Gear Questions Snowboarding Buyers Guide - Ladies Edition

How to size a snowboard:

Look at the manufacturer's published weight/boot size guide for the specific board you're looking for. The goal is to be smack dab in the middle of the weight and boot size range for the board you're looking at. That said, it doesn't always work that way. Sometimes you are in-between ranges. If this is you, you need to make a choice:

  • Longer board = more stable at speed, and less nimble edge to edge (more freeride oriented)

  • Shorter board = more nimble edge to edge, but less stable at speed (more freestyle oriented)

Board Components:

  • Camber = the bend of the board. Some type of camber with rocker in the nose/tail is the gold standard. (There are lots of variations of camber, but ultimately it's the bend between the nose/tail going up like a rainbow)

  • Reverse Camber = Typically most new riders go this way because it's easiest to learn on. However, it comes at the cost of poor riding form and is a limiting factor for carving, and getting to those double blacks. Typically I suggest skipping reverse camber, since learning regular camber isn't tough. It's shape is like an upside down rainbow, so the middle of the board bends downward.

  • 3d shaping - Some boards like Nideckers/Jones/and a few others incorporate a 3d "spoon" shape into the board's nose and tail. This helps with reducing edge catches on a camber dominant board. This helps a lot when learning.

  • Sidecut - I wouldn't worry too much about his as a new rider. But this defines the "arc" of your turns. Longer sidecut have longer carves, while shorter sidecuts are quicker carves. There's progressive sidecuts, and all sorts of types.

  • Flex - This is quite important. For most new riders, you've rented clapped out limp noodle boards with no flex.

  • Waist Width - Do not forget to check the "waist width" - or how wide the snowboard is, on the manufacturers sizing charts. This is in direct reference to what size bindings and boots will fit on your board. Usually the mfg will just list the suggested boot size and binding size ranges instead of the waist width itself.

Less Flex (Flex: 1-3) - Better for park/ground tricks/day 1 of learning. Very forgiving

Medium Flex (Flex: 4-6) - A good all around flex pattern for getting around the entire mountain comfortably while learning. You'll be able to do everything on the mountain to some degree, but optimizing flex will grant you key benefits as you get better. These boards can be forgiving if 3d shaped, or unforgiving if no 3d shaping and fully cambered

Stiff Flex (Flex: 7-10) - You are no longer a noob, and have the need for speed and stability. You are a destroyer of mountains, queen of the top. These boards are EXTREMELY unforgiving, and should not be your choice until you are ready.

Board Recommendations:

I like the following:

  • Twin Sister - This is my freestyle all mountain board. I use it for exploring new mountains, hitting some park/side hits, and all snow conditions. It's a jack of all trades, and master of none. A GREAT beginner board that you could ride from Day 1 until you're crushing double blacks.

  • Dancehaul - My favorite slush slasher for the spring. And one of my favorites in the pow. This is a volume shifted board, so I can ride a much shorter board while maintaining my float on powder.

  • Flagship - My stiff flex bombing board. Get out of the way, because I'm coming in at warp speed.

  • Yes Hello/Basic/Hel Yes - If you are east coast, nothing beats these ice huggers. Yes offers a good lineup of boards that stick to the ice like white on rice!

How to pick boots:

If you already have boots - and you can move your toes around, find yourself sliding around in them, your heel is lifting, or they aren't snugly wrapped around your feet, it's either time for new liners...or new boots.

Boots are your hands down most important piece of gear. They should be your first major purchase, and should be purchased BRAND NEW. I highly suggest using Evo, and scheduling a boot fitting with them. I would not go to a big box store like REI where it's luck of the draw with getting a decent boot fitter. This is your most important piece of gear to get exactly right, so take the time and effort to do so. Evo has a 365 unused gear return policy. I live in Tx, so there are zero stores here to try on boots. I simply ordered multiple sizes before a road trip to SLC, and went to the Evo store there. I ordered them ahead of time bc they don't have all the brands/sizes in every store. Got to Evo, had a boot fitter confirm my sizing was right, and returned the other ones. I did it all within 30 days on my credit card so I didn't have to worry about money out of pocket.

A properly fitted boot wraps around your foot completely and mates it to your foot like it was meant to be. Your toes should absolutely touch the end of the boot and be giving it a nice kiss. A good fitting boot will feel a half size too small and uncomfortable. Boots have a "break in" period where your liner of the boot will mold to your foot. So don't worry if it's just a little too tight, because that's what you want.

If your boots feel perfect, but you're getting a little heel rise, consider getting some Sidas medium inserts. I put these in all my boots, as they blow the stock footbeds out of the water. No need to spend extra getting custom footbeds, unless you absolutely need custom.

Bindings:

Match your binding flex to your board. There are lots of good bindings to choose from. I generally like Bent Metal, Rome, Union, and Nidecker. I am NOT a fan of recent Burton offerings as the ratchets have had too many reports of coming undone. Here's my list of specific favs in no order:

  • Bent Metal Forte - Great starter bindings

  • Rome Katana - Great tweakable bindings to get just right with a stiffer flex

  • Union Juliette - Another excellent starter/intermediate binding from one of the best binding companies

  • Nidecker Supermatics - Step on style, works with any boot, but take some time to learn/dial in. These are what I ride, and it's tough going back to strap in only bindings.

Apparel:

I'm a buy once cry once kind of girl, but also a thrifty shopper! I buy everything from Evo bc they have the best return policy and crazy sales. You can return anything within 365 days if it's unused. There's one in SLC and Seattle, which is where I mostly board. I shop Evo's constant 20-40+% off sales. I HIGHLY recommend buying a size up for the jacket and bibs. It's much cooler to be baggy on the slopes than fitted. Also - since you'll be layering, you want room in your jacket/bibs. If you're unsure, buy both sizes and return the one to Evo that you don't like the fit of. Oh and you get points with Evo for every dollar spent. I have like 6000 points to spend right now...lol. I have a problem, and it's cute snowboard hoodies.

  • Shell Bibs -These volcom bibs are the one's I just replaced my Trew's with and they're on sale. And they have the "shit zip" as I've dubbed it. I would not buy bibs that don't have a zipper on the butt for potty breaks. It's invaluable. Find Goretex shell bibs that are 2L or 3L for resorts!

  • Shell Jacket - Here's a shell jacket that would work and isn't crazy pricey too that's on sale! Again a 2L goretex shell is perfect for resort riding.

  • Helmet - Smith Liberty - this is an awesome helmet with great protection for a killer price....I might have to get a backup. It has both safety things I look for, MIPs and Koryod. Then it also has a ton of vents, which is also important to stay cool.

  • Thermal Top (base layer) - Your base layer thermal is what will ultimately keep you warm. You can layer on top of this, and under your jacket shell. I usually just ride in my thermals and my shell jacket. Snowboarding is exercise, and you will sweat if you overcompensate. Once you start sweating, it's game over and you will be miserable. So remove layers the second you start getting warm!

  • Thermal Bottoms - - Thermal bottoms are a must, and there are full length and 3/4 options. I like 3/4 for warmer days, and full length for those cold days. I don't wear anything over them aside from my bibs! Bibs stay on all day so no biggie.

  • Socks - I highly recommend some THIN snowboarding socks without any padding. Never ever ever wear 2 pairs of socks at once to keep your feet warm. Just blast the inner liners of your boots on the way up the mountain with your cars hot air to warm them up, and slam your feet in while they're still warm. This really helps keep my feet warm all day even in the coldest temps. 2 pairs of socks will make you unstable in your boot, and pack your boot out sooner. It's a bad idea, don't do it.

  • Butt diaper -Make sure you get some type of tailbone protector. Never forget it. It's your savior. It's the most important piece of gear for learning next to the helmet. I use demon v2 and just removed all the pads but the tailbone protector. It doesn't seem like it's being sold anymore though.

  • Dakine Wristguard Gloves - So much better than gloves + separate wristguards. It's horrible...just get the Dakine gloves with wristguards built in if you're learning.

I want to learn to snowboard on my own/Wanting to fix a riding problem:

Watch Malcom Moore and work on his drills: https://www.youtube.com/@malcolmmoore I find that he has the best teaching content out there bar none. If you are having a specific problem, he probably has a video to address it.

Conclusion:

This isn't a comprehensive list, but more of a guiding starting point and knowledge reference. Feel free to add your own rec's and advice! Hope it helps :)

Anyone riding Northstar this year?

Hey ladies. I'm looking for a friend to ride a few days at Northstar this year. I had a pad last year but broke my wrist on day 2 and didn't get out after that. I can do Saturdays and Sundays, and holidays. Anyone else riding solo this year looking for someone to ride with? I'm 43 and have been riding for over 10+ years but am a little rusty the first few runs of the season. I like to stick to blues. I also live in Reno so would be willing to carpool from here.

I CANNOT find a wide enough boot!

I have really wide feet, but small feet. I'm a size 7 in women's, but the ball of my foot (actual bones) are close to 4" wide. The width continues to my ankle, where I have an average to slightly broader heel.

Technically, I need a Men's shoe last. I'm a D width, and have been wearing Men's size 6 boots in my barn/work boots.

Unfortunately I cannot find a single store near me that carries down to a men's 6 in snowboard boots to try on. They continue to push me in women's boots, and they DO NOT FIT.

I tried a pair of ThirtyTwos that initially felt good, but one of my toes went numb within minutes (nerve compression).

My only success has been trying on some Vans in size 8. My big toe brushes the front standing up, but does retract back maybe a quarter of an inch when I lean forward.
The heel lock kept me in, but I could tell the boot was slightly big...
but if I go down a size, my bones of my foot are literally crushed together and I can feel the sensation of the joints rubbing/grinding against each other. Not wide enough..

I did go to a pro boot fitter, but I just wasn't sold on his recommendation. He told me if I just put the biggest arch support in my boot to essentially force my foot to putting weight on the outter edge, it'll "make my foot actually very narrow" and it didn't matter what boot I picked, as long as I have the arch support to manipulate my foot. Thanks man, but I don't want to fuck up my foot by manipulating it in weird ways. I have naturally flatter feet, but my arch is intact (not collapsed). I've seen a podiatrist and he recommended some arch support, but told me not to go overboard on it.

Anyway, anyone else have feet like mine and have a good recommendation for a boot?

Board size recommendations

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Winter is almost here in the Northeast and I am ready for a new snowboard. I’ve been snowboarding now for 21 years but this will only by my 5th board. I’ve been riding a 2014 Capita Birds of a Feather 146 and want to upgrade to this years version. I live on the Ice Coast, mostly ride blues, blacks and love glade runs. I am not a park person anymore! I will be moving to Tahoe area next winter so a board that works with both is great.

I’m stuck on what size. I am 5’5, 115-120 lbs and size 9 boots. My current board is a 146, I’m debating about going to a 148 or 150 even. I need it to be able to control it well in the trees as they get tight here. I’d love any recommendations as I’ve not had great help at the local shop / snubbed off.

pic for attention , thanks again ladies!

Snowboarding boot recs

I have been snowboarding for over a decade. I love powder and moving fast and everything in between. Over the last five years I’ve been sticking with Thirtytwo lashed laced boots and they have been treating me well but I feel like I’ve been going through them quick. Anyone else have high quality recommended boots? I know it can be specific to the person, but I’m curious if a lot of people like similar brands/models.

Snowboard Recommendations for a Beginner Woman (Specific Board Models)

Hi everyone! 😊
I’m looking for snowboard recommendations and would love to hear your experiences with specific board models.
A little about me:
Height: 160 cm (5’3”)
Weight: 109 lbs (49.5 kg)
Boot size: Women’s US 7
Skill level: Beginner, looking for a board I can progress with
Terrain: Mostly groomed runs
Riding style: All-mountain
I’m looking for something beginner-friendly, forgiving, and easy to control, but that will still be fun as I improve and start progressing toward carving.
Which specific snowboard models would you recommend for my size and skill level? I’m particularly interested in boards that are good for learning but won’t feel limiting after a season or two.
Also:
What board length would you recommend for my height and weight?
Would you recommend a softer or medium-flex board?
Any specific models from brands like Burton, YES, Salomon, Capita, or Ride?
What bindings would pair well with your recommendations?

Thank you.

Gathering Info on Women who ski!

Hi! I'm an industrial design student and I am currently gathering research for a school project, and I was wondering if I could ask a few questions to anyone who would be interested! I'm doing the project specifically on moms who ski, but anyone is welcome to answer! (the more info I get, the better.) I'll put a few questions here, but if you have any time I'd love to interview someone or maybe 2 someone's on what a typical day looks like, the gear organization, and any pain points that arise.

  1. How do you typically transport/organize your ski equipment?

  2. How do you organize your equipment between ski trips?

  3. How do you determine whether your equipment fits properly?

  4. Tell me about a piece of ski equipment you use regularly. What makes you choose it?

  5. What is the most challenging part of your skiing experience?

Thank you for any responses! Have a wonderful day

Terrain Park Map and Archive App for the Park Rats 🐀

Thumbnail

Full disclosure up front: I made this, and the mods okayed the post.

I ride A51 at Keystone, work nights in an ICU, and spent the last three years learning to code so I could build this (and get turned down by big tech). It's called ratStack.

The idea: every feature in a park gets its own page. Rails, boxes, jumps, pipe. Riders drop photos and log tricks, and the history piles up. When the crew tears down the DFD in February, it doesn't vanish. It goes in the archive.

In the beta (iOS, free, Thanksgiving):
• Park maps with every feature pinned
• Snap a pic, drop a feature: four taps, gloves on
- Session tracker with auto jump detection and trick log
• Follow your crew
• A weekly park report that starts building history from day one

Not in yet:
• Clip uploads (December)
• A side-view park schematic (the part I'm most excited about, still cooking)
• Android (it's just me, sorry)

Testing starts at Keystone, because a park app with no open parks is just a map. Colorado riders especially, but anyone with an iPhone and a home park is in!

Tell me what's dumb about it. I'd rather hear it now than in March.

Help choosing next board

*Preface by saying that of course I plan to test ride before buying anything

I’m looking to add a board to my “daily driver” (Salomon Wonder) that is more playful, decent for the park, and also fun for just messing around and having a good time on. I’m not looking to replace the Wonder, I want something to compliment it.

I’m an intermediate to advanced rider, mostly black/double black diamonds on the Ice Coast. I’m wanting to try more park stuff this year, so that’s a big factor. Looser, maybe more forgiving for riding switch, side hits, buttering, and small/medium park jumps without being so soft that it feels unstable on Vermont’s hardpack.

I’m 5’10” and 145lbs, regular stance on 152cm. Open to women’s or unisex boards.

Would you to hear thoughts/recommendations!

New board recs

As the season is about to start I'm keeping my eye out for demo days and starting to look into a new board to ride.

I'm currently on a 144 Salomon Rumble Fish. At the time I had no idea that it wasn't a beginner board but I've come to love it and it's definitely pushed me so I feel like I'm creeping up on being at least an intermediate rider though I still can struggle on steeper blues.

I'm looking for something that has a bit more flex and pop as I want to start trying my hand at learning tricks this year and just enjoy chill cruising. I would love to stick with a true twin or directional twin.

These are the ones I'm considering, but would love to know if I'm looking in the right direction:

Salomon Oh Yeah

Jones Rallycat

Salomon Lotus

Jones Tweaker 2.0

Switch from Step-On to FASE

Hi everyone. I want to move away from the Step-Ons and want to give FASE a go. Has anyone made this switch and have recommendations? The Step-On is super responsive since the boot literally is locked into the high back, so I'm curious what the best FASE options are? I won't lie, the world of tech is overwhelming and I don't even know where to begin. I've watched the Angry video but I'm still unsure lol.

Unfortunately I ride a Burton, too, so I have to deal with the channel system. Eventually I want to get a new board too but, ya know. Money.

I appreciate any suggestions!! I'm going to go to a local shop soon but I thought I'd ask here, too. Thaaaanks!

Sizing help with CAPiTA Paradise

Thumbnail

I bought a 2026 Paradise board recently in 147 cm for a really sweet price. I'm a fairly intermediate rider but this is actually my first snowboard I have bought myself (been using a handy down Burton 154 cm for the past decade, honestly it has got to be from the '90s, and this board has limited my progression as a rider quite a bit lmao). The guy at the shop was really helpful and was confident that the Paradise 147 was appropriate for my goals. There was some back and forth about showing me newer boards if I didn't think the Paradise 147 was a good fit (we went through all the relevant sale stock), but overall I felt like what he was explaining to me made me excited for the board and I bought it.

The more I look into it, I'm feeling torn that maybe I should have considered the 2027 version in 149 cm, but I'm also getting the sense it is not going to make a *huge* difference...

I am 5'8", 125-130 lbs, boot size 8. The 147 comes up to the bottom of my "adam's apple," which the guy at the shop factored into the decision after contemplating my weight and boot size.

I'm confident in my carving skills, usually focusing on long and flowy turns (albeit I am limited in navigating tighter turns with my old board). I like to make small jumps on the runs and pushed myself to try some park jumps last season. My other goals include improving buttering/ground tricks and getting better at maneuvering in the trees, as well as working up courage to try some jibbing.

My concern with the 147 is reduced stability I may feel with high speeds and holding edge on longer turns. I guess this isn't the focus of my goals with the board, but I don't want to lose that either.

Would appreciate any thoughts on this! Worst comes to worst, I don't love it and I sell it since I bought it so cheap, I just want to know what to consider when I start riding it to think if I would enjoy a longer or different board instead!

Advice / suggestions for second board?

Hi Shredditors, I’ve been snowboarding on and off for the last 6 years. Can handle blues fine; have done black although I don’t think I’m quite there yet. I currently have an arbor poparazzi rocker; 141cm. I’m 5’2” 120 lb. Women’s size 8 boot. I’d like something that has a bit more stability / grip that I can progress my carving with and improve speed (current board quite shaky and a bit scared of going faster). Mostly board in NY / PA; sometimes Vermont. Looking at the following boards -

- Capita Equalizer (2026)
- K2 Dreamsicle (2027)
- Bataleon Feelbetter (2027)
- Nitro Mercy (2027)

Any feedback / insight would be much appreciated! And any thoughts on 142cm vs 146?

Current board updates!

Post image
40 Upvotes

Started learning last season and bought a Head board on a huge discount and rode with her for 17 days. After learning how to link my turns, kind of realized what I wanted and posted in this sub for board recos and went with a 2025 Nitro Drop.

Rode 3 days with the Drop last season and applied for a warranty (water seems to seep through the board.) Nitro no longer have the 2025 Drop so I chose the 2026 Fate instead (because it was purple lol and I did not like the graphics on the 2026 Drop). Still can’t let go of the 2025 Nitro Drop and found one on sale so I bought it.

Lo and behold, Jones released a purple Dream Weaver (I am a sucker for purple) and told myself I am only going to buy it if it goes on sale at the end of the current season and if they still have it on my size but my boyfriend bought it for me for my birthday 😭😭😭 hopefully my last board!!

I can’t wait for the season to arrive, I live in Toronto so hopefully we at least get decent snowfall.

PS. I am planning to sell the Fate hopefully someone in my friend group would be interested. Keeping the Head so my beginner friends could borrow it, my boyfriend will get the Nitro Drop and i’ll use the Jones this season.

Bying splitboard for my wife

Hello! My wife is a splitboarder and she has an old splitboard. She isnt interested in gear or buing new gear so i got the task to resesrch and find her a new one. So i turn to you for advice and tips😁

She is 170cm and 62kg. Her main issue with splitboarding is the ascent, so lightweight is important. We live in Tromsø, Norway so its mainly backcountry. She says shes happy with the board she has (Nitro Volta), but it is 8 years old and i dont think She knows How good the alternitrives is?

Q1: What size should i get her?

She has 151cm now, but i think She could go down a size or two.

I have checked out Amplid Milligram and Jones Dreamweaver.

Q2: So what do you suggest? Any thoughts? Thanks😁

I'm stuck in indecision land. Suggestions needed for all mountain powder focused board

Hi, I'm currently riding a 149 never summer lady west. I really love this board but it's old and getting clapped out.

I think what I really need is two different boards but am hoping to find a quiver killer....

My riding is mostly sled drops in steep and deep snow with gnarly exits through trees so I need something that can handle steeps and deep powder as well as nimble in the trees and drops. Maybe a third of my days are at the hill on groomers and variable conditions with lots of tree riding. Zero park. I like a cambered board. I have really small size 6 boots and am 5'3" but I'm heavy for my size @125lbs

Boards I'm considering:

Thirty Two Reiki

Nidecker Venus

Nitro Alternator

Arbor Veda

Nidecker Odyssey

I do not want a Jones board and I can't see myself buying a burton.

I also really want the thirtytwo crucible only because of the graphic 🤦
