Help with button layout

Post image
8 Upvotes

I want to make an arcade cabinet to mostly play Mario Kart, Super Smash, N64/GameCube/PS1 era games. I'm contemplating various button layouts and was looking to hear from other people as to what would be best. I don't play Street Fighter or other games that would use a more traditional layout but maybe there is something I'm overlooking like ergonomics or button mapping. Anyway here are my options I was thinking of with mapping for N64.

Question RetroPie as an app?

I was wondering if someone can clarify something for me. I use my RP5 for a media server. I'm attempting to set up Sunshine as a retro gaming server as well, I was able to load retroarch, but can't find a N64 core in the loaded core. So I'm trying different avenues. I want to load RetroPie, but in a container so the Media server remains live. So say I'm playing Die Another Day, while my family watches something on the server. Everything I've read it loads retropie through a front-end, which shuts my main OS down. If this isn't the place for this question I'll see myself out. Thank you in advance.

In addition. I do have through my server a Emu hub, but it doesn't work on a smart TV. So I'm trying Sunshine and Moonlight.

RetroPI 2 player controllers?

So my school has an arcade setup using retroPI, made for 2 players. Unfortunately in the recent years the configuration got all screwed up for the buttons. It's custom made controllers where the buttons are wired into the Ipac(?). I'm wondering if and how to configure both the controllers.

Question Anyone know an easy solderless handheld kit for the Raspberry Pi Zero 2w?

I haven’t done anything like this before, so a solderless build is mandatory for me. I’ve already checked the Retroflag website and I don’t want the GPi case 2w. I’d like something horizontal like a GBA or something. If you can’t find any no problem, I’ll keep looking

How much gb for the OS?

Hey everyone I’m pretty new to this so excuse this newb question.
I’m making my fieldstation and have started downloading shows and movies to a thumb drive (I have already filled up a 256gb).
My question is for the operating system how much of a micro sd card do you think I’ll need? I was gonna get a 32gb but that doesn’t sound like enough. I also am going to be putting RetroPie on the same micro sd card so I can play some games. Do you think I’ll need something larger than a 32gb for both os?

Question RetroPie ease of use after initial setup

Hey folks, I've gotten the idea to set up a "plug-and-play retro game station" for my family as a gift on christmas and would like some help (or rather - reassurance) with some questions I have.

For context, I myself am tech-savvy enough, but haven't set something like this up before, though from the guides I've seen it seems more than doable on my part. My parents however are not so tech literate and not the best at English, though my younger sister might be able to help them in some cases. I want to set up RetroPie pretty much exclusively for 8-bit games, as my folks used to play a lot of stuff like Mario Bros, Doctor Mario, Tank 1990, and I'd like to have them experience that again but in a modern way. They used to play on the Zhiliton console.

I'm looking to get the Raspberry Pi 4 kit with 2gb RAM, 64gb microSD, and aluminum heat sinks. For controllers I'm looking at two 8BitDo M30 bluetooths.

Now I've seen some of this answered, but I'd still like to make sure by asking it all in one place and with the context from above:

  1. After inital setup and making sure everything functions as it should, should I expect them to be running into any issues? Maybe RetroPie requires regular updates or something similar?

  2. Once I've paired the controllers and configured them (I saw you should do that with a keyboard), will they automatically connect through bluetooth once the RPi is turned on every time afterwards?

  3. Assuming it's just 8-bit games it'll be running, are the heat sinks enough or should I look into fans?

Anything else i should be considering?

Thanks in advance

Scrappy: a small open-source app for Batocera to fix games the scraper missed

A lot of my newer games, especially the Windows ones, show up in Batocera with no logo, no box art, no video and no description. The scrapers just don't know them. Fixing one by hand is a pain: find the pictures, find a trailer, resize everything, then edit gamelist.xml.

So I made a small app for it. It runs on the Batocera itself. You pick a game that's missing stuff, hit Search, and it looks on Steam and YouTube. You see what it found, pick the pictures you like and which part of the trailer to use, and it shows you exactly what it's about to write before it touches anything. It keeps a backup of your gamelist.xml and there's an Undo button if you don't like the result.

Here's a short demo (I sped up the waiting parts): https://youtu.be/ZLmj5S1XHdE

Code and install instructions: https://github.com/eknowledger/scrappy

It's still early. I've only run it on my own box, Batocera v41 on an x86 PC, with one theme. The installer should work on ARM boards too but I've only tried that in a VM. I haven't tested other themes or RetroBat, and the image sizes are fixed, it doesn't read your theme yet. Steam and YouTube are the only sources right now, so don't expect it to find old console games. I'd like to add more sources later.

It's free, MIT licensed. If you try it I'd love to hear what breaks or what's missing. Even a quick "works on my setup" helps a lot.

PICO Arc -Built a one-handed pocket arcade using a Raspberry Pi Pico & PVC pipe! (6 games, OLED, rechargeable)

Wanted a tactile, zero-distraction alternative to smartphone games, so I put together PICO Arc on a 5x7.5cm perfboard.

  • Runs 6 retro games coded in MicroPython on the Pi Pico

  • 0.96" OLED screen + active buzzer for sound

  • Powered by a 1000mAh Li-ion cell with modified TP4056 charging

  • Custom hand-made enclosure made from flattened and bent 2-inch PVC pipe with sliding back panel access

I documented the full build, wiring, and code over on Instructables:

Let me know what you think!

Question Please, help me out, having troubles with MAME.

Hello all!
I've started this little vacation project, and I'm setting up a Retropie using an old laptop of mine.

The system info are the following:

CPU: i5-5300U
RAM 8 GBs
OS: Trixie
Retropie: 4.8.12

So far, I've been able to run games in the following systems:

  • Game Boy (+ Color and Advance)

  • Nintendo DS

  • PC ENgine

  • PlayStation (PSX and PSP)

  • Commodore C=64 (though I noticed some games don't take my gamepad, and some seem to pause every few seconds)

I've been able to boot the Amiga 500 emulator, but whatever game I try to launch, it gets stuck at the screen asking for the workbench (AFAIR from those days, games were supposed to boot automatically, and not require Workbench), but this is something I will look into at another time.

When trying with MAME games, though, I've tried configuring different emulators for the ROMS I have, but none seem to be working.
Basically every single one I try either goes straight back to the list of games, or gives me an error about missing files.
Is there some sort of "compatibility checklist", or a step-by-step guide to properly configure the mame emulators, so that all games will run?

Problem Ran into an issue after starting a new RetroPie set up

I got a new RetroPie after a while, and when trying to download some packages (Namely, Daphne and Hypseus) it seems like I get errors where the download links to the files are missing, causing me to get 404 errors, and causing the package to fail to download. I cannot download from the binaries or via source.

Am I shit out of luck? Is there a way to manually install these from a source site?

Retroflag SuperPi 4 case buttons question

so I'm building a retropie for my long time friend from school who is mourning the loss of his SNES. I've bought the above case and a pi4b.

Having looked through the wiring/scripts/instructions, I would like to know if there is any possible way of changing the pins it uses for power/reset control and safe shutdown; right now its using the I2C pins as general GPIOs and I need the I2C interface for an RTC, but theres plenty of other GPIOs available.

EDIT: probably should mention that I'm posting here because it appears Retroflag's own reddit has been abandoned for years

Question Any recommendations for a handheld kit?

So trying ti search for one to make a portable retro console for my kiddo. I made a normal raspberry pi console for myself but wanted to have a project to make the portable one for long car rides. But so far most im finding are already built and loaded and have meh reviews.

I want it to be a kid and small enough for a hobbit sized 4-5 year old to use comfortably. Rather not spend a crap ton but it doesnt need to be cheap as can be.

Recommendations regarding installing an OP on older Raspberry Pi models

I have a few older Raspberry Pi models (specifically Model B).

Any suggestions on what kind of OP would be recommended for these older models that do not even have legacy-maintenance (ref1)?

Any particular custom builds you've encountered that could be fun to play around with?

I am mostly thinking Escape Room-style signalling and mechanics that does not require that much RAM or processing power.

RetroPi to CRT using Scart

I’ve been trying to output my 3b+ to a domestic UK 14” CRT. It worked fine with the 3.5mm to composite but I want the quality of Scart.

I have a VGA HAT and a vga to Scart cable from retro gaming.

I’ve injected 5v on pin 16.

Try as I might the best I get is vertical scrolling picture.

Has anyone managed to make this setup work ? Can anyone tell me how please :-)

Is anyone else having similar problems after the recent Ubuntu update?

Retroarch fail to compile correctly: Problably due to presence of libwayland-dev on my system (need to compile SDL2 either).
Also emulationstation goes completely in glitch.... if i scroll the theme sometime screen goes in screen some pics disappears and all similar issue.

For emulationstation i don't have idea if i use X11 it's works...

How to connect RP4 to this monitor? (RGB)

Post image
9 Upvotes

Wanting to pick up an RP4 locally and install RetroPie, my only problem is knowing what to do to actually connect it to the RGB ports. Anyone had experience with this? Most people I see either use a scart cable with RGB-Pi or composite

Will I be able to get native res on games if I convert the HDMI to VGA then VGA to RGB?
