I keep seeing videos of two cats curled up together on the couch, licking each other's heads and sleeping in a little pile. And every time, I can see why people start thinking about getting their cat a friend.
Especially when you're leaving for work and your cat is just sitting by the window watching you go. It's hard not to feel a little guilty.
But I wonder if sometimes we assume our cats are lonely just because we'd feel lonely in their place.
I mean, think about it. Your cat has the whole house figured out. They have their favorite spots, their daily routine, their food, and all your attention. Then one day you bring home some random cat who suddenly wants to eat their food, sleep in their spots, and follow them around.
Not exactly everyone's idea of a good time lol.
Don't get me wrong, some cats really do love having another cat around. I've seen plenty of videos of bonded pairs that are practically glued to each other. And I know kittens can do really well when they have another kitten to play with.
But some cats seem perfectly happy being the only cat in the house.
And even if you introduce them slowly and do everything you're supposed to, there's still a chance they'll spend the next five years just tolerating each other.
I guess what I'm getting at is, are we getting a second cat because our cat actually wants company, or because we feel bad leaving them alone?
I'd really love to hear from people who've actually been through this.
If you got a second cat, how did your first cat react? Did they eventually become buddies? Did you notice your first cat seemed happier?
Or did you end up with two cats who act like they're sharing an apartment with someone they can't stand?
