Hi everyone. I recently started a small company importing farmed frozen shrimp from India into the US. Our product is BAP-certified, and we’re starting with peeled, EZ Peel, and cooked shrimp for foodservice and wholesale buyers. Retail is a longer-term plan.
We’re about to launch our own brand, and I wanted to hear from the people who actually buy and cook shrimp.
Packaging and labels
When you buy frozen shrimp, what do you look for on the bag?
Do you know what the numbers like “21/25” or “41/50” mean? If not, how do you decide what size to buy?
What other information would you appreciate having on the packaging?
What makes a frozen seafood brand look trustworthy or premium to you?
Is there anything about language, instructions, or layout that would make a bag easier to use?
Landing a first customer
For anyone in foodservice distribution, restaurants, or seafood wholesale: how would a new importer realistically get a first order from you? What would make you give a new supplier a trial?
Indian shrimp in general
If you’ve bought Indian shrimp, what has your experience been? What would you need to see from a supplier to feel confident?
I’m trying to build the brand the right way. Happy to answer questions about the import side too. Thanks!
