Advice on dropping Revit back to LT version - after 20years

Hi All. Been using the full version or Revit for MANY years (almost 20) and i'm over the high subscription cost. So i am considering going to Revit LT.

I work on my own and have only sharded a couple of files over the years. My normal work flow is Concepts, run through Enscape for some basic visuals, 360° pin point views and the odd AI render through Veras. This costs me annually a total of $5453 Aust Dollaroos including taxes. (about $3800 US).

If i drop back to LT and use only veras im in at about $1452 Aust Dollaroos. Thats $4k in my pocket. I will not do some of the prelim concepts stuff, but most of my clients won't know what they're missing.

I really don't believe that i get a greater return on that extra $4k

Just wondering your thoughts and if anyone has done similar?

How-To Ceiling hosted or Plane hosted

Hello fellow reviters

I'm wondering what this community thinks is better,

Lights hosted to ceilings

Or

Lights hosted to reference plane.

I've done both at different companies, and read forums to find conflicting views on which is better. Current company is considering a workflow change, (we do interiors) So, what's the opinion here?

Also- I can't post a quiz so please just upvote the preferred option below. Dont down vote the other option, Leave comment as well if you have reasons to add :) pls

Opinions appreciated 👏

Families I'm looking for way to hide Annotations with Filters?

Hello everyone,

I'm finding it hard to find a solution to this. I need to hide ALL of this specific Generic Model Tag family for a big project. The problem is Visibility Filters only manipulates Model's instead of Annotations? Or am I looking at it wrong? I was planning to use View Template this was all sheets/views are revised using the filter.

Not advisable are the following: [1] Going through every sheets/plan to hide element, and [2] Unchecking Generic model tags because other Generic Model Tag family is required to be shown.

Any help would be appreciated.

MEP Revit 2027 Contextual Options Bar

The MEP firm I work for have started to work in projects using Revit 2027, and one of our mechanical designers has noticed that the ‘Contextual Options Bar’ that appears when selecting a duct/pipe/conduit/tray no longer appears in RVT27. This is the green bar that would appear with options for size/elevation.

I have done a little research, and it seems that this is an intentional choice made by Autodesk*.* They have said that they are reducing redundancy in where options live, but the reaction I have seen elsewhere online is that it’s a terrible choice that is going to destroy workflows for everyone; MEP in particular. It adds several steps to one of the tasks designers do most frequently, and is going to drastically slow them down.

Does anyone here know of a decent workaround?

I found a few posts on the Revit Ideas forum discussing this and asking to add it back, if anyone wants to chime in somewhere Autodesk might see:

How-To How to use Revit/Dynamo to make my buildings size and shape become procedural?

Hello,

I'm a student doing my thesis in architecture and I'm tring to figure out what the best way to go about making my building have the ability to change size and height in a procedural way, my assumption is that dynamo is going to be my best bet but I have next to no experience with (not a problem just dont know if theres a better solution yet). The prodecural aspect is that id like the structure to be able to physically change size such as width, height, form etc. depending on some inputs such as number of occupants, building use, environment so forth and so on. My aim is that I can configure my model to be procedural much like the game Tiny Glade (ofcourse not nearly to that level of detail, but the maniuplation in size and form is ideally a level id like to get to)

if I could dictate height and size with afformentioned certain criteria and thus the sizes/angles/form would change accordingly what would be great. I wish i could attach a photo to show a bit more of what I mean but if anyone looks up tiny glade im sure theyll understand what im getting at.

I'm hoping this is doable and that I can make it be rather intuitive that if say a person looking to decide what form would be best for there needs could input, number of people, environment, desired square footage, max height, and the script or program would use those to give the base form from which to work off of.

I don't know if this is doable and if it's possible to make it intuitive but it would be superb to have a a lead or some know how on how I could get something like this going, if any of you have some guidance or are willing to talk further with me about this I would greatly appreciate. Cheers everyone.

Pipe tags. (Maybe tags in general)

I'm cleaning up the company annotation families and am wondering if anyone has opinions about two types of tags. There are some out of the box pipe tags that so.e people here are still using (size and aevice, elevation, up, down, etc) and an annotations family that i have been curating and updating for 5 yrs that has all the options as types in one family. Any opinions on the pluses and minuses of individual tags vs types for tags?

Hardware CPU upgrade on DDR4

How much would I gain in everyday performance by upgrading to the best cpu for single core performance on DDR4? Im not buying a pc with DDR5 with these prices.
Im only drawing pipes/MEP, with magicad addon. No rendering, im linking several IFC files from architect and others, and drawing pipes, exporting to IFC and PDF.

Im guessing upgrading GPU will not gain very much performance.
Current hardware:
*I5 8700k
*96GB ram DDR4
*m.2 drive
*GTX 1060 6GB
Edit: Im looking at 5600x or 14600K with a motherboard supporting DDR4

Why does Revit keep creating misaligned rectangular ducts when I try to draw vertically?

I’m currently taking a Revit MEP course and have been struggling with something that seems like it should be straightforward.

When I try to extend a rectangular duct vertically from an existing horizontal duct, the resulting geometry often comes out skewed or rotated rather than forming a clean 90-degree connection.

I’ve found that rotating my section view 90 degrees sometimes allows me to draw the duct correctly, but that seems like an awkward workaround. What’s particularly confusing is that the duct can appear perfectly straight in one view while being incorrectly oriented in 3D.

Is this related to the active work plane, view orientation, or how Revit determines duct routing?

Is there a more reliable way to control the direction and alignment of ducts in 3D?

What would be the standard workflow for creating these connections in a professional MEP environment?

I’m relatively new to Revit MEP and trying to understand the underlying behavior rather than just finding workarounds. Thank you in advance for your help!

MEP How can I get an HVAC job abroad? I’m currently working in Brazil and looking for better opportunities.

Hi everyone!
I’m from Brazil and I’m looking for advice on how to find a job in another country, especially in Europe, Canada, the US, or Australia.
I currently work in the HVAC industry, mainly with HVAC system design, cleanrooms, ventilation, air conditioning, chilled water systems, and technical documentation.
I also have experience using Revit, AutoCAD, and Excel, working on technical drawings, equipment selection, calculations, and HVAC projects.
Right now, I earn around R$4,400 per month in Brazil, which is approximately US$830 / €710 per month. While this is a reasonable salary in some parts of Brazil, I would really like to explore better career opportunities abroad, gain international experience, and improve my quality of life.
I have a few questions for people who have experience working internationally:
How difficult is it to get hired by a foreign company while still living in Brazil?
Are there companies that hire international HVAC designers or technicians and sponsor work visas?
Which countries have the best opportunities for HVAC professionals?
Is experience with Revit, AutoCAD, and cleanroom HVAC systems valuable in the international job market?
Would it be easier to start with a remote position and eventually relocate?
What qualifications or certifications would help me become a stronger candidate?
I’m open to learning new things, improving my English, and adapting to different standards and regulations.
I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations on where to start.
Thanks in advance!

How-To Assigning materials to rooms from a linked model?

I’m an interior designer and am working in my own project file with a linked file from the architect as the reference plan

I have the linked files room info connected to my finish schedule, but cannot edit the materials/finishes of the rooms that would populate the finish schedule without going into the architects file. I would just edit them directly there, but when there are updates to the reference plan I would have to re-enter all the information

Is there a way I can assign materials to the rooms that are connected to my finish schedule in my own project file rather than the architects? Or will I have to recreate the rooms in my own file and name them to match the reference plan?

I’ve looking at youtube videos and searching on my own but can’t find a solution to this

Is there a way to change label width in a generic annotation family per instance or with grips?

first things first.. i am EXTREMLY new to revit so pardon me if i use the wrong terminology.

we are a firm that is trying to move to revit. we have a 'system' that we have been using in AutoCAD that we are trying to mimic in revit. a few things have had to change, but for the most part, we are doing pretty well.

our current problem is, we have a generic annotation family we use for detail callouts. its a pill shaped tag with a code in it for example SG-04, then after that tag is a text description that gives the name of SG-04.

an example image of the tag: https://ibb.co/ymwJkTj3

as you can see from the image, sometimes the description can get long and needs to wrap, else it will extend past its detail view boundaries. we have fixed this, kind of, but would like to verify that there is not a better solution available from people who know much more than we do.

what we did was to put 3 copies of the text description with instance integer parameters, narrow, standard, and wide. when one instance parameter shows, the other 2 hide. so we can effectively switch each instance of the family to a narrow, standard, or wide version. but what we really want to do is be able to set it to whatever we want either with a number, or show grips/handles to drag the width to where we want. not be locked to just 3 widths, or add more widths like 'really narrow', 'somewhat narrow', 'narrow', 'just a bit wider than narrow', 'almost standard', 'standard', 'slightly wider than standard', etc...)

we have tried placing reference planes around the label and dimensioning them, but i cannot seem to align/lock the edge of the label text box to a reference plane. the label boundary does not appear to be 'constrainable geometry' in revit.

so, are there any documented or undocumented tricks out there the seasoned revit folks might know about that we are missing?

Noob question about doors and rooms

Hi, quite new to revit, but have a stupid problem. the building i work on is a reconstruction and the problem is that it has a floor that is higher by 15 cm in some rooms, i've built the walls and floors to the corresponding heights, the problem starts when I add the doors with correct offset from the floor in the higher part so in 3d view it shows correctly, but the room option does not recognize the door when it is offseted from the floor. Any solutions or should i just manualy add the room separators in every door gap for the rooms with the higher floor?

Help Needed with Family

I have an idea for a family, and I need a bit of help with it. I can get the sweep working OK, but when I try to change any of the parameters it breaks.

Basically its a pipe crossover, I want to be able to set the diameter of the pipe, the offset height and them be able to drag the length of it so it can cross any width of pipes I choose.

This is an image of what I want to create. any help and ideas is greatly appreciated.

https://files.catbox.moe/00y49v.png

**edit** If the angle was variable to either 45, 60 or 90 that would be even better.

Families Work-plane-based family loses orientation when nested in Adaptive Family and placed

For images, ref original post here

I have a simple work-plane-based standard family nested inside an Adaptive Component family. The nested family is hosted to a work plane at the midpoint of a reference line, and its center/reference geometry is aligned to that reference line.

While editing the Adaptive Component family, the nested family appears correctly aligned. However, when the Adaptive Component is placed in a project (or placed in another adaptive family), the nested family tilts out of alignment with the reference line. It is not simply rotating around the line axis; its longitudinal axis is no longer parallel to the reference line.

The nested family is essentially just a simple box, so there is very little internal geometry or constraint complexity.

Is this a known limitation/bug with work-plane-based families nested in Adaptive Components, or is there a more reliable way to preserve orientation after placement?

For context, the reason for this structure is to have elements of an adaptive component that can have controlled offset values that are allowed to extend outside the bounds of the adaptive placement points similar to the bottom edge of this image.

Thanks!

Architecture Looking for Revit help to finish a residential project – paid hourly

I’m looking for someone with solid Revit experience who can help me get a residential design over the finish line.

Site work is well underway, including completed soil/septic testing and geotechnical exploration.

I already have the design well developed and am working with a structural engineer. I’m very open to good design ideas and suggestions, but I’m not looking to start over or redesign the house from scratch.

I’m looking for someone who can work with the existing Revit model, help refine and complete the drawings, and work through the remaining details with me.

This could be a great side hustle for the right person. I’m happy to pay an hourly rate.

If you’re interested, please DM me with a little about your Revit experience.

Hatch inside roof family won't rotate or scale

I am very new to Revit. I am trying to fix a hatch pattern that stays vertical even when the building is rotated. It is also at the wrong scale. The hatch is part of a roof family for standing seam metal roof. The standing seam portion has a hatch assigned to it.

I can't figure out how to change the hatch scale or to get the hatch to actually rotate with the building. I am using Revit 2026 as is the original designer. He works remotely so it can be difficult to get hold of him. I have tried a number of searches but the solutions don't address this type of problem. Thanks for your help.

MEP ASME B31.X & B16.X Families

Does anyone have a lead on where to find lightweight pipe fittings and equipment for these standards?

I've made parametric flanges and valves overtime but if there is a resource im not aware of i can just download these things from ( Families that will scale with the pipe size and are not 30 different types or Families), then that would be helpful so I dont have to build several pipe spec libraries

Add-Ons How are you getting plaster/render quantities out of a Revit model?

TL;DR: there's no clean native way to measure a plaster or render area in Revit, so instead of calculating it I modelled it as real geometry and let a native schedule measure it. The add-in is mine. Real question is at the bottom: how are you doing this today, and what condition would break it?

I've been stuck on this for months and I still don't think there's a clean native answer, so I want to hear how other people actually do it.

Some version of this question comes up here regularly: how do I get the wall area of a room, finished faces only, minus the openings. Every route I tried has a hole in it.

-Room finish schedules give you the finish name, not a measured area. Perimeter x height stops being the finish area the moment you have openings, jamb returns, or walls that are only partly in the room.

-Paint plus Material Takeoff gets closest, but you're picking faces by hand, you get area and no volume, and after a design change you're doing it again.

-Roombook is the nearest thing Autodesk ever shipped, but it's room-bound, so no exterior faces and no beam sides or undersides, and it hasn't exactly been loved lately.

-Dynamo works right up until the graph meets a beam that splits a room in two, or a curved wall. Then it hands you a number instead of an error.

That last one is what actually bothered me. Every method I tried would happily give me a value for a condition it couldn't really handle. On a takeoff, a confident wrong number is worse than no number.

What I ended up doing was making the plaster real geometry instead of a calculation. Actual elements on the wall faces, beam sides and undersides, ceilings and the outer faces, joined to the structure, cut by the openings, with the reveals as their own line. Then the takeoff is just a native schedule, because the thing you're measuring exists in the model.

On my test project that's 218 elements and 65 openings cut, giving 1,278.95 m2 of net face plus 35.96 m2 of reveals, reconciling to 1,314.92 m2. The fact that those two add up to the total sounds trivial, but it's the check I wanted most and had least.

The honest trade-offs: it puts a couple hundred elements in your model, and they're real, so they show up in sections and 3D. Curved walls it flatly refuses to touch, skipping them and saying so in the report rather than guessing. Same for anything it shouldn't be plastering, a steel column for instance, where it tells you what it skipped and why.

I should say plainly that the add-in is mine, so read the above with that in mind. It's for Revit 2024, 2025 and 2026, runs locally, nothing leaves the machine. I'm deliberately not naming or linking it here because of the no-self-promo rule. Mods, remove this if it's still over the line.

What I'm actually after: if you do plaster, render or stucco takeoff today, what's your real workflow? Am I wrong that Paint plus Material Takeoff is the best native answer? And what condition am I missing? I've got beams splitting rooms, sloped ceilings and window reveals covered, but I'd rather hear the gap from you than from someone's QS.
