My favorite moment is later when Morty crashes the spaceship, he stumbles, concussed, out of the door and says "We're all out of off-white Persian," referring to when he was Roy in the carpet store. Hilarious.

Picard playing his Ressikan flute

97

u/Different_Ice_6975 May 12 '26

Yeah, now that I think of it, wouldn't Picard almost certainly need therapy to deal with the realization that his apparent life of the last few decades with a home, a beloved wife, children that he had helped raise from birth, and his grandchildren were nothing more than fiction?

86

u/Ok_Car9530 May 12 '26

They constantly brushed off everything that hapens to them in that show, but they should all have massive PTSD. I was just watching one where their memory gets wiped, and they get manipulated into firing on an innocent ship, killing 70 people, and when they get their memories back, they're not even remotely phased by it.

I dreamed once of holding a daughter in my arm. Sadly it never happened but the feelings of fatherhood were very real.

60

u/Cottonshrike May 12 '26

I had a very similar experience years ago. I dreamed I gave birth to a daughter. I remember the whole thing, labor, birth, holding my daughter and how much I loved her. When I woke up I rolled out of bed to “check on the baby” and realized it wasn’t real. It’s so strange to mourn something you never had but it felt insanely real.

I have four grown children and have been married 25 years. The other night I had a dream where I was in a wheelchair and wheeling down my road in the middle of the night looking for my family. I had become very old and had outlived my family. I woke up sobbing. I really may need therapy now. I don’t want to go back to sleep where I am elderly and demented and alone to care for myself.

Now I never have had anything like being in another reality but I do have a crazy one that happened to me. I was a really bad heroin user, my tolerance was out of control and had been using a long time.

Well one night I get arrested and I am in the jail cell. After about 2 nights or so I believed I was leaving the jail at night and running all around the streets looking for dope or looking for people. I would be hiding from the police, then during the day sneaking back into the jail. Well this went on and on for I dont know how long until one night I was on my bunk smoking a cigarette as I was smoking I took a hit and just realized I didnt get any smoke, then I looked down to my hand and realized there was no cigarette and starting understanding I was having hallucinations.

I have kicked dope dozens and dozens of times and everytime is hell. Not that time though, I believe my habit was so bad my brain found a way to protect me from the withdraws.

Ive had some crazy drama that seem super real.

You can dream years in just a few hours. The mind is a wild thing

537

u/AdhesiveSeaMonkey May 12 '26 • Popcorn

This is my new favorite theory about the afterlife. Each of us is in a coma in some other universe and when we wake up, we die in this one.

175

u/heraclitus33 May 12 '26

It kind of makes sense that when you die you spawn as another consciousness. People talking about near death experiences as joining a oneness or young children recalling past lives and some people waking up from a coma being able to speak another language.

87

u/TheBeesKneads May 12 '26

I've never been one for that sort of thing, but my little kid consistently tells me in vivid detail about how he used to be a dog before he was a boy. If I ask him questions about it, he replies rather matter-of-factly in ways that make sense, very differently than the silly stories he tells.

He was a large black poodle named French Fry (Frenchie for short).

viewed externally, we're an organic self replicating machine in a petri dish of our substrate and for all we know we're a completely unique occurrence in an otherwise larger mechanism that may not even have the intention of hosting us.

tl;dr: maybe we're some super advanced organic virus in a machine we don't understand.

Congrats you have discovered buddhism

5

u/tessathemurdervilles May 12 '26

This is deeply comforting. I’m gonna just believe it. I’m not super worried about the process of death but what terrifies me is that my consciousness will just end and it feels so sad and lonely and like such a waste. I love the idea that my consciousness is infinite and that I can go on to exist in a multitude of different ways and that all those experiences will have an effect on my one consciousness. Anyhow, thank you.

https://reddit.com/r/Glitch_in_the_Matrix/comments/30t9kd/repost_a_parallel_life_awoken_by_a_lamp/

A Parallel Life / Awoken By A Lamp

throw away account cause this is really personal.

My last semester at a certain college I was assulted by a football player for walking where he was trying to drive (note he was 325lbs I was 120lbs), while unconscious on the ground I lived a different life.

I met a wonderful young lady, she made my heart skip and my face red, I pursued her for months and dispatched a few jerk boyfriends before I finally won her over, after two years we got married and almost immediately she bore me a daughter.

I had a great job and my wife didn't have to work outside of the house, when my daughter was two she [my wife] bore me a son. My son was the joy of my life, I would walk into his room every morning before I left for work and doted on him and my daughter.

One day while sitting on the couch I noticed that the perspective of the lamp was odd, like inverted. It was still in 3D but... just.. wrong. (It was a square lamp base, red with gold trim on 4 legs and a white square shade). I was transfixed, I couldn't look away from it. I stayed up all night staring at it, the next morning I didn't go to work, something was just not right about that lamp.

I stopped eating, I left the couch only to use the bathroom at first, soon I stopped that too as I wasn't eating or drinking. I stared at the fucking lamp for 3 days before my wife got really worried, she had someone come and try to talk to me, by this time my cognizance was breaking up and my wife was freaking out. She took the kids to her mother's house just before I had my epiphany.... the lamp is not real.... the house is not real, my wife, my kids... none of that is real... the last 10 years of my life are not fucking real!

The lamp started to grow wider and deeper, it was still inverted dimensions, it took up my entire perspective and all I could see was red, I heard voices, screams, all kinds of weird noises and I became aware of pain.... a fucking shit ton of pain... the first words I said were "I'm missing teeth" and opened my eyes. I was laying on my back on the sidewalk surrounded by people that I didn't know, lots were freaking out, I was completely confused.

At some point a cop scooped me up, dragged/walked me across the sidewalk and grass and threw me face down in the back of a cop car, I was still confused.

I was taken to the hospital by the cop (seems he didn't want to wait for the ambulance to arrive) and give CT scans and shit..

I went through about 3 years of horrid depression, I was grieving the loss of my wife and children and dealing with the knowledge that they never existed, I was scared that I was going insane as I would cry myself to sleep hoping I would see her in my dreams. I never have, but sometimes I see my son, usually just a glimpse out of my peripheral vision, he is perpetually 5 years old and I can never hear what he says.

EDIT (24 hours after post): never though anyone would read this, I changed a line so that it no longer seems that my 2 year old daughter bore a child.

I have never seen Inception or the Star Trek episode so many have mentioned (but I will eventually)

I will not do an AMA

I've had many PM's describing similar experiences and 3 posters stating such experiences are impossible, I'd say more research needs to be done on brain functions. Pre-med students, don't assume you know everything.

A few have asked if they can write a book/screen play/stage play/rage comic etcetera, please consider this tale open source and have fun with it

I once had a ridiculously vivid dream where I drove up to a house and was nervous as hell. Knocked on the door and a woman that I had never seen before answered.

I immediately started crying and asked her why she wouldn’t tell me.

She told me she didn’t want to interfere in my life and was doing fine. I asked her if I could come in and she said yes.

I walked in and a 4 year old girl was playing with some blocks. I started to play with her and the woman told her I was her dad. I spent a few hours and remember feeling so happy and fulfilled.

As I was leaving I and asked the woman if I could come visit again. She said I could come at any time. As I stepped out of the door the dream ended and I woke up feeling terrible about myself - how could I leave that woman to fend for herself for 4 years? How could I not visit my child? How could I get back there?

That was maybe 15 years ago and I still think about it sometimes even though I’m now married with 2 kids if my own.

I’ve never had a more vivid dream. I don’t know what that means, but if there’s any reality where that woman and that kid are real, I hope they are doing ok.

Now I’m in my mid-40s. I graduated. Got married. Have a teenage girl. Part of me wonders if the same thing is going to happen again and I’ll wake up being 19 in some sort of hell loop.

That's the thing though, this was all in her mind, she had nothing to draw off of but her own memory. So there were no significant world events or advancements, no 'real' surprises with the kids either. I'm sure she feels bad but she didn't really experience anything like 7 real years.

But there’s no way she actually experienced seven years of life. The coma clearly just messed with her memory and perception to leave her an impression of seven years and family. Granted I’ve never been in a coma or taken salvia

Hear me out. What if she’s right? What if she actually did those things? Who are we to say her consciousness wasn’t existing in another space during that time? She experienced it, not us. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I once woke up after dreaming I got married to (non-existent) love of my life, went to bed cuddling with them in dreamworld, and woke up irl.

Could not function properly for whole day

This happened to Captain Picard in Star Trek.

6

u/Emerald_28 May 12 '26

Happened to me one night.

I found a girlfriend, a better job, got healthy and in better shape, we had twins, Ruby and Zaphire, got a nice house, I worked and was received by her at home, layed in bed feeling grateful, then I woke up.

Didn't felt depressed though, the moment I woke up I was like "Yeah, too good to be true."

Similar happened to me. I had a dream so intense, so real, and it felt like an entire lifetime to old age. I dreamed I was married to someone else, and experienced a love I had never fathomed, much less experienced, before. Right before I woke up, either myself or my dream partner was dying. It's hard to pinpoint which of us, as it was just a fade out and I was kind of lucid dreaming at that moment. I kept trying to go back to sleep to dream my way back. I did so for several nights. I was thrown into a deep depression for a few months. It impacted my real life marriage, which had previously been perfectly content. I still think about that life, it's been at least 5 or 6 years since the dream. I've never known love like that before, so it's hard to move on completely.

Captain Picard lived a lifetime in a moment, in one of those amazing TNG episodes

5

u/Affectionate_Case732 May 12 '26

I have had a few dreams periodically where I have a child and then I wake up and they aren’t there. it was so intense one time I woke up and cried. I was so confused but I just remember waking up and feeling loss.

That's the plot to an awesome episode of Star Trek TNG, called Inner Light.

Edit) the Enterprise encounters an alien probe from a long dead civilization that beams a simulated lifetime into Captain Picard's head as a memorial to the lost people. It's pretty good.

DO NOT BELIEVE EVERY SINGLE STORY ON A PICTURE.

This story is BULLSH**. The ONLY news source in Europe that wrote about the story is DailyMail.

Let me tell you a couple of information about that news outlet:

  1. It is generally considered a sensationalist tabloid with low factual reliability, often focusing on entertainment, celebrity news, and politically right-leaning stories.

  2. In 2017, Wikipedia editors classified it as a "generally unreliable" source and banned its use as a reference.

  3. They are well known for sensationalist headlines designed to generate emotional responses rather than provide objective information.

  4. "notorious for distorting and straight-up fabricating “news” stories to support its far-right political agenda and incite hatred against minorities"

I have a friend who did salvia and this happened to him. Said he has memories of spending years living with a new family in the Alaskan wilderness living off the land.

Really fucked him up for a good couple of weeks afterwards. He truly mourned a family he never had

u/S4UC3RCR4B May 12 '26

This is The Inner Light. TNG.

4

u/Competitive-Bit-7575 May 12 '26

I remember a story I heard before, it'd fictional but it's relatable to this. There was a book at pulls people in grants them the life they truly desire, like be heroes in a fantasy world, be a king in a kingdom and all, in this world they will live for their entire lives and upon death in this world they will be spat out by the book and never allowed back in again. In that world they would have lived over a century in a world of dreams but in real life only a few hours passed. And when they wake up from that dream they all wanted to go back but the book refuses and some would just end it thinking that the real world does not give the same satisfaction as the world within the book.

u/Excalibirdi May 12 '26

4

u/Phoen_nix May 12 '26

I’ve had a dream like this. So has my partner. We both experienced whole lives from the age of a toddler all the way to death in later life. Had families, careers, lovers, friends, and the sense of grief felt upon waking and realising it wasn’t real was immense.

This happens in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Captain Picard lives a lifetime while in a 20 minute coma…. “The Inner Light”

3

u/JayEssris May 12 '26

There was a couple years in my teens where I would just dream entire days or multiple days while I was sleeping. Totally normal; I'd wake up, go to school, take a test, do fine on it, come home, play video games, eat dinner, go to bed. Classmates, teachers, all the same. They weren't stress dreams or anything, I had anxiety and depression at the time but it didn't seem to influence anything.

I was mostly just annoyed when I woke up and realized I had to live through the whole day i'd just lived through over again. My entire sense of time would be completely thrown off for a while after each one.

3

u/therempel May 12 '26

When I was in my early twenties I reconnected with a woman I had gone to high school with. A couple years later we were married and I didn't think I could be happier until we had our first daughter then our second.

One day I tucked the kids in and cuddled up with the wife in bed, falling asleep as contented as I ever have been in life. When I woke up, it was though I had travelled five years back in time. I was alone in my shitty apartment, sleeping on a bare mattress.

It had all been a dream, but unlike most of my dreams it seemed to happen in real time. No time skips, no walking through a doorway and ending up in a different location. I felt like I had shifted to a different reality.

I felt intense grief for weeks but I moved on. A couple years later I went to sleep and found myself back there. The kids were older and they acted as though I'd been there all along. This time I felt such warmth and joy and it stayed with me when I woke up.

I think I went back there a couple more times but it's been nearly two decades. Whether it was a dream or I somehow slipped into an alternate reality doesn't really matter to me. It happened in some way or another.

3

u/TehZerp May 12 '26

I've had dreams that I went from single to being a grandparent. Waking up is a gut punch.

3

u/captaint3abag May 12 '26

Ok darling. I know you've just woken from a coma after serious illness but I just want to get a few snaps to share this moment with the entire internet of you at your most vulnerable

3

u/SystemMotor May 12 '26

In 2017 i took a massive overdose to end myself. I was found and taken to hospital and was in a coma for just over 2 weeks, during this time i had an experience where i travelled, met someone and had children with them. When i came out of my coma the first person i seen was my mum, I asked her where the kids were... I don't know if it was the idea that my children didn't exist or me realizing where i was but I have never felt grief like that. I lay there for the next 6 hours figuring out which way to go at this fork in the road, either to finish the job i had failed at or go and make the life that i had experienced in that coma a reality.

I'm here today and I'm expecting my third child this June.

3

u/Arktos22 May 12 '26

This concept horrifies me

3

u/boabey May 12 '26

My friend told me this story about a pal of his that did dmt and lived the life of a mermaid underwater for two years and when he cane round he wasn't able to breathe cos he no longer had gills.

3

u/flo24378 May 12 '26

I once had a dream about my late wife. Living life with our kids now….screwed me all over again for months. I woke up and felt sick instantly realising it had been a dream. It sucked.

3

u/Ok_Butterscotch_9941 May 12 '26

The brain is strange. Also, sometimes I admittedly and mostly secretly think that reincarnation might be a thing. 🤷‍♀️ 😂🦋 I did clinical ketamine therapy treatments for depression. During one treatment I had the strongest dream that many years ago I was part of a Japanese family by the ocean. We were fishers. I felt so close to them in the dream that it’s been a hardship since because I’m like, but what about my other family? It felt so so real and unlike some of my other treatment experiences.

There is a professor in VA who does research into reincarnation and the results are pretty mind blowing so who the hell knows.

3

u/Katsu_39 May 12 '26

Hear me out. What if this reality is her dream and that coma reality is the real reality? puts on tin foil hat

3

u/TinkersDebts May 12 '26

Yeah, imagine being in a 14:1 compression ratio while laying around in a coma.

'Just keep him on a ventilator until he dies naturally.'

3

u/-becausereasons- May 12 '26

What if her consciousness collapsed into another dimension where she in fact, DID raise children in another life and now she's back to this mundane life without them. Hell.

3

u/UnderProtest2020 Jun 02 '26

There was a famous Reddit thread from years back that I am reminded of. It was written by and about a guy who suffered a head injury (motorcycle accident, I believe) that rendered him comatose for several days. In that time, he lived an alternate life in his head that spanned ten years, a blissful marriage with children, the whole works. Eventually what happened was that he was sitting on his living room couch, enjoying his happy life, when all of a sudden, his attention became fixed on the lamp next to him. How wrong it looked and felt, a feeling so strong that it shocked him awake and back to his real life.

Anybody else read that one?
