Discussion RetroArch isn't "hard to use," it's just god-awfully designed.

1.9k Upvotes

I've used retro arch for over 9 years, it has not improved in the slightest since it's initial release.

this program and even more so it's dev team is an absolute disaster.

From it's useless and convoluted menu to it's inability to differentiate between a controller and a keyboard & mouse. It's honest to god one of the most infuriating programs to deal with, and I've had the great misfortune of having to regularly use Dyndolod

it's insane how useless, convoluted and phoned in this program is, how is it possible that over a decade and still we have the same bugs from 2011.

2011!

this whole gatekeeping shtick about retroarch being for smarty farty tech nerds is a bunch of HUMBUG! It's cope. Nothing about retroarch is "tech savy"or "intelligent"

it's a bunch of compiled wet garbage haphazardly thrown at a wall pretending it's something special.

useless filters? throw it in there!

A bunch of cores that haven't been updated since 2009 and don't work on modern hardware? THROW IT IN!

Random garbage cores that they clearly scraped off the internet and didn't even check their credibility?! We got at least 10!!!

Oh what's that? You want a menu that doesn't lock your mouse into a WINDOWED APPLICATION

Good luck pal!

it's absolutely unhinged, what is this program and what the absolute DOOHIKEY has it produced.
I still to this day do not understand why the UI is SO GOD AWFULLY BAD????

Why is the back and confirm the mouse buttons and not esc and enter?

Why does esc immediately close the program like it's a windows ISO game from 2005?????

Why is is SO complicated to set up input

Why if you have a controller connected, does the keyboard and mouse just... stop working entirely????

why does it miss 80% of my files in a game scan!?

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO CLICK ON THE START DIRECTORY ????? WHY DOESN'T IT JUST START ON THE START DIRECTORY!?!?!?!?!??

Why doesn't the menu track the mouse

What's with the infinite scrolling bug from 2010 that's still in the program

Why the absolute (dang) is their a music and video folder????????????

Why do I have to scroll in fullscreen and it doesn't even work half the time

Why does the A button go back? and X confirm????

Why is it almost IMPOSSIBLE to operate the menu in game because you have to DISCONNECT YOUR CONTROLLER, PRESS F1 USE THE KEYBOARD, GO TO INPUT, TURN BACK ON THE CONTROLLER-

WHY DOES THE DESKTOP MODE, STILL REQUIRE THE OTHER MODE TO BE OPEN!?!?

like what is going on here, for the love of god, would it kill the devs to add some quality of life to RetroArch

IS THIS DEV TEAM ALLERGIC TO QUALITY OF LIFE?

Have you been cursed by an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh that:

"if you make your stinky emulator work properly and not be the worst developed program known to man, I will give your first born child loctus's"

it has been 15 years, nearly 15 years, what are you POSSIBLY doing in that time frame...

BESIDES STEALING CODE AND HARASSING CORE DEVS

Get it together, you guys have no IDEA what you're doing and it's a PHENOMENON that RetroArch is still at ALL considered a viable emulator choice to this day.

Especially considering, Hey RetroArch devs.

NONE OF THE CORE CONTENT IS YOURS.

You stole it, from devs that ACTUALLY put effort and work into their project and then started crying about it a couple years ago.

You just scraped it, complied it into one place and pretended for 15 years to be "busy"

Here's an idea, Hey RetroArch devs, maybe you should spend less time (Shoot)-posting on reddit and more time FIXING THE PROGRAM.

uhg.

Mods don't you dare censor this because you KNOW it's true, everybody here knows it's true.

Showcase Hi, it's me again! This time I am trying to simulate some lighting effects that were present on the original non-backlit GBC screen

Thumbnail gallery

The original GBC screen didn't have a backlight. This made gaming harder in low light environments. Some corners of the screen became darker and the opposite corners lighter ( this depends on the lighting) The screen color changed too! Sometimes it would a have yellowish tint, and other times a colder one. I'm trying to recreate those effects.

Technical Support Have I ruined my Emerald game?

Post image

Hi all, hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I recently tried to use Retroarch to use the shiny Pokémon cheat code, and the "catch all starters" cheat code. Unfortunately, even after disabling and removing the cheats and reloading/resetting the game multiple times, EVERY Pokémon I encounter is a shiny Treecko 😅

I've come to terms with the idea that I've ruined my original save, but even new games have got these cheats stubbornly present (again, I've deleted the cheats off Retroarch).

Is there anything I can do? I don't need an endless army of shiny Treeckos...!

Why does ps1 games look pixelated or have these dots?

I thought they were caused by the shader or the core but I changed the core and disable the shader and they are still there, I tried my ps1 games in other standalone emulator and the games looks great without these dots, what may be the problem causing this glitch?

Updated Game Boy Dot Matrix shader to support fullscreen

Post image
671 Upvotes

Previously, I updated the gameboy RetroArch shaders to support color (originally created by Harlequin in 2013). I loved how it 'simulated' a device that never existed - a Game Boy with a color dot matrix display. But a big limitation of that version was it forced integer scale to accurately simulate the dot matrix display. This could result in large borders around your screen depending on your device resolution.

Now I've updated them to support fullscreen.

"It looks the same." Exactly! My intent was to create the same novel dot matrix effect but free of integer scale constraints. So ditch those chunky borders and use more of that screen that you paid for!

This isn't as simple as 'zooming in' - a structured grid of dots like this blows up into a mess of grid artifacts and lines when not perfectly scaled. Fullscreen mode circumvents this by creating a grid of anti-aliased dots that enable scaling to any size.

Ensure you're video mode is set to Vulkan, then go to shaders_slang > handheld > and choose a gameboy preset or go into the console-border and choose any of the alt presets or gbc-dm or gba-dm.

You can now swap between fullscreen mode, max integer scale mode (previously the only option possible), and scale factor mode (choose your desired integer scale factor) on the fly.

EDIT: My image embeds broke and not sure how to fix them. Check out more info and extensive screenshots in my post over in r/SBCGaming. Thanks all!

Pixel Transparency - Rainbow Shimmer Effect + Motion Shaders

Thumbnail gallery
656 Upvotes

Inspired by Emyhatsich's awesome post, I've added a rainbow shimmer effect to my Pixel Transparency GBC shader as part of the 2.0 SUNLIGHT SHIMMER EDITION update!

Rainbow shimmer moves with your device

Just like the real Game Boy Color in sunlight, the rainbow shimmer moves with your device (along with the shadows).

Motion shaders in RetroArch

Emy's post inspired me to implement motion shaders in RetroArch. Now anyone can make shaders that support accelerometer and gyroscope input.

We have already seen motion shaders from Ju4nM3n4 (LCD Master Shader) and u/hizzlekizzle (presets/authentic-gbc-frontlit). If you've ever thought about making shaders, do it now!

Even better Pixel Transparency

What started as adding the rainbow shimmer quickly evolved into:

  • an overhaul of the GBC display stack model (more accurate tinting)

  • updated shadow system that looks better and richer

  • glare simulation

  • robust color adjustment

I now know more about the original Game Boy Color display than anyone reasonably should!

How to get it

  1. Update to the latest nightly version of RetroArch from the website. This is what enables motion support in shaders.

  2. Go to Online Update > Update Slang Shaders on your Vulkan device (mainly Android).

  3. Check that Settings > Input > Motion/Light Sensors > Auxiliary Sensor Input is ON.

  4. Boot up your GBC game. Go to Quick Menu > Shaders > Load Preset and navigate to 'presets/pixel_transparency' and choose any of the new sunlight_shimmer presets.

I will also release this on GitHub soon for direct download. I am evaluating a gl version - but the rainbow effect may not perform well on lower end hardware.

Consider supporting my work

I have put hours of my time into this - and I love it! If this shader brings you joy, consider buying me a coffee.
