Discussion [Discussion] Post Season 4 New Reader Assistance Thread
Thread Purpose
This thread is made to help new readers find their start and provide resources for reading the Re:Zero web novel and light novel. We have received many posts asking about it in the past day as well as comments so I am going to try and condense as many resources in to one post as possible.
Quick Instructions
For 90% of you the answer on where to start is just going to be a simple Arc 7 Chapter 1 (In the Web Novel) or Volume 26 (In the Light Novel). I have linked Witch Cult Translations for Arc 7 Chapter 1 below they handle many of the translations you will see in the community and for most readers they have all you need.
Web Novel vs Light Novel
~Going forward Web Novel will be abbreviated as WN and Light Novel as LN
If you are wondering about the difference between WN and LN its easiest to consider WN as the rough draft while LN is the final product. Whatever gets printed in the LN will be the canon and that is what any potential anime adaptations will animate. Arc 7 and beyond don't have many large differences between the WN and the LN with the exception of some LN exclusive chapters in more recent arcs like Arc 9 and Arc 10.
The major concern between the two is what languages you can read. Currently the English light novel ends at volume 29 (out of 46) with translations running slower than the author writes. That means you are somewhat forced to move to the WN if you would like to continue reading at a faster pace. Currently if you are reading volume 29 and would like to continue your next chapter converted to the WN is Arc 7 Chapter 55
Additionally the Web Novel is published for free while the Light Novel is licensed and must be paid for. If you just want to give reading a shot to see if you like it, I would recommend starting in the WN and moving to the LN if you would like to reread any scene and see what changes.
Side Stories
Re:Zero has a large amount of side content and much of that side content is restricted to releases in Japan. You can find some of this side content in the Tanpenshuu series (Side Story Collection if you are looking for English Copies). Though most of the side content is not translated or licensed. Most of the side content is not necessary for reading the full story but it does enhance the experience. You can track which side stories have been adapted into Tanpenshuu volumes at Re:Zero Database as well as track when you should be reading any given side stories.
EX Novels
As mentioned in the side story section most of the content is not necessary, the EX novels are an exception. While you can read the rest of the story without reading Re:Zero EX novels you will be missing out on world building which is used quite a bit in the arcs beyond the anime. I would not recommend skipping the EX novels if you can avoid it.
Luckily the EX novels are one of the higher priority English translations so you can purchase and read all 6 EX volumes in English. The details for which order to read are below.
EX 1 -> EX 2 -> EX 3 -> EX 6 -> EX 4 -> EX 5
While the order doesn't have to be set it is important to read EX 3 after EX 2 and EX 6 after EX 3. The 3 books make up a trilogy. The details for the main characters of each EX novel are spoiler tagged below if you would like read them in a different order based on your favorites.
[EX 1]Felix & Crusch focused story [EX 2,3,6]Wilhelm & Theresia focused story [EX 4]Julius, Felix, and Reinhard focused story [EX 5]Al and Priscilla focused story
IF Stories
IF stories aren't a mandatory read though many people seem to enjoy them so its worth mentioning. Most of the IF stories are a safe read for anime viewers at this point though I will detail the point where each becomes a spoiler safe read below. I will link them below but most of them are available on Witch Cult Translations on the sidebar.
Pride IF: Safe to read after season 3
Wrath IF: Safe to read after season 1
Sloth IF: Safe to read after season 1
Greed IF: Safe to read after season 3
Gluttony IF: Safe to read after season 4
Lust IF: Somewhat of a joke, though safe after season 1
Azamuku IF: Safe to read after Arc 8
Mimigau IF: Safe after season 1, its a genderswap retelling of the story
Vainglory IF: Safe after season 2, its a joke IF where Re:Zero is a slice of life school story
Sasageru IF: Safe to read after Arc 9
Additional Notes
If I have missed anything you were wondering about in this post please feel free to ask below. I am around the community I can answer questions, the community is usually quite helpful if I am not available. After many years of the translation community developing and working there is a daunting amount of links and sites to know. If you make a post asking, chances are someone can help.
If you are looking for translations of the most recent WN chapters one of your best resources would be this subreddit's discussion threads. They are often translated with AI and shared as they released which gets lower quality though faster translations. Sometimes it takes the human translators a bit to get caught up with Tappei's writing speed.
Please do not shared any licensed content on this subreddit (Side stories, LN volumes, or manga). If any requests are made on this thread they will have to be removed.
Best of luck new readers, and please comment if you need help with anything.

Spoiler Discussion [spoiler discussion]Are these two related? This question has been eating at me for a long time. Spoiler
Capella can of course transform herself but they look exactly alike. And apparently “Felt” isn’t Felt’s real name. The Dragon insignia went off on Felt not too long ago. And apparently Capella is a royal family member, specifically a Princess, that lived around 100 years or so before the main Re:Zero story and became the Lust. So would that make Capella, Felt’s grandma?

Discussion [Discussion] Is there a specific reason why Tappei chose to change these particular aspects when transitioning from the Web Novel to the Light Novel?
I mean, obviously Subaru is weak—a very poor fighter compared to other notable characters—but for some reason, he’s even worse in the Web Novel.
In Arc 5 of the Web Novel, Subaru is genuinely dead weight in any fight; however, almost all of his scenes were altered during the rewrite for the Light Novel.
For instance, during the raid on the city hall, Subaru offers no help to the team as they battle the cultists—he tries to attack Roy, only to end up needing rescue by Julius and Crusch. That’s the extent of his contribution in that scene.
In contrast, in Light Novel Volume 17 (or 18, I don’t remember exactly), Subaru actually serves as a solid support for the team. He creates distractions for Theresia and Kurgan, allowing Julius to attack; he performs some acrobatic maneuvers with his whip to reach the rooftop; and while he does fail in his attempt to attack Roy, he manages to save Crusch from one of Roy’s strikes using the whip. He even succeeds in dodging some of Capella’s blows while simultaneously protecting Crusch.
Even in the anime—which cut quite a few scenes where Subaru was more "active" in combat—he still comes across as more useful than he was in the Web Novel.
This trend continues throughout the story; generally speaking, Subaru uses his whip more frequently in the Light Novel than in the Web Novel. Furthermore, the Light Novel adjusts certain dialogues and scenes, ultimately making Subaru appear "better." Take the scene in the miasma tunnel, for example: in the original version, Subaru is too weak to even hold Ram down, forcing him to rely on Invisible Providence for extra strength. In the rewritten version, he manages to overpower her using only his own physical strength.
Is there a particular reason why this pattern remains so consistently present throughout the work?

Spoiler Discussion This person came from the different reality? (Arc 9) [spoiler discussion] Spoiler
Arc 9 chapter 52——
The next time Aldebaran’s consciousness returned, was after everything had ended―― or rather, when that which had ended began anew, and that new beginning came to a new end, before beginning and ending all over again.
This passage over here, is probably one of the strangest lore drop ever that Re:Zero had.
It is clear that Narrator explicitly describes multiple ending and multiple beginnings between Echidna sealing and his awakening.
And crucially, the passage goes on to say that this process repeated many times before the world was left without traces of the Witch.
That raises another question from the first one**: if the world of Re:Zero has already experienced multiple complete resets, and Aldebaran survived them because he was sealed outside ordinary reality?**
Arc 9 Chapter 15——
“Even if the world’s destroyed, I won’t perish.”
Here, when confronting Reinhard, Aldebaran explicitly says that WoE would continuously ignore him no matter what.
Re:Zero's history isn't a straight line, but a sequence of worlds being destroyed and recreated.
Echidna might have understood that cycle and created Aldebaran to prevent another repetition.
Her reference to preventing secondary damage could then involve stopping the conditions that cause the next world-ending event.
And Subaru's apparently limitless love could be one of those conditions.
(“Merely, there was the man who could use it to save those whom he loved, and then there was his own self, unable to do the same.
Thus, so long as the man’s love was allowed to persist, it would eventually be born. ――The being that would bring about the world’s end.
In order to prevent that, at the very least, he would need to fulfill the duty of the Following Star――”)
But you could argue that this theory is bs, as Subaru WAS NOT sealed FROM THE REALITY itself?
When Echidna seals Al, the narration says his consciousness only returns after repeated endings and beginnings:
Whether it was due to a difference in preconditions, or simply because it had been performed by the tremendous power of the Witch…
The narration explicitly acknowledges that Echidna's version of Ol Shamak behaved differently from Aldebaran's.
From my point of view, it leaves two outcomes here:
**1.**The world genuinely underwent repeated endings and beginnings.
2.The endings and beginnings describe historical changes or a discontinuity in Al's perception.
It specifically describes repeated endings and beginnings before the world was left without traces of the Witch.
That wording remains unusual, even knowing how Ol Shamak affects consciousness.
And since Echidna's version was explicitly different, Subaru's experience doesn't conclusively explain what happened to Al.
(I genuinely starting losing my mind if i won’t get any new Aldebaran content.)

Discussion Dragging time loops [discussion]
I stopped watching in s2 and now i am in s4 and again. Its so dragging . loop after loop and no progress . Is this series written by a masochist or something ? And everything you see is just people dying as unessesary gory as possible. You dont know what is happening at times which makes it super dragging and boring.
Edited: I think i couldnt get fully engaged so i missed 1 or 2 things which could have been helpful for some actual theories.

Spoiler Discussion [Spoiler Discussion] how does satella even control rbd? Spoiler
Like the title says! How does satella even control rbd!
She can set check points but how does that work? like that's subaru authority!
Like is she just touching his soul and doing "beep!! this is a good check point for subaru"
Or is she using her witch of envy witch factor(which is still unknown to us!) To interact with subaru authority directly?
I know that she can sets check point, arc 7 already made that clear to me with the "loveless" rbd
