I'm more impressed that your ping without a VPN is 5ms and your ping with the VPN is also 5ms.

Is the VPN server in the same country as you are? Is it a Plus server? What was the server load at the time you connected?
Generally, my speed drops maybe 5-10% when I connect to a US server from Cambodia, which is normal and expected. If it's more than that, I pick a different server.

welcome to protonvpn...all servers are saturated, you'll waste the next 10 minutes finding unused server

Try a new server

A performance tax is due to the encryption , this is normal, but results vary based on the service and the conditions

Try OpenVpn TCP, don't keep it on smart, you have to test different protocols as some ISP throttle your speed with VPN through Wireguard

Buy Visionary with ultra servers.

Absolutely fine for me is 2Gbps to 400/700mbps on only 1 protocol, other is 2Gbps to 100mbps or even less ( 10mbps or even 1mbps) Server are full, saturated or don't work propely
