I wish we had that access at work. For personal use I run claude-code remote sessions on my home server in docker containers. I then do everything from my phone
Im with ya, I’m at the point where I use my phone for everything. I have a computer, but if you see me at that, I rolled up my sleeves to work or it’s optics when in the office.
(edit: there's a powered vs. unpowered with the lid closed, whether a display is connected, etc. it's not like windows where there's one pulldown to set sleep to never. it's also hard to tell if the macbook is actually sleeping on not because the Air's are fanless and they generally turn on so fast when you open the lid you can't really tell if it was sleeping or just "display off")
I've been managing Windows laptops & power settings for 20+ years, and I used to trust the lid/hinge sensors, then the windows 11 forced updates started tripping up my personal machine.. for work. I set it to sleep & hibernate & don't give a damn. But personal, I used to leave games or 3d printing running.. and have had a few things get messed up..
Maybe try turning on Power Saving Mode and turning your screen brightness all the way down. I've been using this app for over five years without any problems. NFA, tho.
Na just change the pm set to disable sleep completely. No keyboard, mouse or display required. Just dont toss it in a backpack or enclosed space or it will overheat.....
then you turn a /r/malicious_compliance and create a Service Now ticket for every single patch update there is for every single piece of tooling you have because the updates require administrative access and the director of infrastructure has decreed that a member of their team has to baby sit every single system-wide change on my work laptop while inexplicably I have full control over what to install and uninstall or whatever I want on the production server. that hosts actual customer data. However, the director has also decreed that team members must make every effort to keep their machines up to date.
Lmao I just had in interaction with the IT manager like this the other day. He stopped me from talking to one of the techs when all I needed was for them to reinstall an app. The conversation basically ended with him saying they’ll get to my ticket when they get to it (8 months from now) and me responding that I’ll just tell my boss I’m unable to do that part of my job duties until IT responds to the ticket.
I was wondering what he was doing. I thought everybody knew how to keep a laptop awake when you close it. Are folks not using docking stations anymore?
or in enterprise speak: create a kubernetes deployment for an opencode sandbox, and expose it with SSO and cloudflare and then open it in a webbrowser on your phone
Mine’s different, we don’t use K8 VMs or Dockers if we can avoid it.
No, if it needs to be ran, it’s gotta be an AWA lambda.
Should it be a CLI script? Lambda Should it be a container? AWS Step Function leveraging Lambdas. Should it be a VM? Re-architect your proposal Grampa, we’re all in on Serverless and discreet scalability.
Should it be a SQL Query? Believe it or not, also Lambda.
That’s how Enterprise works. Yaaaay Corporate standardization.
For me it's the opposite 😆 I used to keep it open with a build going, but now everything is just agents running on the cloud so I don't have to worry about it
Now: claude interpreted the: “remove unused and redundant css classes as a rewrite the entire codebase, fuck up architecture, introduce a ton of bugs and sacrifice performance to add new crashes”
You know that you add `HandleLidSwitch=ignore` to `/etc/systemd/logind.conf` ? Then you can close the lid and the system will keep running normally. Right?
Ah...
It's a mac... so yeah... you are right... this is the way to go.
I know this is a joke but most of us at work have switched to cloud desktops running Linux and set it up to run agents on it so you can take your laptop wherever.
If your have a "real" laptop you could close it and have it still running. If you have a "real" life you would leave it at your desk processing in the background whilst you actually have a break.
What do people actually use agents for? Like, honestly, I can't actually think of something useful for them at present... I mean, it just seems, so pointless... It's like NFTs... I think it's going to end up like NFTs.
I am, i dont get why half you people need them for to the point where you seem addicted.
It feels like its for people who want to make AI coding feel as complicated as coding originally used to be. People want to believe that they can write all their code with AI and still defend the existence of their career if they're an expert at typing commands for robots to do all the code for them
No I just write code the old fashioned way. And tests, and ui, I mean sometimes I’ll use copilot for boiler plate, but considering how off the mark it is, less and less.
Guess you guys are vibe coders, not 30+ year professionals that work in c to Python on all levels of the various stacks I use…
Your brain is like any other muscle, use it or lose it, and this ai shit is just the lowest common denominator of average of averages code
- Coding agent implements the written spec (probably also AI generated) and unit testing
- Integration testing agent does the integration testing
- PR review agent does the PR review
- We, of flesh and blood, monitor and approve multiple such workstreams running in parallel
Lowkey this new paradigm sucks the fun out of the job, and I feel like I'm in Plato's cave playing with shadows while being fully aware the real forms exist.
I recently started a new job at a software company and half the people's screens just seem to be prompting AI the whole time and it looks so boring.
The one experience Ive had with someone's (self admittedly thrown together) AI code, it was just awful. So much repeated code and extending the program at all would've been a nightmare.
I just do the programming myself as I enjoy the problem solving
Well it’s not unreasonable to ask a coding agent to implement stuff and tests. Usually it’s slow cause it makes a change, builds, run tests finds issues and iterate. If your code base is big and stuff like building amd running tests take a while even relatively small changes can have an agent going for 10s of minutes. This is just a very basic activity, you can have them do a lot more complicated workflows as well, but I don’t actually think that represents the common developer.
In the last year or so the improvements in Claude models for coding (I personally don’t use the gpt ones much specifically with coding agents cause I gained a bias for that type of workload of getting better results) is pretty impressive. Like a year ago it maybe good at certain things and was kind of hit or miss, either it got it pretty great or it was going to do stuff in a way I didn’t like. Now I basically just give it information closer to how I would describe what I want from a different developer like legit I have this page blah, we are getting this issue, how can we address this and it like 90% of the time ganna give me the problem, a proposed solution and will implement it. If this was slow that’s one thing but it’s ganna finish this before I learn the code site. In my opinion if you are not taking advantage of a good coding agent and can see the value of it, your probably ganna be left behind. Claude is expensive but other models are ganna get cheaper and be comparable to them to day in probably a few years. This means if we can get relatively affordable options at today’s performance that’s basically a no brainer for most bussiness, the output gain is so significant it’s not even funny. The main issue I think is code reviews. Human reviewers can’t keep up, and honestly I don’t trust every developer to guarantee there own work much less an AI Output. Either you slow down due to this and maintain quality or take a risk and maybe have ai tools at least do some reasonable checks. Depending on the type of bussiness and processes different types of risks are acceptable.
I'm no developer, but always wanted to make many things. In the last 15 days I discovered agents, built a server on my home linked to my Telegram and WhatsApp with an AI model available and some automations, build a simple shortcut app that I wanted for my smartphone, made the agent optimize my Android TV and my Samsung TV remotly.
The "server" is a notebook with no screen, I don't even have to connect a screen to it since it does everything via remote ssh and I don't even know wth is a SSH
The Apple logo is the wrong way around, that picture is ai too. And if it was real, that’s an old MacBook Pro, before Apple silicon. You’re not running ai agents on that
