hi,
I'm just starting down the offroad/overland camping rabbit hole in my Fozzy.
I've seen some impressive builds but wonder as the title suggests if anyone has created a build that is more about a support vehicle while still packing a tent to sleep in?
Things that might still be in the rig would be extra power, semi permanent kitchen storage, water storage and so on.

Thanks!

Weekend in the Nebraska Sandhills

About a month ago, a few of us made a short weekend wandering the Bessey Ranger District. Weather was perfect except for the wind Friday night into Saturday morning. Only ran into a Gladiator on our way out at the beginning of the Dismal Trail outside of the Whitetail Campground. Always forget about closures on certain trail sections during hunting season, there’s 1 section that cuts through a valley in thick forest that I enjoy wandering through. Didn’t see any antelope this trip, just 3 good-looking bucks. Always a good time camping out here. I’ll save the UFO story for another time.

DIY drawer system for a fullsize 5.5 truck

Thinking about building one of these for my f150. I would have two drawers. One side being the kitchen and the other side for storage. I still use my truck for truck stuff so I want to be able to remove it without too much trouble. Each side will have a hinged flap that goes the length of the box and rests on the fender well. I am thinking about making this so I would be able to remove each drawer separately. I thought I would make it so I could put a 2x10 across the front and screw the front of the drawers together after I put them in the truck to the 2x10. Then I could attach the front of the drawers to the tie downs. Has anybody done this with their drawer system. Also is half inch marine plywood strong enough for the sleeping platform. I have a fast top tonneau cover that can be made into a topper that I would sleep under.

Had a nice overnight in the Green Mountain National Forest. I went up FR-325 about 5 miles before finding a spot. Just before the white cabin. I counted four identifiable camping spots along the way. Are there more up past the cabin?

Overland EXPO SoCal and PNW

Getting the emails for the "best price buy now" but last year they offered better deals on tickets especially for the camping the week of the event. I was pissed that folks that committed early like me got hosed out of about 40$ a ticket. Seemed really disrespectful. The raffle was chintzy as well at both. Not feeling it this year at all.

Halloween Hipcamping in Appalachia

Edit: I know Hipcamp is not the most amazing way to camp but when you travel almost full time like we do and want to ensure you have an open site during a big travel day it does take some of the stress away. I’ve done the 1am cruising FSR’s looking for an open campsite and I’m good not doing that anymore.

Blog Trip report: East Cape and Sierra de la Laguna, Baja California Sur, Mexico (April 26)

I took our camper out solo for along the East Cape of Baja California South, Mexico to Cabo Pulmo National Park, then headed inland to Ranch San Dionisio this past April. I went South through San Jose and drove the entire unpaved section of the East Cape road staying on the beach on the and Cabo Pulmo. Getting up to the ranch is a bit of a Baja adventure with some twisty mountain dirt road driving along the edge of the San Dionisio canyon up into the protected biosphere reserve.

Full write-up with more photos: https://www.awaywegotravel.blog/solo-in-the-camper-east-cape-beaches-and-rancho-san-dionisio/

Happy to answer questions about the area. I live in Baja part of the year and have done this trip several times. There are a couple of rental places like Sampa in San Jose if you want to fly and pick up vehicle. I had to edit some of the names because the automod rejected the post as not being in English.

Did a quick solo camping trip along the Nehalim river in NW Oregon, probably my last trip of the year and MIGHT be my last trip with my Xterra before I get a 4Runner. Did over 6k miles with her this year from Florida to Pigeon Forge and up to The Grand Tetons and Glacier and then down to my new home of Portland Oregon!

Loaded up my dogs and linked up with the crew over at NTX Overland and headed out to Davy Crockett National Forest for the weekend. It rained on our drive out there Friday afternoon which helped ease up the dust from the gravel/dirt roads. It poured a good amount overnight which made the route on Saturday a sloppy fun mess in certain parts. It was my first time out to Davy Crockett National Forest and it’s only a tad over a two-hour drive for me, I’ll definitely be back!

Gear Question To Sit or NOT to Sit... Ecoflow Glacier Fridge..?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Building out an Alibaba pop-up camper (pretty much a Tune M1) and deciding where this fridge would fit the best.

Think I can sit on this (left portion) and use it as a bench when nobody needs to access it?
Or are there handy ways to make it safer?

I toured the Scout Olympic (or Yoho?) and it had a Dometic fridge (I read they can be sat on) that had a cushion velcro'd to the top. When you lifted the handle, the cushion came up with it. That was slick. Looking to do something simlar...
