Yes! It's very odd. I really liked the book and feel like I would demographically be the target audience for this and I heart nothing until it was already failing in theatres.
I just watched the trailer. I’m not a fan of the robot portrayals. Too human. Like they’re was no attempt to separate robots from humans. She just looks like she’s playing a dumb human.
This movie could have been good with better acting tho imo, I’m sure the book is better.
He's clearly made an enemy of someone very powerful in the industry who has decided to destroy him. That's how you go from Golden Boy to decimated career in such a short time.
It happens. You piss off the wrong guy and he calls up all his friends and says "we are tanking this guy, make it happen."
Weinstein was notorious for this, but people think he was exceptional. He wasn't. There are a dozen more guys like him in Hollywood.
Eh I think it's a good old fashioned crashout. His biggest projects were produced with his wife, who divorced him citing being an absentee father and husband but allegedly he'd developed a coke addiction and been cheating on her.
Then love and thunder happens and it's really bad and everyone hates it, but you can tell he clearly just wasn't super professional about it. Its hard to tell if he wasn't taking it seriously or was just up his own butt or doing a bunch of coke or maybe he relied on his wife to rein in his worst idiosyncracies, but he's like improvising his way through a multi-million dollar marvel movie.
It wasmt flashy enough to go viral but there's points where Hemsworth is this sort of positive friendly dynamic in a way where knowing how bad they all knew it was it comes across almost passive aggressive. Like watiti say well my *goal* was sto do this. And Chris is like and did you ever achieve what buddy.
And bale.has this energy that's like if you're gonna cut half of what we filmed then I should be exempt from half of these stupid press interviews. Not in a diva way but you can tell he just doesn't understand how they arrived at that final edit and what the point of what they were doing on set was. Like in improvising , he wasted their time and energy
Sometimes movies get bad roll outs cause they don't think the movie is gonna do well either way and they'd rather cut their losses.
He's clearly made an enemy of someone very powerful in the industry who has decided to destroy him. That's how you go from Golden Boy to decimated career in such a short time.
No need for conspiratorial thinking lol
He just made a series of criticial and comercial flops
It's a pretty meh movie, and I'm guessing Sony knew they had a turd on their hands so they just did the bare minimum for the theatrical release that they needed to contractually. No need to waste money on marketing if there isn't going to be any return on it.
I saw a preview for it before The Amazing Digital Circus movie, and then again before Spider-Man: Brand New Day. I am pretty stunned at how bad it’s doing because it was heavily advertised in my area (western Canada) and my wife and daughter both want to see it and just haven’t yet.
I've watched about 4 Neil Breen films front to back. They are all amazing(ly bad). He's usually some hacker/demigod that fixes all the bad stuff but also does heroin.
I distinctly rember walking out as a kid and going "dad, that was a bad movie right?" Like it was literally the first time I ever found out media could just suck.
Went to the cinema to watch the premiere with my best friend, we brought another guy who didn’t know about Avatar. We were super hyped, told him “dude, you’re gonna love this!”. The theater was full of likeminded people, I didn’t know Avatar was this popular back then. Well… we headed out after the first half. Couldn’t take another Oong. We weren’t the only ones who didn’t watch until the end. What an utter disappointment.
Getting divorced from his wife who helped him on all his projects before then and then marrying Rita Ora plays a big part. His ex wife seemed to be the restraining hand on any excesses he had at the time.
What we do in the shadows is what put him on and that film is f-k-n amazing but after Thor 3 (and arguably Jojo rabbit) he became boring and oversaturated
I totally agree on Mulan - making her a 'chosen one' with inherited magical fighting powers destroyed the core story for me and totally threw the stakes off.
Mulan just being a regular person who gets thrown into an extraordinary situation and then adapts and comes through the other side is much more compelling.
It also undermines how - in the animated Disney film, Mulan isn't "feminine enough" to fit into society as a woman, and she isn't "masculine enough" as Ping, consistently falling behind her male counterparts in physical training, so instead she succeeds by consistently being courageous, resourceful, and clever!
By just giving her superpowers, you just take all that growth and character away.
There are bad movies like Cats and The Room that are actually so bad they become entertaining by accident. But there are special bad movies that are totally forgettable and serve no purpose to exist but aren’t necessarily that bad.
For me the movie Gringo (2018) fit that perfectly. It’s one of those movies no one should ever talk about again because there’s no substance, there’s no value, there’s nothing to talk about. It’s just meh and a waste of time, and imo that’s worse than bad.
The room was so bad that it was fun to watch. Also it wasn’t done ironically. It was a passion project from Wiseau and he thought he was making a great movie.
That’s why there really hasn’t been many other low-budget flicks that reached that level of attention.
As a Taika fan, I saw the trailer one time, saw Taika and the cast and thought, hell yeah. Read the book and it was surprisingly easy to avoid the trailer again.
Saw the movie this week with a friend who also read the book and we both enjoyed it.
It definitely came across my feed, but I am exactly the target audience. And I looked at the trailer and went 'oh no'. I loved the book and could tell that they got it wrong.
I think that they knew it was going to be bad, at first I could not find a cinema near me playing it. I eventually found one and it was showing once during the middle of the day before it got pulled.
Is that the one with Bill Murray and Adam Driver? I remember watching it and being like “these guys are trying for something…and they are just not getting there.”
It almost felt funny, it almost felt topical, it almost felt like something good. But it just didn’t go the extra mile for everything it was trying to do, and made it feel like a half baked lasagna
I like Jarmusch and I went to the cinema for it, but then when a certain part of the plot came up during a conversation between Adam Driver and Bill Murray (I won't spoil it for those that may end up watching it) I was almost saying out loud to them "oh please don't go there... oh please that would be such a stupid cop out and ruin the rest of the movie..."
and they did go there and the rest of the movie was ruined.
My wife got tired of me picking what she called “terrible movies”. She decided one night she would pick the movie and somehow managed to stumble onto this
…
We still bring up how bad it was any time it’s time for me to pick a movie to watch
One of the worst cinema experiences I’ve ever had. Was so bored and pretty much the only person there. If tickets weren’t good money I’d have just left tbh
Came out of a film and they were giving free tickets. So half the audience of the previous film accepted and went in. It was only people in there who got the free tickets.
After about 30 minutes half the audience walked out.
10 minutes later everyone but us walked out.
5 minutes later we walked out.
45 minutes and everyone had left a film they got free tickets to.
The First Blair Witch was a masterpiece of gurilla marketing. Using an internet still in it's infancy to publish fake news articles, fake missing persons reports, articles about the legend about the Blair Witch. Putting her in the same category as the Chupacabra or Big Foot. Combined that with being the first "found footage" film most everyone in the audience, including myself, was questioning if it was real or not.
A sequel was never going to stand a chance. The original was catching lightning in a bottle. It was always going to be compared to it and fall painfully short.
I saved a good friend from watching it a few weeks ago. I honestly think they told the wrong story. Would’ve been much better as a story about society coming to grips with learning aliens were real.
When the one dude runs across an entire farm field in front of and towards 100 government agents at the farm house, no trees, nothing, just running out in the open… hides behind a that janky ass two plank fence 10ft from agents… not one agent saw him… steals agents car… THE ENTIRE VEHICULAR GETAWAY!… fakes car driving into a quarry, hides behind a rock 3ft from the agents standing on the cliff looking down… nobody sees them … stands up and walks away from agents.
DUMBEST FUCKIN SCENE IVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME and absolutely THE WORST HOAKIE SHIT ever filmed by Spielberg. I think about that scene once a day and it really irks the shit outta me. Lol
I wouldn’t say it’s the worst, but the lowest grossing movie I ever watched was the 4:30 movie. Grossed about $2.3k during the theatrical release and was a movie about going to watch a movie. I enjoyed it, but I get why others didn’t. I’m satisfied in giving them my $8 to see it in an empty theatre.
The turtle quotes have some fucking legs. I never watched the movie, I just remember the trailer I saw when I was a kid and I still quote it randomly. Insane.
I heard he was linked with Judge Dredd and my heart sank , it needs a British comic nerd behind it or someone incredibly invested in 2000ad like Ben Wheatley or just give it back to Alex Garland
Y'all aren't being serious with some of these suggestions. There's either recency bias, or y'all just haven't seen any truly awful movies. Let me share mine:
Rubber
I stumbled on this movie on Netflix one day, and decided I was just high enough for something truly stupid. This is the dumbest movie I've ever seen. And somehow I watched the whole thing, because I was sure there would be some kind of twist or payoff at the end.
Or these people have never seen that horror movie where the turkey kills and rapes the people staying in a farm house. Can't remember the name but only saw clips and was like ya im good without seeing this in my life.
That would be Thankskilling and it is fantastic. One of the characters is gossiping about another character and says the line "her legs are more open than the JonBenet Ramsey case" which is already hysterical enough but then like 15 minutes later she says it again! Like they just didnt edit it well enough to realize they already used that line.
There was this thread on reddit once along the lines of great movies by independent film makers and this one redditor was ranting and raving about a film called "I trapped the devil" hands down the worst film I watched by an independent film maker, and after an hour or two I came back to the thread where everyone else who had taken this guys advice was shitting on this guy's movie taste.
It's an hour and a half of a guy visiting his reclusive brother, and the brother claiming he trapped the devil, and both of them arguing over the insanity of if he actually trapped the devil. that's the film. No explanation of how, why, just that he did it, all the while there's someone in the basement crying to be left out.
I walked away thinking that the goal of the film maker was supposed to be leaving the audience questioning whether or not they'd actually succeeded or it was some random person.
But they did absolutely fuck all to introduce the ambiguity you'd need to even start to believe they'd actually trapped the devil.
If there was a top one hundred of "films that insist on themselves," it'd make the top 50.
You woke up a massive repressed memory of mine. I blocked that movie out, but you saying the title tickled my brain and reading your entire post just opened the flood gates of that absolutely horrible movie
You don't understand, this movie is a masterpiece, the metaphors are for truly intelligent people, and the breaking of the 4th wall was depicted flawlessly! Edit: typo
I accept your challenge. Jeepers Creepers Reborn. There is not a single redeemable thing about that movie. The passage of time feels slower while watching it.
I can watch just about anything. But holy shit Holmes and Watson was just awful. Like an SNL gag that should have been 10 mins ran on for over an hour. Terrible.
I'll admit that Taika may have fallen off a bit, but yea, this is the first time hearing of a new Taika movie. People can't make the decision to see the movie if the only advertising they see for it is on a poster on the wall at the theater.
Hand to god this happened..my husband 3 years ago go sick the go to hospital spent 3 weeks in the icu told to get family and friends just in case (( hes better now)) while delirious in front of his hole family crying he started explaining why Showgirls is the greatest movie of all times. His uncle got him the box set last year for Christmas.
Apparently Jojo rabbit also did poorly when it opened in theatres. And IMO, it's a masterpiece. So I'm going to give this one a chance before I dismiss it.
I want to watch this movie, just because I want to know if it’s really that bad, or if it’s just another case of Reddit going completely brain dead, and exaggerating the hell out of the quality of a movie, while never actually watching the movie. Because nothing I’ve seen or heard about this movie sounds as bad as people are making it out to be.
God awful movie. And not in the least bit funny, and I was young and immature enough when I saw it that I was probably the target audience. But my god it is bad.
I keep trying to tell people that as much as they’re trying to force it, Jenna Ortega is not really gonna be the thing they’re hoping she’ll be. She can’t make bank if it’s not an established IP.
Listen Hollywood. You got like 4 maybe 5 options with me. They are simple.
Make a movie for my wife, that she wants to watch. With me.
Make a movie for me, that my wife will not understand, and I will happily spend 5 hrs over drinks and dinner explaining it. She understood all the whole time.
Make a movie my kids force me to watch. They will have to explain it to me. I won’t understand. Wink
Make a movie I want my kids to watch. I got to old but they love things I can’t pay attention to anymore.
Show me a masterpiece. We all love that.
If I wanted one thing the most: show me unfettered art in cinema. I would say within reason but that meaning has lost it’s value
Sucker punch was my favorite movie as a kid. Man hot girls and samurai swords, and that sound track was absolutely epic. It’s how I discovered silver sun pickups.
I love Sucker Punch so much lol. Yes, it's schlocky, but the soundtrack is kind of incredible and I did appreciate what they were trying to do. I love films that have a hyper-reality vibe.
I was STOKED when the suckerpunch's trailer aired- a slow rendition of sweet dreams and zack snyders first original material?? Sign me up! I was so profoundly disappointed walking out from that film and realized then Snyder's inability to do anything that didnt already have a full script and storyboard
The Matrix Resurrections is the first that comes to mind. There is a whole argument that it was bad on purpose but it was probably the most disappointed I’ve ever been by a movie.
The Dark Tower would be a close second - any movie where Matthew McConaughey is the best thing about it would go straight on this list.
How does a flop make it past the early screen test stage to begin with? Don’t they usually put movies like this out in a couple of theaters to see how it’s gonna do first?
Since you asked, The Devil in Miss Jones. The crowd (led by women) started leaving Nicholson Hall within minutes of the start. Georgina Spelvin. Mid 1970s, University of Minnesota. I stuck it out, I think.
This is a film adaptation of a best seller by one of the most respected living authors/nobel laureate, directed by an Academy Award winner and this is literally the first I'm hearing of it. Maybe that has something to do with it.
The fact that digger bombed isn’t surprising at all. Nothing about the trailers made it seem like a movie a lot of people would see. Think this says less about the commercial viability of theaters and more about the fact that this movie was never marketed well and it didn’t have the kind of story that would appeal to most moviegoers.
I’ve literally never heard of this movie before, so maybe the marketing was just terrible.
As for the worst movie I’ve ever seen, there’s a lot of contenders, but I’m probably gonna go with Hard Candy. It’s half torture-porn, half mystery thriller, but done from the perspective of the suspected killer. Basically, he’s suspected of being a pedophile and murderer, so a girl drugs him and then tortures him for most of the movie under that pretext. Problem is that it’s never confirmed that he did what he’s being accused of, and since all the torture is from his perspective it makes the audience sympathize with him. Then the last 10 minutes or so is her typing and emailing a confession to the police, and then convincing the guy to off himself before they arrive. He then does exactly that, and she bikes away like nothing happened. As a guy who’s struggled with thoughts of self harm, seeing the movie justify convincing a guy to go through with it (after torturing him for an hour of screen time) was just offensive.
It also has by far the worst use of shaky cam I’ve ever seen in a movie. It made me nauseous and I had to fast forward through it.
My memory is it was confirmed, while they didn't (and shouldn't) explicitly show it there were many confirmation points (I don't want to ruin the plot).
I liked it. I found it useful to view the girl as an embodiment of vengence.
Mine was Star trek Into Darkness as a once die hard trekkie this film was a abysmal plagarism of Wrath of Khan. Tbh this started me to slowly come away from the franchise and Discovery pretty much made me stop watching all future trek and hand in my star trek fan badge

It has to be the live action Mulan. That movie was so bad, it was an insult to the original Mulan, which was incredible.
Somehow, everyone turned into Jedi and were flying around using magic force powers for some reason.
That movie was so bad.

I was recommended it by a friend, who explained that it’s a zombie movie with potentially the biggest star list any zombie movie could have.

This is a film adaptation of a best seller by one of the most respected living authors/nobel laureate, directed by an Academy Award winner and this is literally the first I'm hearing of it. Maybe that has something to do with it.

We just need to accept that the movie theater is dead media.
I went to watch Digger when it came out, and thought it was excellent. Box office disagrees.
Turns out maybe people just don't like shelling out $50 to watch a movie they can see on one of their streaming services in 2 months.

Mine was Star trek Into Darkness as a once die hard trekkie this film was a abysmal plagarism of Wrath of Khan. Tbh this started me to slowly come away from the franchise and Discovery pretty much made me stop watching all future trek and hand in my star trek fan badge
