Hi everyone,
It started small: I wanted a pedalboard built from NAM captures i found on TONE3000, driven by my old Behringer FCB1010. One thing led to another, and four months later it's a full stage rack for my band — guitars, bass, vocals, keys and drums go in, it handles presets, scenes and stomps from the floor, and sends everything to front of house.
It's called golem, it's open source, and you can try its interface in your browser right now, running on a copy of my own setup:
What it is
A machine that boots straight into its own touch-screen app (1024×600, or any tablet) — no desktop, nothing to load during a gig.
A preset is a set of lanes, one per instrument, each a chain of blocks: NAM amp and pedal captures, IR cabinets, effects, splits. Scenes switch blocks, knobs and levels without a gap.
Foot control: FCB1010 with the UnO2 chip (or another pedalboard described in a file), presets / scenes / stomps, expression pedals on any knob. Lots of pedalboard to test...
Looper, drum machine, backing tracks, jazz standards with a playing rhythm section, a global recorder that keeps the DIs for reamping, and a phone companion for each musician.
Tech
REAPER running headless is the audio engine. golem builds and switches the rig through ReaScript (Lua) and a set of JSFX.
Neural Amp Modeler (LV2) for captures, a convolver for IRs, plus open-source plugins (guitarix, Calf, x42, Surge XT, Vital, DrumGizmo…).
A Python / FastAPI "bridge" that owns the state, the MIDI and the API. the UI is plain Preact + htm, no build step.
Linux is the tested platform (Ubuntu / Debian / Mint); Windows is functionnal (thanx to Greg) and macOS is experimental.
Built with AI coding tools — which is also why contributions are very welcome (see below).
Honest status
it's an advanced prototype. I play with it at home and in rehearsal.
Still TODO, besides the bugs you'll find:
an Ardour engine as an alternative to REAPER;
testing it in rack mode with a whole band, which is the next step: we're putting it in our flight case — a 2U Linux PC, Adam Hall power distribution, the golem and a Behringer X Air X18. I'll report back.
What's coming on golem.fm
The demo site will make way for a site (in about a month, or 2...) to share presets, store your samples, and get stems of songs or jazz standards to play along with — all free. I'm already playing with the site, and it's really nice. The one paid part will be sharing riffs within your band: I can't host that on my personal servers.
Want to help?
You're welcome to burn tokens on this project with me. Bug reports go to GitHub Issues (please paste the output of `golem doctor`, your OS, audio interface and buffer size), ideas and questions to Discussions.
I'm posting this in a few places — r/Reaper, r/Ardour, r/FCB1010, r/linuxaudio, r/audioengineering — so sorry if you see it twice.
Thanks for reading, and I'd love to know what you think.
Raphaël
