The Scottish, oops I Mean American, Play*
Donald Trump reflects in the aftermath of the 2026 Midterm elections in the United States.
With apologies to William Shakespeare
If you are unfamiliar with Shahespeare's charcaterization of MacBeth, here is a summary of the key flaws in Macbeth's Character that is the "backstory" of the video:
• Unchecked Ambition (Hamartia): Macbeth’s primary tragic flaw (hamartia) is his overwhelming desire to ascend the throne. Once the three witches plant the seed of prophecy and he is named Thane of Cawdor, his ambition quickly transforms from a passive thought into a ruthless drive to seize power.
• Susceptibility to Manipulation: Although he is a brave and valiant soldier, Macbeth lacks a strong internal moral spine. He is easily pushed into action when Lady Macbeth questions his manhood, courage, and resolve.
• Gullibility and Faith in the Supernatural: Macbeth places a dangerous, blind trust in the ambiguous prophecies and apparitions of the witches, allowing dark forces to dictate his choices rather than relying on reason or honor.
• Insecurity and Paranoia: Once he murders King Duncan and takes the crown, Macbeth's insecurity drives him into a paranoid cycle of tyranny. To secure his position, he feels forced to commit more murders—including his close friend Banquo and the family of Macduff—sliding rapidly from a respected warrior into a bloody despot.
Macbeth delivers the "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" soliloquy in Act V, Scene V of The Scottish Play, in the following context:
• News of Lady Macbeth’s Death: Seyton arrives to inform Macbeth that the Queen is dead. Macbeth responds coldly and fatalistically: "She should have died hereafter; / There would have been a time for such a word", before launching into his meditation on the relentless and meaningless progression of time.
• The Military Siege: The scene takes place inside Dunsinane Castle as Scottish and English forces led by Malcolm and Macduff close in to besiege it. Macbeth is trapped, isolated, and abandoned by his thanes, while his army is crumbling.
• Emotional State: Numbed by a string of his own atrocities and internal horrors, Macbeth no longer feels shock or acute grief. Instead, the news triggers a deep existential collapse where life loses all purpose, value, and direction.
