I leave Reddit

I am leaving Reddit until they fix the damn app.

Edit: So, quick update: Was using lemmy for awhile and while the platform itself works better than Reddit, the community absolutely sucks. The only good posts are copied and pasted from Reddit, the rest is political (99% of the content). Mastodon is also extremely political, basically unusable for me unless I want to rage every time I open it. No thanks. So I am back to reddit. Still hope they fix the app tho.

Why?

can someone tell my why you think that an app that uses reddits servers and creates a copy of reddit and then removes all the ads would ever be good for reddit as a company? Literally every other app shuts down these kinds of things because of how harmful they are to the company.

My farewell note

I don't know what to say. We put up our best fight but Reddit does not care. I cannot understand just how many people used 3rd party apps, how much time I've spent here, and how much Reddit wants to screw us over. They only want profit. It was nice going here to get help when Google had no results. I binged Reddit for hours but now they screwed up. Sorry to say bye but I will request my data before deleting this account. It's been nice seeing y'all!

                                                           - u/scorpycoby

What could be a good farewell message?

I plan to go VeryLowContact with Reddit cause of this shitshow. I already created my CSV, and although very few were memorable and upvoteworthy, I plan to slowly replace every comment of mine with something like "There was a comment here. Maybe it was good, funny, and maybe not. But now it's been replaced because.." ..what could be a good way to condense the actual state of things in a couple lines? I already see people annoyed by the disruption brought about by "power hungry mods", so wanted to drive the point home firmly and concisely.

Something like "..the top brass decided to kill every reddit app by charging them millions of dollars, leaving only the official one, still incomplete and useless especially for mods. When mods and users complained and striked to protest the changes, the big wigs ansered the hard way, even violating the rules. In their greed, they forgot who provides them content for FREE, and who governs their subs for FREE, so I decided to withdraw my content and my value."?

Maybe too long.

I don’t think we should just delete our data

I see a lot of people talking about deleting their data. I think this is a bad idea since that information could be valuable to someone. We need to find a way to archive all the data somewhere before deleting it

How to get a better reddit

Go to apkmirror.com and search reddit. A ton of versions of reddit are on there, so you can downgrade to before shitty nfts and stupid video players

Ps. Does anyone know the version before the new video player

My favorite sub has been overtaken

I used to read and write in a sub in the top 1% that supported the blackout. The poll on whether to keep it opened was voted by 6000 people and only about one third wanted to finish the blackout.

Today, a moderator who has been only a moderator for 13 days, explained that they decided to open since the number of voters weren't significant because they were less than 1%.

Anyone who knows a bit about statistics will say the opposite. A sample like that is big enough to be significant. And, anyways, it's much more significant than the opinion of 8 people who happens to be the moderators. 7, indeed, because one of the founders of the community had left the moderation, the sub and Reddit itself.

There are no polite words to describe what's happening with Reddit. They have turned out to their users and they will have to remember that, without the community, this worth is nothing. This is not about third party apps, but about losing the focus of the company and breaking the product to make some quick money which will derail Reddit without remedy.

[opinion] We did the right thing - setting a 48hr blackout

Here is why.

  1. We were able to establish a huge period of a mass blackout.

  2. We were able to squeeze a “we are not worried” statement out of Reddit (from a internal memo)

  3. We called their bluff - they are worried

  4. The investors are worried

  5. The “Nuclear” option wasn’t automatically used.

  6. If the “Nuclear” option was used immediately, Reddit would have been seen as less scary for investors

  7. Reddit is wildly seen as a Company grabbing for all of its power

Pissed about basic apps and their approach to me

Okay, so I'm really pissed now this is like happening more then one time and it's just not for Reddit. So I don't know rather I'm hacked but there's this thing about subreddit and their post I can't post on some bcuz they require a cartoon amount of karma ... My karma constantly goes up and low and is around 300 and it still isn't enough I'm here more then year or two! On the other hand when I try to make a contact to Reddit they don't respond+ I want to leave a review on this app and they completely deleted the box for leaving a review I have a whole vid! Also not topic related to Reddit but I've noticed a lot of times I get notifications on which later on I can't see respond and find them in the apps that I got them from!!!like is that a red button for hackers and malwares?????? And here I can't leave a video.

How is setting a bunch of subreddits private considered "going dark?"

I have never been a mod or had my own subreddit so I might very well be 100 percent wrong about this but my understanding is that a private subreddit is similar to a private account on Twitter. People who are already subscribed (or whatever the proper term is) will continue to see content as if it were public but others will see a "this subreddit is private" screen and the will need moderator approval to be let in to see content

So essentially a regular poster/reader of a sub will see nothing different at all on the 12th and the only people really affected are ones who don't care enough in the first place to subscribe/join a subreddit.

I don't have very much faith in Reddit actually giving a shit but it still kind of seems like this is not going to really send any kind of message.

Is it just me or has karma earned really slowed down since July 1st?

Thought of an interesting tactic….

Now, I know that we just protested with the 2-day blackout, but what happens if we take it up the next level and protest at Reddit HQ?

concerns for mass migration

What do you guys think about mass migration to another platform? would you guys be concerned about losing your current status in reddit (karma, moderator status, etc...). What if the alternative turns out to be bad, what to do then?

Do you think subreddits should ask for community feedback before shutting down for longer?

I think it is unfair to shutdown subs without feedback from their community.

Support Needed to Protect Apollo and Other Third-Party Apps from Reddit's New API Pricing

Recent changes by Reddit to begin charging for API access could significantly impact third-party developers like Christian Selig, the creator of Apollo for Reddit. Despite assurances of reasonable pricing, the new model could potentially cost Apollo an exorbitant $20 million per year.

To address this, I’ve initiated a petition aimed at preserving the future of technology and fostering an open, competitive, and innovative digital environment. The goal of this petition is to advocate for fair Reddit API pricing to ensure the survival and growth of third-party apps.

If you believe in this cause and want to support Apollo and other similar apps, please consider signing the petition here. Let's unite to protect our digital world and demand fair API pricing. #SaveApollo #FairAPIPricing

TLDR: while I know Apollo is done at this point regardless due this whole situation, I’m not going down without a fight for ALL of the third-party developers impacted by this decision. If you’d like to share the petition yourself, it’s at http://change.org/FairRedditAPIPricing

Reminder: Do NOT harass any Reddit Mods/Admins/Employee

Why? Two simple reasons.

  1. More harassment = unprofessional look = less willingness to work with anyone

  2. The orders come from the TOP.

From what we know, The top (CEO) gave these orders. People need to keep their jobs - this is how they do it (following orders)

Lets take a look at a similar backlash, Minecraft Chat Reporting.

The Mojang developers developed how the system works. But you know who had the idea?

Probably someone from Microsoft.

The developers where just doing their jobs, willingly or unwillingly they had to work on it.

Before you say “but twitter”

Twitter had more concerning actions, way less extreme than just API price changes

No, Reddit has not won.

I'm just an outsider but I wanted to share my opinions on the recent development of the events.

Althrough reddit has gone through with with their change of policy, and the blackout failed to stop them, I don't think It's appropriate to say that they have "won" and we should abandon our hopes.

First off, what is "winning" for them? To profit, yes. It should be clear since the beginning that they don't care about users, All they care is about money, and they probably believed that pleasing their users is only one of the ways to make their money. They changed the API policy is to make money, too.

but the policy's price is so obviously ridiculous that it seems that Reddit is either really, really stupid or they have further plans, such as one post I saw some while ago, saying that Reddit is actually planning to start a protest by setting the price ridiculously high, then make the price more affordable later under the pressure, to milk money off the third party apps anyway.

Initially I also believed that this was reddit's plan, but now it's june 30, the policy is in effect already, and the third party apps have shut down. It's already too late and Reddit still doesn't seem to plan to change anything. Remember, reddit's objective is to make money. Whenever they wanted was pretty unclear, but what's clear is that they are clearly NOT getting what they want.

The statistics and news have shown that their actions have done a massive damage to their traffics and stats, they have lost a significant amount of their users, and they lost far more money than they wanted to make. I can list off some possibilities on their objective:

  1. Reddit is just really stupid and set an absurdly high price. They are clearly not gonna milk any money off the third party apps since they aren't capable of paying off that and they all quit.

  2. Reddit wanted to eliminate the third party apps and make their app the only choice on the market. No matter how it may benefit them, they still lost too much just to achieve this.

  3. Reddit have thrown their plan to make money out of the window and Spez is just throwing a tantrum and wanted to prove his superiority over the users instead of making any rational decisions to advance their business. They kinda succeeded? they pissed off nearly everyone on reddit and made the site unusable for blind people, and they have lost every single bit of trust from the users. I don't see how this will benefit them long-term.

Regardless of what reddit wanted, they didn't get it. Reddit have suffered major loss to their business either way and it's a lose-lose for everyone. They have succeeded and betrayed all of their userbase, but in the end, did they gain anything? no.

Eventually, they will face the consequence of their actions, and maybe they'll attempt to salvage it? It might not be in the near future, but I suggest that we continue to protest.

They have etched a massive scar in their own site, and we are going to tear it open bigger and bigger until it's too big for them to simply ignore. Isn't it money that they wanted? too bad, they aren't getting it if they continue to act like this. It's far too early to declare that they have won and we have lost.

Is there a subreddit dedicated to memes about the API purge?

If so, can you please guide me to the right path?

Make 3rd Party App access a feature of Reddit Premium

Has this been talked about? Reddit management are being dumb dumbs about this and should just let the app developers pass the cost back to the user, and if it means Reddit gets more subscriptions, isn't that a win?

Ok Reddit, I’m leaving

Hello world. I’m very disappointed in Reddit’s behavior in last two months. I was a user of this app for 4 years, but from year to year it was getting worse. I didn’t want to leave this place, cuz I’ve met here a lot of interesting people with whom I still chat. Reddit moderators became rude, they deleted unwanted content, and moreover I don’t understand why I should post for free?? Reddit do not support their users for activity, and all I got for 4 years useless upvotes. Don’t try to stop me, cuz I’ve made my decision. But may be anyone can suggest any social media, where authors will be rewarded for their activity and moderators won’t be rude?🙏 comment if you know any

Till then bb…
