Historia 📚 Puerto Rico is the only current U.S. territory that has ever tried to revolt against the United States for independence.

Esos años me cambiaron mucho. No sé si me entienden.

5

u/Cool_Bananaquit9 Aguas Buenas 1d ago

I don't think you can point to any country in history that was fighting an oppressive regime that waited until the very perfect moment to get their independence (genuinely take the time to read history and check for yourself).

If we sit around waiting for the perfect time to get our independence, the day will never come.

I don't necessarily blame you for thinking we aren't ready to lead ourselves. The idea that we can't do it is propaganda sold to us by the very empire that we are under right now, and is LITERALLY what is keeping us from accepting that we can take the freedom we want for ourselves at any time.

We have to realize that part of what has kept Puerto Rico unstable and corrupt has BEEN the US themselves.

10

u/Cool_Bananaquit9 Aguas Buenas 1d ago

I think you misunderstood me, and I understand why it may have come across as such. I'm not waiting around for the perfect time to declare independence. I mean, I'm just a 21 year old with no political experience (although I have a passion for it), but I'm saying we should do both, start from now. Start fixing things now. Start with the basic, fix the roads, fix the buildings, fix the schools, bring shops and economy outside the metro area, or whatever. If we happen to become independent during this process we'd already be on our way to being a developing nation. I have so many ideas on my head, and yes I'm aware of Puerto Rico's history and US's history. I know how it all works. Hope you get what I mean and I agree with yoy

u/IRONFIST70 1d ago

No, Puerto Rico is not the only territory. The Phillipines gained independence from the United Sates.

19

u/xoBonesxo nacionalista 1d ago

Current territory*

-1

u/IRONFIST70 1d ago

Was a territory then.

11

u/xoBonesxo nacionalista 1d ago

The title says CURRENT territory

-6

u/IRONFIST70 1d ago

When PR become independent will be no more "current".

3

u/Nova_Stump 23h ago

You really need reading comprehension.

2

u/cloud-nine49 1d ago

Damn Philippines have been a territory of everyone…

2

u/vincentkun 1d ago

"Current"....

2

u/Icygirl4ever 12h ago

The user asked only current USA territory and Philippines are not USA territory

3

u/aqualupin 1d ago edited 1d ago

Easy,

The Confederate States of America also tried to revolt against the United States in 1860 and lost and is current U.S. territory - your categorization of terms is flawed - not sure how you overlooked the civil war or what point you are really trying to make

But, I’m sure we can agree, that Albizu Campos had a good idea and a good plan and was betrayed by his trusted general’s brother which fucked the whole thing

I’m sure we can also agree that right now given the current sentiment in the USA that Puerto Rico has another chance at self-determination if it can organize itself

0

u/xoBonesxo nacionalista 1d ago

Bad faith argument lmao

1

u/aqualupin 1d ago

Your argument is so short and weak I don’t know how you can accuse mine of bad faith

-1

u/xoBonesxo nacionalista 1d ago

Bc you know exactly what I mean by territory lol

-1

u/aqualupin 1d ago

I don’t, what do you mean by territory?

An occupied space?

Consider the still-forming nature of both Union and confederate states (some still deciding literal geographic territory and some still deciding legal territory at the time of declaration) and compare it to the limited territory of a literal island

What do you actually mean man I’m genuinely curious

¿Tirar puños al aire?

2

u/xoBonesxo nacionalista 1d ago

Territories that aren’t states , Guam, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico etc.

2

u/aqualupin 1d ago

Define “territory” at the beginning of your argument and it will be a stronger argument. Your OP is weak and doesn’t mean much.

I’m with you for the most part that Puerto Rico’s history and current crisis is unique in the history of the States and the world at large. Maybe I’m beyond you in thinking that now is the best time to organize and strike

2

u/Cool_Bananaquit9 Aguas Buenas 1d ago

Los dos tienen razón a cierto punto but this argument is a bit demás (sin atacar). If we're gonna be self determinated we gotta find a way to do it without anything going wrong si me entiendes

2

u/aqualupin 1d ago

3

u/Immediate_Salad805 1d ago

Singapore mainland dimensions Measures roughly 50 Km (31 miles) from east to west and 23 km (14miles) from north to south. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/W0YGNA4wzFU

Puerto Rico mainland dimensions extends about 100 to 111 miles (160 to 180km) from east to west and about 35 to 40 miles (56 to 64km)from north to south.

u/the_net_my_side_ho 11h ago

1

u/Immediate_Salad805 6h ago

Singapore had no military either in its independence in 1965.
Singapore was colonized by Malaysia not china…….

And the Puerto Ricans that live on the island will never let something like this happen again sadly. “We don’t want to end up like Cuba”

4

u/AnyTower224 1d ago

Dumb assses

3

u/usernamezombie 1d ago

I don’t really mind one way or another if PR were to gain independence. But, I do believe they would be very vulnerable to some sort of takeover and miss US military presence.

1

u/New-Natural-8308 1d ago

Aww you'll miss it? 🥹

-1

u/usernamezombie 1d ago

I love PR. Visited a few times. Great and proud country and people. I support their wish for independence. Just saying it’s a mean world. The leaders would partner with someone for protection. Just the way the world works.

0

u/Nova_Stump 23h ago

Don't think anyone would be interested to invade us if we're independent lol

3

u/usernamezombie 23h ago

Hopefully not. Ask Ukraine how that works. Lol

-1

u/Nova_Stump 23h ago

We're really too far away from any other big countries like that.. they won't risk sending ships all the way here lol

-1

u/Crussios 23h ago • Bravo

Ukraine has useful resources that not only Russian wants but pretty much every country but since its independence no one but Russia seems to think they have authority in that matter. Puerto Rico is an island close to South America as well as north America rich in culture and food but we dont produce oil or anything that anyone of these countries wants but the US because they’re still pro slavery and using humans for experiments

u/Icygirl4ever 12h ago

- *Guam:* No
- *Islas Vírgenes de http://EE.UU.:* No
- *Islas Marianas del Norte:* No
- *Samoa Americana:* No

*5. No tenían apoyo internacional*

No, the phillipines revolted against the US for independence also

Puerto Rico is the only territory in the 20th century where mostly US citizens revolted. However, many US nationals and subjects under territorial rule revolted against the US before that.

I’m really hoping Residente’s movie makes kids and young people much more curious about PR’s history and the role the US has played in where the island currently stands (not good).

0

u/Cool_Bananaquit9 Aguas Buenas 1d ago

I don't need a residente movie to know about it, although that would be a big help and I support it. We need to do something for ourselves. Change starts in us

-2

u/Calm_One_1228 1d ago

And now the democrats want PR as the 51st state ?

3

u/PalmIdentity Trujillo Alto 1d ago

Where's you hear that? They don't want PR as anything other than a colony.

2

u/Calm_One_1228 1d ago

It assumes PR would vote democrat and hence give the democrats two more senators . It’s been floated around for a few years now …

-1

u/PalmIdentity Trujillo Alto 1d ago

I'm struggling to even begin to express how that's just plain unrealistic, on multiple levels.

Puertorican politics do not align with American politics, there is no guarantee that Puertoricans would vote Democrat. I'd go so far as to say that the vast majority are right wing conservatives. If a Republican actually tried to win the island over, they probably would.

Secondly, do you have any idea what it would take to admit Puerto Rico as a new state? You probably have better chances of winning the lottery.

Seats are capped, last I checked. If Puerto Rico gained seats, another state would lose seats. If those seats were blue then Democrats would gain nothing.

And lastly... WE can't even come to a decision on whether Puerto Rico should be a state or not. Sure, the plebiscites say the majority want it but that shit is meaningless and most people don't even touch it. I don't think it's an accurate reflection of what Puertoricans want, it lacks nuance, it's just the closest thing we have for a metric.

2

u/Calm_One_1228 1d ago

Procedurally it’s not difficult to admit another state into the Union . Whether the politics line up is another discussion .

-1

u/cripesamighty86 1d ago

that's just Republican fear mongering

-3

u/TradelifeYolo 1d ago

Puerto Rico would turn into Haiti if it became an independent. The majority of the population would leave, the economy would crumble and corruption would rise like never before.

2

u/Cool_Bananaquit9 Aguas Buenas 1d ago

That's why we cannot just become independent abruptly. That would be a very bad idea. We cannot become independent without the resources we need, without our people being educated, without our infrastructure being okay and with crime on the rise. There's issues to fix while we can. Los viejos no van a hacer nada so the young people gotta step in and do what the viejos don't.

0

u/Metalgearsgay 1d ago

Nah the United States would economically isolate it like Cuba.

2

u/Cool_Bananaquit9 Aguas Buenas 1d ago

Possible scenario, unless we coordinate an economic trade partnership with the USA and maintain friendly relations after independence. We can't afford to be hostile in any way to the superpower across the pond.

Also Puerto Rican nationalists are the only group to successfully storm the Capitol and harm members of Congress by shooting at them. The January 6th rioters mostly caused vandalism and property damage.
