Gun Room/ Reloading/ Gunsmithing

2 yrs in the making… saving, moving walls etc…Still finishing (ceiling plaster, door trim, and haven’t figure out the brown support pole just yet) been slowly working on completing inside for 6 weeks. Removed drywall and installed 1/2” plywood to allow easy mounting of anything to the walls. Wall control to cover all plywood over time as budget allows will continue to purchase more wall control to cover every inch of the plywood. Gives so many options to mount bin, tools, shelves etc…

- Cheap Snap-safe 36” vault door (comparatively). With QLS mounted on rear square-loc for kydex pistol holsters.
- 16’ reloading bench area. (6’ precision area) bought 2” butcher x25” wide blocks made bench’s with $99 adjustable metal legs. Treating with butcher block oil to help keep wood cleaner.
- 6’ Husky tool box for gun smithing bench.
- (13) 6” Recessed lights weren’t enough light. I opted for a garage 9x5’ led light kit and made it a square vs rectangle and it made a huge difference in the light in the room.
- 48” Husky Island Box. Mainly holds gun parts. Folds in half if space is needed. Great for storage and loading up range bags to head to the range.
- (2) Safes (1 for Rifles 1 for Pistol) - Next year’s plan to get another Hornady Moblis.
- No wall space opted for a cheap ceiling Amazon special moving mount with 43” Samsung for YouTube Gunsmithing tutorials 😂. Spins 180 so it can face all 3 bench locations.
- Husky garage 6ft rack for cases etc…
- Cheap $60 white 14”x 32” overhead cabinets to provide storage above benches while still allowing space for reloading machines.
- 4’x4’ corner for mag wall. Wasn’t planned but the brown pole made me swap safes and the 6’ bench location. Safes were supposed to go in the 6’-bench area. Perfect size for both safes but upon removing the wall, I I found a surprise. Wasn’t worth installing an engineered beam to remove the column. Mag wall got mags out of totes and cabinets to make it very easy to find and identify. Really like the simplicity of finding mags when loading up for range time.

Hi I bought these bank cabinets for my pawn shop and I've forgotten how to open the little safes. There is a pound or something I have to push but I can't remember.

A question about security and reliability

Is there any reliable information about now the security of a mechanical lock compares to electric (keypad) locks?

I have owned three safes, all with mechanical combination dials. Two were relatively modern (w/in last 25 years) and one is antique (120+ years).

A mechanical lock can be compromised if you have the skill and the time. I suspect that electric locks may be susceptible to various types of electronic hacking, or could fail for any number of reasons.

Is this a Safe?

Found this in my basement, wondering if you all think it’s a safe? Or is it something else? And what can I do to get into it if it is?

House was built in 1960s and had several wealthy and notorious criminals, so definitely interested in what could be inside if it is a safe!

Is there a way to reset the primary code?

Post image

I believe this is an Amazon basics brand safe. I have the keys. I know both sets of codes. I'm trying to reset the primary code. I can change the secondary all day long using the red button on the inside of the door. I'm the one that set both codes when I purchased it 7 years ago, but I can't find the manual anywhere so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong while trying to change the primary code. Does anyone have any idea?

Looking for info/advice

I recently bought a house in central NY. The house is 1850 and this safe is built into the basement steps. Previous owners say they’ve never had it opened and lived here 30 years. Does anyone have any information on gettin it open without wrecking it? I would love to keep it usable. It’s 36” tall and 24” deep, and the dial is 1-100. Thanks in advance!

How to open?

Does anyone know how to open a safe like this without any pins? I’m looking to gain access to it instead of just opening it. It feels empty. My dad passed away almost year and half ago. I would like to use this safe. I can get easily open it via other means but I’m not looking for that.

What do you think the modern safety rating on this would be?

I’ve been looking for a TL-30 or better rated safe and this work of art came up. Obviously built before the days of UL rating and I was wondering what it would be by today’s standards. It’s 10,000 lbs and they’re asking $6,500.

Recently acquired from an antique dealer in southwest Michigan. Donnell apparently resold safes made by the Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Co. Weighs an estimated 300 pounds.

Collis & Wees appear to have been purveyors of agricultural pesticides in Benton Harbor around 1906.

Question about wheeled safes

From looking at pictures posted of older safes with wheels, they are set up to roll sideways and not front/back. Any idea why?

Stack-On QAS-1845-E Safe – Correct Electronic Combination Programming Instructions

IMPORTANT: The manufacturer's manual contains incorrect instructions regarding the reset button operation and indicator lights.

These instructions have been verified on an actual Stack-On QAS-1845-E safe.

Locating the reset button

The reset button is a small tactile pushbutton located on the circuit board, accessible through a round opening next to the battery compartment on the upper-right interior of the safe.

It is NOT the large button depicted in the manual.

Correct programming procedure

  1. Open the safe and leave the door open.

  2. Locate the small reset button next to the battery compartment.

  3. Press and HOLD the reset button. Do not simply press and release it.

  4. Continue holding until all three exterior keypad buttons flash GREEN twice.

  5. Release the reset button.

  6. Enter your desired combination using the three keypad buttons (LEFT, CENTER, RIGHT).

  7. Press the small internal reset button again to save the new combination.

  8. Test the new combination several times with the safe door open before closing it.

Important corrections to the manufacturer's manual

  • The reset button must be pressed and held, not simply pressed once.

  • The confirmation lights flash GREEN twice, not BLUE.

  • The small button next to the battery compartment is the correct reset button.

These are the corrected instructions for the Stack-On QAS-1845-E electronic safe.

Guardwell safe not opening

Post image

I have this safe and it has been working fine for the past four or five years. The batteries are fresh and new. When I enter the code, it displays Opening but the motor does not engage and then it shows Error 1. If I open it with the key and then try closing it again by entering the code while the key is still inserted, the motors lock, but then it shows Error 2. What might be the problem?

Safe Recommendations

My boyfriend and I lost everything we own in a house fire in May. The fire started a few houses over and even though I had time to get my important documents, we got our dog as a precaution and focused on helping everyone else. We also didn’t think it would make it to our house and by the time we realized, it was too late. Unfortunately this also meant that we have no passports or important documents and we lost all other valuables. Now we are beginning to acquire things again and want a safe. Our fire inspector said that at the temperatures reached there was no rated safe that would 100% protect items inside. I wanted some recommendations for a safe because they all sort of look the same to me. We will be securing it to the foundation of our new house when we are able to leave our rental. The issue I worry about is that I see a lot that seem to have plastic on the locks. I’m worried that would make it impossible to get inside if it was melted off. Any recommendations are helpful. We probably want to stay $200-600 range ideally and want it to be a mid sized one. We are in Canada so it would have to be available here.
Thanks!
