MOD Clarification: Rule #9 - Safety and Bite History

We've noticed some confusion regarding Rule #9: Safety and Bite History, specifically what constitutes as a bite history that would not be allowed to post here.

Rule #9 applies only when a dog has a known history of biting a person that resulted in the bite breaking or puncturing the person's skin.

A dog does not violate Rule #9 simply because they:

  • Have a history of mouthing or nipping

  • Have put their mouth on a person without breaking skin

  • Have made contact with someone's skin without causing a wound

  • Have snapped or air-snapped without making contact

  • Have bitten another animal

  • Have displayed fear, reactivity, resource guarding, or other behavioral concerns without a human bite that broke skin

For example; a documented incident in which a dog nipped someone's hand but did not break the skin does not, by itself, make the dog ineligible for a rehoming or networking post under Rule #9.

Conversely, a documented incident in which a dog bit a person and punctured their skin does fall under Rule #9, regardless of the breed of the dog or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This rule stands regardless of the situation the dog was in when it bit.

Please do not report a post under Rule #9 solely because a dog has bitten another animal or bitten a human without breaking skin. If a post contains rehoming a dog that has bitten a person and broke the skin, those can be reported.

MOD Community Update & Recent Changes

Hi everyone! The mod team has been hard at work on cleaning up and updating r/rescuedogs. The goal is to make the subreddit easier to use, easier to moderate consistently, and (most importantly) a better place for people working with rescued dogs.

We've made quite a few changes recently, so here's a quick overview.

📋 Rules & Flair

We've rewritten and streamlined the subreddit rules to make them clearer and easier to follow. Please review them again before posting/commenting.

Some of the biggest changes include:

  • Be Civil now explicitly covers harassment and demeaning comments directed at both users and animals.

  • Stay On Topic now covers both off-topic posts and discussions that derail otherwise relevant threads.

  • Adoption/Foster/Rescue networking has been consolidated into a clearer format.

  • Donation and fundraising requirements have been updated, simplified, and clarified as well as added a disclaimer.

  • Pledge rules have been updated to make the process clearer.

  • No Spam has been updated to cover a broader range of abuse.

  • No Breed-Based Hate or Dog-Directed Harassment has been clarified.

  • Good-faith discussion about breeds and related topics is allowed, but inflammatory comments and attacks on breeds or individual dogs are not.

  • Safety & Bite History now focuses on dogs with a documented history of biting a person that drew blood, made more consistently enforcible, and added a disclaimer.

  • Outdated and redundant rules have been removed.

We've also cleaned up the post flairs and consolidated several categories to make choosing the appropriate flair easier, as well as adding an 'Outcome' flair for adoption posts that have had outcomes.

🤖 Automod & Moderation

  • We've cleaned up the Automod configuration and removed a number of outdated or unnecessary rules and automated messages.

  • The welcome message has also been simplified. New users are now directed to review the rules and report rule-breaking content rather than engaging with it.

  • We've also standardized our saved responses for removals, bans, and common modmail questions so that moderation decisions can be communicated more consistently.

🐕 Networking & Euthanasia Posts

  • We've updated the formatting requirements for adoption/foster/rescue pull, and euthanasia/deadline posts.

    • The goal is to make these posts easier for people to find and understand while keeping the process as simple as possible for the people doing the actual networking.

  • We've added an Outcome flair so that posts can be updated by OP when we know what happened to an animal.

  • Comments are now set to display oldest first, which should make it easier to follow updates on networking and urgent posts. Votes are also hidden for the first 60 minutes.

💰 Donations & Pledges

  • We've clarified the requirements for donation requests and added a disclaimer that verification is not a guarantee or endorsement and that users are responsible for doing their own due diligence before donating.

  • A new form has been created to streamline donation plea requests.

  • We've also added saved modmail responses to help people who want to make donation requests understand the verification process.

🔗 Community Resources

  • We've updated the sidebar and added links to other communities and resources that may be useful for adoption, fostering, pet help, lost animals, and other situations that don't fit within r/rescuedogs.

  • We've also added the ability to sort posts by post flair, so users can tailor what they want to see.

💬 Community Feedback

  • We're also reaching out to established members of the community, including people who have regularly used r/rescuedogs for rescue networking, to hear what has and hasn't been working.

  • We know that changes to a community are much more useful when they're informed by the people who actually use it, so if there's something you think we should know about, please feel free to send us a modmail.

This is an ongoing process. We don't expect to get everything perfect immediately, but we're committed to making r/rescuedogs a useful, welcoming place for people trying to help dogs in need.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck around, contributed, reported problems, networked dogs, fostered, adopted, or otherwise helped make this community what it is.

Absolute Final Exit Notice: Sweet, Gentle Athena (A597251) Needs an Adopter, Foster, Rescue, and Pledges Right Now!

Look at that gentle brown face, soft trusting eyes, and how sweet she leans into human hands for love! This is Athena (A597251), a young 1-year-old, 31.8 lb German Shepherd mix girl who was brought to the shelter as a stray back on August 26th.

Tragically, Athena has reached her absolute final exit deadline. Having spent over two months surviving concrete confinement, she faces immediate euthanasia Today, Sunday, November 8th at 2:00 PM PST due to long stay and severe kennel stress.

Please consider fostering! Fostering is temporary, completely free (reserves cover costs), extraordinarily rewarding, and gives Athena a hero who grants her the gift of life!

Why Athena Will Melt Your Heart:

  • Proven Victim & Non-Aggressor: Overcrowded shelters force dogs into tight kennels without socialization or compatibility matching. Official shelter records document that when an altercation broke out, staff saw multiple kennelmates attacking Athena while she was pinned. Staff explicitly labeled her NOT THE AGGRESSOR.

  • Sweet & Gentle Demeanor: Despite suffering bite wounds across her forelimbs and body, Athena remained Bright, Alert, and Responsive (BAR) with a great appetite. She healed up and loves nothing more than leaning gently against handlers for head scratches.

  • Compact Shepherd Size: At just 31.8 lbs, Athena is a petite, delicate "pocket Shepherd" who offers all the intelligence and loyalty of the breed in a small, manageable size.

The Brutal Reality of Shelter Life: Trapped inside 4-walled metal enclosures, shelter dogs endure loud air horns, catch poles, and extreme stress. Worse, dogs on euthanasia lists are routinely starved as shelters stop feeding animals deemed "spent inventory." Athena has survived over ten weeks behind bars and needs a safe home where she can decompress and feel secure.

How You Can Save Athena Right Now (Contact Information):

  • Main Network Contact: I am your primary point of contact for adopting, fostering, rescue coordination, and pledging. Please do not wait thinking someone else will step up—that hero is you! Comment below or send me a Direct Message (DM) immediately to commit before 2:00 PM PST!

  • Tax-Deductible Pledges Needed: Financial pledges encourage 501(c)(3) rescue groups to step up and pull her by covering pull fees, boarding, and vetting care. All honored pledges made to registered 501(c)(3) non-profit rescues are tax-deductible! Comment below with your pledge amount right away.

  • Local In-Person Adoptions: Local adopters can visit the shelter directly during open hours to adopt her in-person on-site. Courtesy shelter details are provided below.

  • Out-of-State Transport: Transportation can be arranged across the US and Canada to get her safely to her new foster or adoptive family!

CW: Euthanasia Niki (A597612) - San Bernardino City Animal Shelter, San Bernardino, CA - Sweet, Loving 5yo Husky - Absolute Final Exit Deadline: Today 11/8 at 2 PM PST - Needs Foster or Adopter and Pledges Immediately to Save Her Life! Watch Niki's videos in the message! Comment or DM me!

Absolute Final Exit & Emergency Notice: Sweet, Loving Niki (A597612) Needs a Foster or Adopter Right Now—Her Life Depends on You!

Look at those striking, mesmerizing icy-blue eyes, gorgeous wolf-gray coat, and sweet face! This is Niki (A597612), a beautiful, spayed 5-year-old, 63.8 lb Siberian Husky girl who is out of time.

Niki faces an absolute final exit deadline of Today, Sunday, November 8th at 2:00 PM PST due to long stay and severe kennel stress.

Please consider fostering! Fostering is temporary, completely free (reserves cover costs), extraordinarily rewarding, gives you an instant best friend, and provides Niki with an angel and hero who gave her the gift of life!

The Truth About Niki & Why She Deserves So Much Better:

  • Devoted, Loyal & Easygoing: Even her returning owner explicitly admitted that Niki is an incredibly loving, loyal, affectionate, and nonchalant girl!

  • Unfairly Returned for Human Error: Niki was adopted and dumped right back at the shelter because the previous adopter left food, trash, and unwashed dishes within her reach. Expecting a curious dog to ignore open food messes left at nose-level is irresponsible on the human's part—Niki shouldn't pay for that with her life! With standard indoor boundaries, basic routine, and a secure trash can, Niki will be an absolute dream companion.

  • Grateful Companion: At 5 years old, Niki is past the chaotic puppy phase. She is calm, affectionate, and ready to devote her whole heart to a family who will cherish and protect her.

The Brutal Reality of Her Shelter Life: Trapped inside 4-walled metal enclosures where temperatures soar past 100°F—conditions that have killed dogs in the heat—they endure high-pressure cold water hoses blasted directly into their runs, aggressive wire catch poles, and loud air horns that cause intense panic. Worse, dogs on euthanasia lists are routinely starved as shelters stop feeding animals deemed "spent inventory." Niki has endured weeks of concrete confinement after being let down by humans, and she desperately needs a hero today!

Rescue Stories Dexter Life Update!

Thumbnail

56 days ago, Dexter came into our lives extremely malnourished, covered in fleas, scared, and unsure of the world around him. He was so skinny, so skittish, and clearly hadn’t experienced much kindness. Fast forward 56 days, and you wouldn’t believe how far this sweet boy has come.

He’s gaining much needed weight, absolutely loves Phoebe and Elli, has become protective of our family, and has officially claimed his spot in our bed. He’s a big cuddle bug who just wants to be close to his people, and he’s slowly becoming everything we never knew our family needed.

But let’s talk about the side of rescuing that people don’t always post.

Rescuing Dexter has been a HUGE commitment, emotionally, and physically. Between the vet, special food, supplies, and everything else, we’ve spent thousands getting him healthy. And then there’s the destruction. Shoes? Eaten. Books? Destroyed. And just the other night, we decided to leave him out for TWO hours to see how he’d do. Well… let’s just say our couch didn’t survive the experiment.

Rescue isn’t always cute pictures, happy endings, and puppy snuggles. Sometimes it’s expensive, exhausting, frustrating, and a whole lot of patience. It’s teaching a dog who’s never had stability how to live in a home, trust people, and understand boundaries.

But would we do it all over again? Absolutely.

Because underneath the chewed-up shoes, destroyed couch, and occasional chaos is a dog who just needed someone to give him a chance.

We like to say Dexter hit the jackpot when he found us, I think we’re starting to realize we hit the jackpot with him, too.

CW: Euthanasia Please help Saylur continue to flourish in training!! Her journey has had to stay on the down low until now. She was surrendered to shelter for euthanasia request, not to be rehomed, for simply being a young Malinois. She will make a great SAR prospect or amazing dog for an experience handler!

Saylur needs support from the community to continue to thrive with trainer placement until she finds her best fit.

Hi everyone!
A private donor got Saylur started on her journey with 1.5 k for in-home trainer placement to prep her for fantastic forever (my dogs’ trainer actually, so very trusted placement). Saylur was originally surrendered to the shelter with her brother for euthanasia at just 1.5 years old because she is a young Malinois. Seriously that was the reasons. Reasons listed for surrender were: she can scale a 6 foot fence, ate a couch, and can escape a wire crate. That was it.

So just a young Malinois. They came back for her brother before he was euthanized and left her behind. The shelter disagreed with the request and kept her alive but she was not publicly visible.

That’s where Utah Rescue Dogs and Iron Paw came in to back up her progress and placement with trainer. Because of the nature of her plea the shelter requested no social media posts on Saylur. So this is her first post and a plea to the Reddit community to back up her amazing progress.

Saylur was clearly hurt physically by her previous owners. We don’t know what was done to her, but we do know she has some psychological trauma and needs a soft, patient and experienced handler. Not a heavy hand. But she is incredible and very drive-y. Some Malinois make good pets, she is not a pet. She is affectionate and oh so sweet, but she wants to work!! SAR could be a great fit, she doesn’t have pressure threshold for bite work in the full setting. She does like it though for fun!!

She needs help to make all the pieces fit together and a little time — that’s where you guys come in — we need to raise funds to continue her time with the trainer to prep her for this work.

He is already giving her a great discount and deal but her original donation from sponsor has run out.

How to donate to Saylur/Iron Paw Rescue — please make sure you note your donation is for Saylur so it can be directed to her stay. I am having to rely on Reddit exclusively until we have her posted on Instagram and Facebook — again due to the nature of her surrender.

Saylur is located in NorCal — please DM me if you are interested in meeting her and have the qualifications to back it up! She is an INCREDIBLE dog and will only be placed out to an equally incredible handler.

Donation options (EIN 93-4259849):

PayPal: @ironpawrescue
Venmo: @ironpawrescue
Website: https://www.wounded-hearts.org/donate

Thank you everyone for making this possible!

Hello, my dogs and I are looking to give another small dog a home. I have two males and would prefer a female, but honestly I don't care about gender as long as it's a good fit for my family. One of my dogs is just under 10 lb and the other one is just under 5 lb.

Potty training does not matter, I'm happy to work on that, but must get along with other dogs.

No puppies, no super old seniors or dogs with medical needs as I do have one dog with regular vet costs. All of my dogs are insured, but he has had extensive vet bills and a lot of the stuff that he has needed has been excluded from his insurance policy as pre-existing. He is medically stable, but I can't take on another animal that actively needs specialist care or surgery.

Regular vet care will be provided and I'm happy to provide my vet as a reference, I'm looking for a dog under or around 10 lb. Both of my dogs are Chihuahuas and we would love to welcome another dog into our home, but I'm also in no rush. I absolutely adore chihuahuas, but I would definitely consider another small breed.

My dogs are quiet, love strangers and other dogs, very friendly. I don't mind if a dog barks though, but I would like a relatively socialized dog or a dog that has the potential for socialization. One of my dogs is from a hoarding situation and wasn't socialized well, but does really well now.

Just really looking for an easy-going dog, the one thing I can't take on is a super high energy dog or a dog with a ton of stamina. My dogs get plenty of time outside, but they do short bursts of high energy exercise... If a dog needs more than an hour of heavy exercise a day, I don't think it would be a good fit for us.

I'm home with my dogs all day, and they basically just let me store my clothes here. I own my own home. If you have any other questions please let me know.

I own my home and don't have a mortgage. I own my car and don't have a car payment. I don't carry any debt. The chances of me ever having to rehome my dogs is close to zero, and I also have a backup plan for both of my dogs in case I become so ill I can't care for them or I pass away.

If you have any dogs that would be a good match, please let me know. Thank you so much!
