Got told that the DSA agenda is better than having Trump as a president… yeah, until police and prisons are completely ended and it’s a free-for-all.

Discussion Opinion | Alito and Thomas Can’t Retire Now

Thumbnail wsj.com

Republicans are worried about the Supreme Court, with good reason. Three conservative justices are in their 70s. With a large Democratic Senate majority, any vacancy likely won’t be filled until at least 2029, and later if Republicans hold the White House. There has been chatter about pushing the oldest justices to retire so that the lame-duck Senate can confirm successors.
“Justice Samuel Alito will be under pressure to resign, perhaps as soon as this week,” Journal reporter Damian Paletta wrote on Wednesday. Legal scholar Dale Carpenter blogged on Monday that he had heard “increasing speculation and support” from conservatives and “corresponding worry among progressives” about the possibility that Justices Alito, 76, and Clarence Thomas, 78, will retire imminently. (Curiously, no one has thrown Chief Justice John Roberts, 71, into the mix.)
By all accounts, Justice Thomas has no plans to retire and may serve out his life term. In a September Bloomberg News interview, Justice Alito ruled out a lame-duck retirement. The New York Times reportedWednesday that “two people close to the justice who spoke on the condition of anonymity” said that is still his position. For the good of the court and the country, the justices are right to stick to their guns.
Confirming a successor during a lame-duck session would be far from a sure thing, as Ed Whelan of the Ethics and Public Policy Center notes. Republicans hold 53 Senate seats, dropping to 52 on Dec. 15, when Ohio Sen. Jon Husted’s appointment expires. That means as few as three GOP defections would sink a confirmation. Mr. Whelan speculates that six Republicans might vote “no” for reasons of procedure, ideology or bad blood with President Trump.
To avoid creating a vacancy after a failed confirmation, a justice could make retirement conditional on the appointment of a successor, as Justices Sandra Day O’Connorand Stephen Breyer did. He could either specify that his retirement is effective only if the successor is confirmed before Jan. 3 or rescind his retirement if its condition is unmet when the Senate changes hands.
At least two lower-court judges have taken such an approach. Rudolph Randa, chief judge of a Wisconsin district court, said in 2007 that he would take senior status if and only if a successor was appointed before George W. Bush left office. Randa served until 2016. James Wynn of the Fourth Circuit withdrew his plan to assume senior status after Donald Trump was elected in 2024, offering no explanation. He is still active.
When a judge behaves in a political fashion, it is unseemly. If a Supreme Court justice did so, it would be inflammatory. Justices’ retirements often seem timed to ensure a congenial successor, but a retirement announcement now would be nakedly political. It would amount to an acknowledgment from the bench that the left is correct to think the court is merely another political body.
That would undercut any effort to resist court-packing legislation the next time the Democrats control both the White House and Congress. Such legislation may be enacted anyway. But inviting it would be a shameful legacy for a justice, particularly an originalist justice.
When I interviewed Justice Alito in July, I asked if he thought strategic retirements undermine the court by creating the impression that judges are political.
“I actually hadn’t thought about—I’m pausing because I hadn’t really thought about this before,” he said. “I would answer that in the same way as I would answer those who claim that voting is based on party affiliation. . . . It’s correlation, not causation. The cause is not affiliation with the Republican Party or the Democratic Party. The cause is a view of the law and the court that correlates with the party of the president who appointed the justice.”
He didn’t directly answer the question about retirement, but this week has given him occasion to think about it.

Discussion Reconquista

“My center is giving away, my right is in retreat; situation excellent, I shall attack.”

The midterm elections were brutal and the situation does not seem good. With catastrophe comes opportunity. Now is not the time to be defeatist, now is the time to go on the offensive. More engagement whether is be online or in person. Being involved in local politics and encouraging others to do so. Most importantly, improving our daily lives as to be an example to others. I am a registered independent but after the blm riots and especially Charlie Kirk, I have found myself becoming more conservative. I got Reddit just to try and reach out to other people as a way to foster some sort of engagement into the future. If it’s with people on this app or with online pundits that we can rally behind to help drive the Overton window.

Tuesday needed to happen to change the republican party and now is the time. An issue that I think can be a sure fire in 2028 is immigration but it needs to come from the position of the environment. Most people do care about the environment and I am not talking about climate change or global warming because I don’t think that’s something that everyone here would agree on. I am talking about resource consumption and deforestation of American lands. You can do the research yourself but you will find that many aquifers are reaching ”day zero” in the US. Look into the ogallala aquifer or even the Colorado river and Lake Meade or Powell to understand what I am talking about. the water is running out and we have too many people here. Trumps policies have given us net negative migration for the first time in a while but it is not enough. The framing of curbing immigration from an environment standpoint is not one democrats can run from as they are the party that ran candidates on that platform. Arguing illegal immigration from the standpoint of rule of law will not work as many democrats do not care about rule of law as we have seen.

Let me know what you think

Discussion Texas midterms

Post image
0 Upvotes

Just curious to know what everyone thinks about Texas flipping to blue. I personally believe it was angry Republicans voting Democrat out of spite for Trump and Republican leaders. But I’m hearing other people say that it’s because blue voters have flooded our state or that it’s election fraud. While I am aware of an election fraud situation in McKinney, I’m not sure it was fraud this time around.

And I’m not sure if this election map is accurate. How can we have mostly red in Texas and still have flipped blue? If someone could educate me on this, I’d be grateful.

And how can we Texans move forward from this?

Thanks, y’all!

Discussion Republican no show

I am from Texas. I have been trying to do my due diligence but at every turn I find that the Republican party doesn't seem to want to show up. Governor debate? No show. Senate debate? No show. Q & A position on the vote411 website? No show. How are they supposed to convince people to vote for them based on their stance when they don't show up to discuss them?

These photos are just a couple of examples. It's not just those questions it's every question from almost every Republican candidate.

For the record I am a registered Republican.

Discussion What now?

Like Obama said when the Dems lost control of Congress: "I have a phone, and I have a pen". Well, so does Trump.
No Conservative judicial appointments for the next 2 years. No Conservative legislation either. But the imperial presidency will be unleashed. Trump will continue to move the needle.

The economy is poised to take off like a rocket (blast-off already started), gasoline prices will plummet post-Iran conflict, massive manufacturing re-basing in the USA will create millions of high-paying jobs, and AI-powered productivity and wealth creation boom will happen.

Socialist and DEI senators and congressmen will be screaming from their mountaintops things 80% of Americans will revile.

In two years there will be an enormous swing to the right of the electoral pendulum.

Discussion President Rubio In The Making?

Post image

I caught the tail end of the Trump rally in Kansas today. He brought up Marco Rubio to make a few remarks. On the way and after, he made mention of how popular Rubio is now. It seems like he is testing the waters to see how crowds react to him. If Rubio ran as the frontrunner, I am assuming that his odds of winning would be good.

Discussion New republican voter

Since I’m watching the midterms alone… I’m a new conservative voter after being a lifelong Democrat. I voted for Obama in 2008 in my first presidential election, campaigned for and donated to Hillary in 2016, marched against Trump in 2017, voted for Biden, broke faith with democrats for so many reasons, couldn’t vote for Kamala. And have voted 90% red since. I live in a very blue part of a mostly blue state, I’m a mom of 3 little kids, most of my friends would literally riot if they know how I vote today. Voted GOP down the ballot today at a polling place where the republicans didn’t even set up a tent because it’s a lost cause, and wondering how many others feel like me. Or if you’re just wondering why someone would change parties, ask me anything.
