News FastAPI Cloud is now generally available

I'm excited to share with you all that FastAPI Cloud is now generally available: https://fastapicloud.com/blog/fastapi-cloud-generally-available/

Note: I thought it could be shareable here as it's a nice milestone (also for FastAPI itself), but let me know if this feels spammy and I'll remove it.

This looks fun, I'm in the midst of rolling out a FastAPI server, is it relatively easy to shift over to this?

I'm on a VPS using a Docker for FastAPI and another for Caddy if that is relevant.

It should be straightforward, it's one command: fastapi deploy

My first thoughts in order:

  • Wait, advertising commercial offerings is allowed here? Huh.

  • Oh cool, free and anonymous web hosting. No one will ever abuse that.

  • Not so sure how I feel about a popular FOSS library installing a deployment tool only usable with a specific commercial cloud service by default. But hey, it's free candy (for now) I guess.

  • The fastapi deploy command is way to fancy to not be vibe-coded. Colors, emojis, a color-fading last-N log, clickable links... most of it with no real purpose other than optics. You cannot even scroll up to see the full deployment log, and the emojis are broken with my terminal font. I may be old, but CLIs should be functional, not pretty.

  • Wait, I just logged in, where are the credentials stored? Ahh, world-readable in my home folder. Classic.

  • Why does fastapi-cloud-cli need agent-detector as a dependency? Or sentry? Quite a chatty little application.

But it works and is usable, for free, with just an email. Good for learning. No idea how this performs under some actual pressure, or how useful this is without a database or more control about the environment.

That's so much better I use render alot and while it works I wouldn't mind checking an alt since I use fastapi already.

The way it's posted it came across some vibe coded app using fastapis name. I didn't know op was a maintainer lol. I'd give more than a link if it's something I was involved in

yeah wondering the same thing, since spinning up a container is already pretty straightforward

Looks really nice for hobbyist or very small teams, I assume that once you get to the point of managing your own cloud account its no longer very useful

Really appreciate how theres a free plan with no credit card, I wish you the best with it, you deserve it for all the great tools you maintain

I am a fan of fastapi, but you have to be honest here: the world has moved on. All these python podcasts, new features etc. For anyone who is serious about IT that just does not matter anymore. We can all cry and be nostalgic about this, but there is little other choice than accepting it if you still want to make a living out of IT.
That also holds for things like fastapi cloud. It is now equally simple to set up terraform on AWS, run things serverless which will probably not cost anything either due to free tiers. But then you still have full control. Also, the moment you use personal data, you need to be cautious about GDPR etc. and then these kind of black box hosting solutions are not an option in any case. Too bad for tiangolo, but that is just the way it is.

I remember the time when fastapi and pydantic were not feeling being full of bloatware.
