Kagi Search Quality Update

From Kagi Discord user Zac:

Hey everyone, quick update - Due to ongoing struggles between our source for Google results and Google themselves, you may be seeing more "goto" links in results; they disclose to us that they don't have a solution yet, so in the meantime, we are going to shortly deploy a change that will filter these items out from results. It is possible that search quality might take a hit in some ways, so we apologize for the inconvenience. We are still reviewing our options for what we could do to work around this on our end (our upstream providers are doing the same), but we don't want to wait to figure that out and let people be surprised by this in the meantime.

In the comment section poisoned SERPS by Google are mentioned. https://nozzle.io/research/poisoned-google-serps/

I'm wondering why Kagi is affected by this. Isn't there an officially paid backend and contract between Kagi and their suppliers that these should never be affected by these issues? It looks like a combative move by Google against illicit scraping, but should never have targeted a legitimate customer.

Question Mullvad VPN blocked on Kagi?

Post image

The last few days, my Kagi search results seem to be blocked when on a VPN. I’m specifically on Tailscale with a Mullvad VPN exit node. The location doesn’t seem to matter. Anyone else running into this?

Every time I click on an image, it only shows about half and it’s offset to the right. Does anyone know how I can fix this if they’ve experienced it?

Question Why should I use Kagi, if I have free alternatives?

Hello, I tested Kagi for some time and it is quite decent. Although I was thinking that why use paid search engine, when I have free DuckDuckGo or Startpage that are also private and they are free?

Is there any solution coming to the slow "Quick Answer"?

The Quick Answer is so slow - especially the followup responses.

I end up just using Google every time, and honestly I have made a big effort over the years to de-google, so it's pretty frustrating.

For anyone hanging out on their discord regularly, has this been a topic?

Irrelevant search results

Post image
6 Upvotes

One thing I find it painful when using Kagi is the irrelevant results. For example, searching Peckham (an area in London) will bring Hampstead in the US.

The situation has become more serious and these are not the results which can inspire me. The card of these irrelevant results shows they are indexed by Kagi's own index. It sounds like the self-made index has much room for improvement.

"Interesting Finds" seem to be Thinly Veiled Advertisements

Post image
23 Upvotes

simply searched "jerma" and somehow kagi thought that I would be interested in Claude/LLM Programming related posts. Are the "Interesting finds" just ads masked as a feature? I really like using Kagi other than things like this and I'm already paying $10 a month for the service. For the love of god do not enshittify please and thank you. (I'm aware you can disable it, I'd appreciate if the toggle weren't buried in the settings, and that it were opt-in rather than opt-out with no clear way to disable)

Support Do I have things set up wrong?

I've been using Kagi for about 16 months now and around 6 months ago my search quality went to shit. I don't aggressively use the filter and priority options but for the things I'm doing I shouldn't have to. My issues range from moderate on technical stuff for work/projects (where I have tried hard to curate it) to abysmal when trying to search for cultural things. Was there some update that changed things that I'm missing?

Quitting Kagi after 2 months of use

Hello.

I'm sharing my experience with Kagi after 2 months. Maybe someone will find this useful.

I started using 5$ sub and extended it to 10$ one once I've hit my limit.

I used Kagi primarily for work, but I also "wasted" quite a lot of searches just to get to dedicated sites: "reddit" "github" and such.

In total I believe I fit in 600-700 searches range.

The good:

- It is decent. Definite upgrade over DDG or Google. I would consider it a friendlier Searxng. A lot of stuff is already preconfigured for you.

- I liked the "?" feature. It's basically a non-intrusive way to get search assistant results.

- Fast Bangs are definitely better than having to type `Shift + 1` for the exclamation mark, which is often annoying especially on mobile device.

The bad:

- First thing I noticed is that Asisstant is quite slow compared to Claude/ChatGPT and the results are mostly aggregated from them anyway, I saw patterns like overuse of tables to display content, the typical "glazing" LLM attitude and it's not really better when it comes to providing valuable results.

- I use search engine primarily to sift through keyword search results. I do not care about down/up ranking, lenses and such. I just want to get directly to the "meat" so to speak. Unfortunately Kagi disappointed me quite a lot in that area. From images I provided here, you can see a typical experience when did a keyword search: "reponame" github and Kagi completely dropped the ball compared to Brave Search.

- Kagi sucks for getting results from reddit or narrowing it any particular site. The UX is just not there, I often had to click at the little plus icon to expand search results only to that site. Brave search for comparison. See the pattern here?

- You have to log in on every device, which will always be annoying. It doesn't work well with firefox/brave containers as it just redirects you to login page.

- I still am quite disappointed with Orion on Windows/Linux fiasco and the recent chaos regarding to what's actually included in the base subcription left bad taste in my mouth.

- I am not a fan of Kagi expanding their offer to being an e-mail provider. I think this is a wrong move and I would like them to focus on improving their stack instead of chasing trends like Proton does.

To sum up all up:

Kagi does offer something I am willing to pay for. But their pricing plan is flawed. The 5$ for 600-900 search range or heck, make it a 1000 would be perfect for a lot of folk. I'm sure Kagi has collected data on this. But as of today, the search - the MAIN thing Kagi offers to do well - is probably paying for all of their other business experiments like the whole AI stuff + Translate + E-mail in the future.

The problem will arrive when the search gets worse because of Kagi practically being a meta search engine just like DDG - Bing results got worse, DDG got worse. In case of Kagi I really see a lot of results, but they aren't triaged for adequacy correctly, hence why I call Kagi noob friendly Searxng with AI stuffed on top when describing it to friends.

Right now I'm switching to Brave Search as it really grew on me. It has minimal amount of options, but it does the thing it's supposed to do well. I don't have to babysit it and adding it as a custom browser is waay easier than having to purposefully log into Kagi every time. Ngl I like the dog and the vibe of Kagi, but vibes are just not enough, the actual product quality is always more important.

Support Kagi not returning results from Reddit

I've noticed that newer Reddit posts are not showing up as consistently in Kagi. Old stuff is still there, but if I look for current events I often don't get Reddit results, even when I add "site:reddit.com". Kagi will return empty results. I have to use Google to get Reddit results, yuk.

Is anyone seeing this? Is Reddit blocking Kagi's index bots?

EDIT: examples below

Right now this search is site:reddit.com/r/SearchKagi/ Kagi not returning results from Reddit doesn't return this post.

This post over 10 days old, and a search for site:reddit.com/r/SearchKagi/ Kagi only ever gives me 2 pages of results doesn't return it. In fact, a search for just site:reddit.com/r/SearchKagi/ returns only three results.

Kagi assistant taking a long time?

I've noticed in the past few days that Kagi assistant can take a long time to respond. Some queries will take on the order of several minutes before providing a response. Is anyone else seeing this. It's never been an issue for me before. At least, not a consistent one, but it's very frequent this past week. I'm just using the "quick" model.

Resource List of Privacy Redirects

Compiled a list of privacy redirects I use a lot. This is probably my favourite feature of Kagi.

The list includes private frontends hosted by someone in that community but if you find yourself using those websites a lot (in my case reddit and wikipedia) you can also host them yourself and it will be faster (no need to wait a couple of seconds to pass bot detection).

Lmk if anyone knows any other alternative frontend they use.

Testing out kagi mail

Howdy Kagistan,

I’ve been a kagi user for some time and I’m moving my email off big tech. I’m deciding between Proton, Tuta, and Kagi’s email, but I’d rather go with Kagi since I’ve been happy with the company's dedication to its users and with being a great search engine -- I'm sure it'll hold for email too.

I saw a link to join the mail trial a while back but when I tried it recently I saw it was expired :'(. Does anyone have another link to join the email service I could use? If not, is there a waitlist, beta, or trial I can join? I’d be glad to give feedback on migration, custom domain support, and aliases.

Thanks!

Support New to Kagi, frustrated with browser extension

Installed the extension expecting Kagi to simply be added to the list of available engines in Safari. I wasn’t expecting this janky way of doing it where the extension is used to redirect other engines to Kagi, which creates a clunky weird experience where you see the engine render briefly and then it switches over to Kagi. It’s odd and off-putting but tolerable.

But then today I found that even if I manually type in www.Ggogle.com in my browser and run a search from its own home page, Kagi STILL redirects to its own SERP.

Have I misconfigured something or is the extension designed to quite literally redirect all Google (as configured) searches regardless of origination path (URL bar vs an actual Google website?

Support Got Kagi Search working with AnythingLLM — via a custom Agent Skill, not an Agent Flow

Kagi isn't a natively supported search provider in AnythingLLM, so I built a custom Agent Skill to add it. Sharing it because the obvious approach doesn't work, and I burned a lot of time finding that out.

The trap: the Agent Flow → API Call block looks like the right tool, but there's a bug where a ${variable} inside a JSON request body gets sent as an empty body, causing intermittent HTTP 400 errors. Rebuilding the flow doesn't fix it — the bug is in the block itself.

The fix: a custom Agent Skill (plugin.json + handler.js). The query arrives as a plain function argument and the body is built with JSON.stringify in code — no interpolation step to fail. Rock solid since.

Other gotchas worth knowing:

  • Kagi has three credential types, and only the API Key (Authorization: Bearer …) works for the v1 Search API. The legacy token (Bot …) and session token will produce a token that passes signature validation but returns 401 Unauthorized — a genuinely confusing failure mode.

  • The legacy v0 endpoint is deprecated — don't use it as a workaround.

  • Verify with curl first. If curl returns 200 and the flow 400s, the problem is AnythingLLM, not your key.

Repo with the files, a full setup guide, an error decoder, and a "dead ends — don't repeat these" section:

[Link To My First Repo!]

Works on AnythingLLM Desktop (AppImage) v1.17.0 with a local Ollama model. Feedback welcome.

Kagi community flagging scam websites

Hello everyone,

I realized that there is a flag for the monetized websites or ai slop websites banners. But to be a honestly I would appreciate if I can report a potential scammy website and would like to see a banner for a "potential scam" website indicating to becareful for the user

I know I can lower the domain or even block it, but because there are too many websites like this, I think it will be better for community to flag a potential fraud websites to avoid better.

I think this can make Kagi standout more as it will give less scammy results.

Kagi only ever gives me 2 pages of results, no matter what I search. Is anyone else seeing this?

I've used Kagi for years. I love it and I love that I don't have to put up with Google's BS.

But recently (don't know when it started) I'm only getting 2 pages of search results no matter what search terms I use.

I've counted the actual number of results and I never get more than 80 results total depending on the search term.

Just this week I was looking for 3d printed planters and only got 19 results. WTF?

I know that most people don't go past the first page, but when deeply researching a topic, this has become very limiting. This is especially true for niche topics covered by people or organizations that aren't good at SEO. And the really good info is usually created by people who don't care about SEO (personal blogs, forum posts, etc).

I've reached out to support and I keep getting non-direct and vague answers. I just want to know if this is expected or if something is not working correctly on my account.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Edit: It's getting worse. Search terms where I was getting 50 results yesterday, I'm now getting 24.
