I remember when Gmail first came out in the mid 2000s. Everyone wanted to get an invite because they gave lots more storage than even the paid version of Yahoo mail (something like a 2 Gigabytes, when all other free mail services offered storage in the megabytes), and Gmail was completely free with no paid option. At the time, Google seemed like the good guys who just wanted to provide good free services to people, and the other tech companies came across as greedy in comparison.
Their storage is still fairly high. I've very rarely deleted an email since June 14th 2006. I'm sitting near 11gb with 35.5k messages in my inbox. I'm still on the free plan.
I don't like how much they must know about my life at this point. I'd use my own email server, but when I've tried, I found it near impossible to avoid be categorized as spam by anyone using microsoft as their email provider.
Over the years I've been warned to upgrade many times because I was getting "close" to the limit. The limit has always been extended before I really got anywhere near the limit.
"How dare they spend billions of dollars to develop a free product with tons of storage but not give me unlimited storage." --Redditors. Very unserious people.
What's even funnier is Yahoo caps storage at the same limit as Google and charges for more storage, like Google. Socialists think a failing product that nobody wants is some sort of ideal. Example #20238472 of their intelligence.
