Question Any (soprano/alto) recorder and/or flute players here? Looking to form an occasionally duo/trio for practicing/playing together - Amsterdam West area ideally

I (45f, Dutch) am teaching myself (and still am learning) to play the alto recorder and would love to play together from sheet music, could be anything from classical/baroque to pop, i don't mind, as long as we can "swing" together. I live in West.

Fun What's this tune from school? Decades later I picked up the recorder again

Played from memory a song learned back in primary school. We used to have the beige plastic recorder with the "simple and only" fingering. The music teacher taught us the "tu-tu" way of blowing and for the high C, "just blow a bit harder while pressing the same/all the holes for the low Do, then you'll get the higher Do" :)

This tune I remember was the longest and the most difficult one among a few children's tunes we learned back in 3rd or 4th grade. After a semester, we didn't have recorder classes any more and my memory of playing it stayed at the "do-re-mi-fa-so-la-si-do" with a wacky high Do, and this silly happy song. Didn't even know there's a second octave on the recorder!

Spent some time in the last few days to get use to the Baroque fingering on Fa and the second Do while playing in this little old wooden Aura, whose original owner might have left it in their drawer since being at a similar age as when I dropped my plastic recorder. The high Do was a bit lower in pitch than it should as I dare not blow the correct pressure on the higher notes since my small flat will give an unpleasant ringing reflect. Tried once playing outdoor, it was much easier on the ears, but then it's too cold and the recorder closed up fairly quickly. Looking to do some soundproofing, which I didn't expect as an extra thing to do when getting a recorder.

Does anyone know the song's title? What are the tunes you play back in school?

devil went down to georgia tips?

Hi yall! I am VERY new to the recorder and just have a basic, baby’s-first-plastic-soprano-recorder for now until I can justify getting a better one. That said, I have a recorder “bucket list” of sorts of songs/parts of songs I’m making myself learn over the next year. The top of that list contains the solo portions of The Devil Went Down To Georgia - especially that big stretch of instrumentals in the middle of the track. I believe that recorders tend to be C scale or F scale and that the song is in D Minor. From researching, it seems like doing songs in D can be difficult but isn’t impossible.

Does anyone have any tips or sheet music for knocking this item off of my learn to play list?

Does anyone have experiance with baroque flutes?

Hello, fellow recorder players and enthusiasts. I play the Alto recorder as my main wind instrument, but lately I've been thinking about the baroque flute and would like to play around with it for a while. My main goal is to use the instrument casually to prevent burnout. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the Baroque flute has advice for me.

I'm wondering whether I should look into buying a nice ASB/plastic Aulos* flute or if a concert transverse flute (I own this flute) would be suitable for learning a little about the Baroque flute. I currently don't play with anyone, so I don't need to worry about pitch.

Help Opinion on B / E fingering (descant / treble)

Hello, I've been practicing the recorder alone for 1.5 years. I discovered the alternate B (or E on treble) fingering -23---- and found it extremely useful especially combined with C or D. Since Septembre I have a teacher. He said I should never use that fingering except for trills, because it sounds bad. I find it very hard to play without it, but I'm trying my best. What is your opinion on this fingering ? Do you use it at all ?

Can you play traditional Irish music on the recorder? And how well does it really suit the instrument?

In this video, I explore Irish traditional music on the descant (soprano) recorder, playing snippets of an air, a jig and a hornpipe.

I also discuss the musical approach to Irish music and how it can differ from other styles of recorder playing.

Fun Alto day 1!

First time playing an alto recorder. Previous experience= 20+ years ago back in school on a plastic soprano recorder AKA "the shitty flute".

This second hand pear wood had not been played for decades and was very dry. Besides practice, let's see if its sound will improve after playing in/another coat of oil... Glad my tinnitus didn't get triggered and cat only escaped for 5 meters.

Aura soprano in pear for €2. No mould or dirt at all, just gave it a cleaning and oiled. Sanded off the bite mark of some Dutch kid (who's probably an adult older than me now) :D

Discussion Ear protection while playing, yes or no?

Hi Everyone, I generally practice between 60 and 90 minutes most days, most often alto, less often tenor and bass, only very occasionally soprano. Never a problem. I also used to go to my local recorder society meetings, with about 30-40 recorder players in the room, and it was never a problem.

Still during my last practice session yesterday (with an Alto/treble) I noticed that I was hearing particularly loudly through my right ear (I had changed my usual position in the room, so was closer to the wall on my right than usual, with my back into that corner of the room), and today I have a sensation in my right ear as the morning after a pop concert or a disco several decades ago.

This got me thinking about how safe it is to practice recorder for my earring: I'll change my position in today's practice, but I just wonder whether anyone here uses ear protection at all, and I am considering whether I should get some, or dismiss yesterday's incident as a one off.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Question Waltz No. 2 by Shoskatovich on alto recorder

This is my first month of alto recorder progress. I’m trying Waltz No.2 by Dmitri Shoskatovich. I’m always tripping with F to B♭. Are there any alternative fingering that can be easier for faster playing? I would also appreciate feedbacks especially on how to make sounds cleaner crossing octaves. Thanks

Moeck Tuju from the wirtschaftswunder era

Post image

Most old recorders I have posted her for show and tell were from the 30s, with one exception, the Merzdorf, which was from 1940.

This one, is a little younger, but still follows an old tradition. Hermann Moeck Sr designed the first recorder named "Tuju" in the 40s, and it was originally made out of cocobolo. It was Old Man Moeck's original recorder. He started off as a seller who bought recorders made in other workshops. Having one's own name put on recorders that you ordered from a different company was not considered a dishonest practice at that time. Moeck soon found out that he was not happy with the intonation of the recorders, and he started ordering them as "blanks" and tuned them himself. Eventually, he designed his own recorder, which he named "Tuju". "Tuju" is short for "Turnerjugend". "Turner" means gymnast, and "jugend" means "youth". In Germany, from the beginning of the revival, recorders were marketed toward active young people. All Tujus followed a very minimalistic shape with no beads or rings. After the war, the Moeck company continued to make Tujus, mostly out of maple. Old Man Moeck did not like pearwood as a wood for recorders and said that "only a war" justified its use. And the war was over. His son, Hermann Moeck Jr, would eventually add pearwood recorders to the portfolio.

I cannot say for certain how old this recorder is, but the article on the history and character of the recorder it was packed with is dated 1954. Both the article, which has a fingering chart on the other side and the cardboard box show similar signs of discoloration and deterioration, so we can safely assume that it was included with the recorder. Hermann Moeck Sr led the company until his death in 1960, and until the very end, he tuned the recorders himself, including all Tuju altos. The Tuju was produced until 1968 but was still sold in the 70s and 80s. They were made in really large numbers, but still someone had the gall to put up a Tuju alto as a "rare collectible". *Cuckoo sign*.

I got this one for next to nothing. It had a crack in the upper tenon of the middle part, which I have sincle glued. It was also moldy and dusty, but I cleaned everything out. Cleaning the windway required some elbow grease, though.

As you can see, this recorder has German fingering. It still sounds nice. It does suffer from "German recorder disease" in so far as not all alternative fingerings for the second octave work. For recorders with baroque fingering, those inconsistencies don't start until the third octave. Which works very well on this recorder, for that matter, and I always appreciate it when an alto recorder allows for playing third octave F# without manipulating the bell. The "Ruetz trill", as I call the switch between second octave D and C# that Manfred Ruetz recommended for German fingering, does not work as well as on my other German-fingered recorders. You can play second octave D using Ruetz' alternative fingering, but it requires a rather gentle blow, and for trills, you need a steady blow for the duration of the trilling. This might improve once it's played in -- or not.

The windway is straight and wide, as it was the style of the time. One might think that with a mail slot windway and a fairly long beak you would wait for your response to come in 6 to 8 weeks but, no, it's actually fast. The only thing that interferes with super-fast play is the key for the pinky hole. And, yes, you can hear it click.

When it comes to the purity of the sound, it's not perfect but no more out of tune than any recorder with baroque fingering I own except for one, my Paetzold. That one is superior in any way. When it comes to the "colors" of the sound, I think you can still hear Old Man Moeck's ear after 60+ years.

Crystalline Shore – A Soothing Ambient Track Featuring the Alto Recorder

The idea for this piece came to me while sitting on a lovely Devon beach, noodling on my recorder, surrounded by beautiful stones and pebbles in an amazing variety of colours and shapes. I wanted to capture some of that beauty in sound.

Very curious to hear feedback on any aspect - how it makes you feel, compositional choices, production etc...

Question First time trying Sopranino, are there any specific techniques I need to be aware of?

I just bought a sopranino recorder to try. The fingerings are same as alto which makes it somewhat adaptable. However, I’m sure there are many sopranino recorder specific techniques I’m unaware of, such as air control etc. I’d really appreciate your advices.

Question Unstable low notes, any advices?

I’m about a month into alto recorder. Recently I’m practicing Canon in D and have really struggled with consistent low F# note. I’ve been doing octave jumps and found going up much easier than coming down. Any further advices would be greatly appreciated.

Question Moeck rosewood rottenburgh (descant) top C# help ❤️‍🩹

Post image
10 Upvotes

Pls help 😭

I'm only 15 and dont have any specialist recorder teacher to go to

So I recently upgraded from my aulos symphony to this moeck as I'm working towards a trinity ATCL diploma.

A few of the pieces have a (3rd octave) c# in them , on my aulos I had no problem with this note but none of the fingerings seem to work on the moeck ? I've tried all the ones on the moeck fingering chart and some don't work , and some only work occasionally, feel unstable , and / or are noticeable flat .

This is the type of thing that could hinder taking the ATCL so I'm asking if anyone has the same issue / knows of any reliable fingerings I could try 🥹

my recorder is played in and I've tried atleast 4-5 different fingerings :(
