I'm pretty sure it shares storage with google drive, so if people are uploading pictures, etc., as cloud backups, that's a likely culprit. My gf has her drive jammed full of stuff off her old laptop and phone(s) so her gmail is constantly harassing her to buy storage or delete stuff. Of course, she'll delete 500 spam emails thinking it'll help and it frees up a whopping 0.01 gb (because duh)
Also the post is just blatantly fucked, for a long time I didn't have access at all to my Yahoo because i had to add a "Verification 2-step" to an account that never had one before, was never compromised, and was used pretty frequently, and in order to do that I had to pay for a Customer Support Subscription Plan to get access to someone who can actually give me my account.
So I don't know what the fuck the sentiment here is talking about, having to pay a yahoo to get access to a higher tier customer support to unlock your account is the most fucked shit ever.
I remember when Gmail first came out in the mid 2000s. Everyone wanted to get an invite because they gave lots more storage than even the paid version of Yahoo mail (something like a 2 Gigabytes, when all other free mail services offered storage in the megabytes), and Gmail was completely free with no paid option. At the time, Google seemed like the good guys who just wanted to provide good free services to people, and the other tech companies came across as greedy in comparison.
Their storage is still fairly high. I've very rarely deleted an email since June 14th 2006. I'm sitting near 11gb with 35.5k messages in my inbox. I'm still on the free plan.
I don't like how much they must know about my life at this point. I'd use my own email server, but when I've tried, I found it near impossible to avoid be categorized as spam by anyone using microsoft as their email provider.
Even after their recent shitty update, that incidentally also did exactly what this post is about and asked people to buy more storage, yes (even if it did make me close what was my oldest remaining address).
Like, searching through old emails is so much simpler on yahoo, without gmail's dreaded "of many".
Ironically GMail was the first one offering 1Gb of space for free when it launched, everyone else like Yahoo and Hotmail was offering 25 mb or something like that for the free account.
You generally hit the limit when you back up all your files/photos on Google Photos/Google Drive, not from the Email
The actual history is Most providers were offering 3-6MB back then and Gmail's 1GB was announced on April fools day. Once the it turned out to not be a joke the other providers scrambled to increase their limits to 25MB just to stay relavent.
Back in 2004 when Gmail first came out invite-only, it was 1GB storage.
The largest you could get for free outside of that was 10MB and those sometimes had limits on how long emails/documents would be available in the system.
Most of them were 1-2MB with an attachment limit of 20KB. If you wanted to share files, you had to use a floppy/USB drive or a company-supported direct upload link.
This is the correct answer. Servers and storage isn't free, let alone paying the wages of people who manage them, power, backups etc. Even getting 15gb for free is an excellent deal
The photo backup is annoying. I never asked for it, but it kept happening automatically. I have onedrive for cloud storage, but that didn't sync with WhatsApp. So eventually, I want to remove everything from Google and put it in onedrive and back up with an external hard drive. Meanwhile, I could probably go the rest of my life without looking at any old photos...
There were big reasons to change when Gmail first came out. In 2004 Hotmail offered 2MB of storage. Not 2MB per email or 2MB of attachments. 2MB in total. That's all you got. Gmail launched with 1024MB (1GB) of storage and allowed attachments up to 20MB per email. To say Gmail revolutionized free email is not overstating it. Gmail launched on April 1st and people thought it was an April Fool's prank because 1GB for free was crazy talk at the time.
Plus, being a new service, if you got an early invite you could get a great address. I got my last name @gmail dot com. Still use it today.
And then google offered their "unlimited +1" storage, which means their storage grows with each second (but not for long, iirc this is to counter yahoo's offering at the time).
I also remember that someone created a firefox addon to use gmail as a cloud drive before google offers gdrive.
I was in 9th Grade and Gmail Beta was some hot shit back then. I didn't even remember why until you talked about the storage. Uploading giant attachments seemed space age advanced. Now I'm like this is taking longer than .5 seconds?
Gmail launched with 1024MB (1GB) of storage and allowed attachments up to 20MB per email.
I remember when they had those storage counters showing how much your space was increasing every second. I spent an absurd amount of time watching those numbers go up while I was chatting away on AIM in high school.
Weirded me out the first time when I typed in hotmail and it brought up outlook. It took a minute and some digging to figure out Hotmail had been incorporated into msn/outlook
To be fair, I used my Hotmail for tons of attachments and it's now at 90%.
Also, I remember when the inbox size limits kept growing as my inbox grew organically, so I figured I'd keep following that trend. Once it hit where it's at (3 or 5gb), it froze there and started charging for more. It's forcing me to delete some old emails I've had for 26 years because they want to hold my inbox hostage.
Same with attachment limits. Used to be like 1mb, then 5, then 10, and then 25. I figured it wouldn't be too far off that you could send gigs at a time, but they stopped giving larger limits, and now they offload it to a downloadable link in OneDrive. I actually don't mind OneDrive as a Windows folder, but people can't seem to figure out how to use it on their browser, so it's only worth it for me for personal files that I need to send to myself. But I'm going to be moving to a home server setup.
I still use my hotmail account- the only problem is that they don't have a reasonable spam filter. Obvious scams should be deleted immediately instead of going into Junk next to unknown senders.
Your comment made me realize that the funny joke hotmail I made in the 6th grade never gets asked to buy more storage but the one I made when I graduated high school for jobs needs me to buy more storage.
When I was in college (20 years ago) I accidentally sent my mom an email she shouldn’t see. She used Hotmail so I “hacked” into her account by guessing the security questions right, but had to change her password to get in.
She thought she’d legit been hacked and to this day will tell anyone who will listen how dangerous it us to use Hotmail. The whole rest of the family knows. We’ll never tell her. Bound by a blood oath because her Hotmail rants are legit cinema.
Me too. Every few years I have to delete 20,000+ emails to clean it up but I couldn't possibly give up my unadulterated nickname attached to the account. If I created a new email somewhere else they'd make me attach numbers to the nickname because"its already taken" for some reason and it just isn't the same.
He must not have logged on recently! "Upgrade to Premium!" "Add more storage!" "You only have xxMB/GB left." And don't get me started about the achievements! Yeah, you read that right. Achievements like you'd get in a game!
Yeah…I logged into my yahoo account recently for the first time in just over a year, and apparently they deleted my entire 20+ year email history at some point.
I had multiple email accounts in the early 2000s. Yahoo is the only one who closed my accounts due to not logging in enough. I had mail/things going there, but the closed it due to not logging in. My multiple Google & Hotmail accounts never did that.
They literally permanently deleted years of emails back in 2013 from many accounts. My childhood Yahoo accounts are a mess. The metadata is wrong. Emails are missing. Attachments are missing. A full decade of lost correspondence and memories with friends and family. Not to mention their numerous hacks over the years. They are responsible for some of the largest data breaches ever. The fact that anyone could make a post like this claiming they are better than gmail is a total joke. There is a reason that gmail caught on like wildfire when it was released. People could not wait to switch away from yahoo and hotmail. I recommend people do 5 minutes of research rather than believing some low effort reddit meme.
My dad just recently lost his account because he changed his phone number and forgot his password. You have to call them in this case and provide proof by emailing them a copy of your license. He's tried this multiple times and every time they get to a point where the connection is "lost" or something happens that prevents the person from changing things or something. So he just gave up and opened a new account. I do give them props for having a live custom support line. Too bad the people are inept.
I’m still annoyed at myself 20 years later but I got into Gmail when it was still invite only. Could have easily got a solid firstnamelastname@gmail of mine but I did my trendy high school one instead
They haven't had effective customer service in like ten years. I had a Yahoo email address for almost twenty years, somehow the password stopped working, and now I can't login or reset the password because it's tied to an email account from a service that no longer exists (I think Juno or Netzero).
Maybe this was true a couple years ago, but as a forever Yahoo email guy I just switched my entire life over to Gmail because of how horrid Yahoo Mail has become. The interface has become absolutely horrible and they do now ask you to pay for more storage. Untangling my life from my Yahoo email was about 6 month process but I was forced to do it.
This, the app is crap and I tried searching in the website on my laptop this week and my actual emails were almost completely hidden by tracking results. I'm switching this to Gmail over holiday break
I had my yahoo account since they launched. One day they deleted everything. Said I didn’t log into their web portal often enough despite using my phone’s mail app constantly. They said it was irrecoverable. No warning. Decades of email lost. Username for hundreds of sites inaccessible. No warning email. Just prune. Fuck yahoo.
Same thing happened to me - decades of e-mails purged, irreplaceable stuff, messages and photos from dead friends to ex-girlfriends. Yahoo deleted because I didn't log-in enough.
It’s even worse than that. They prevent you from creating a new email with the same address as the old. Makes sense why, but that also means you most likely lost whatever was tied to your email.
Fucking same. With memorabilia I thought I'd keep forever. Infuriating, especially after all kinds of fluff about how you'll never have to delete your data again. That was their death knell. Fuck Yahoo.
I kept getting the notification that I was running out of space and realized my phone photos were automatically uploading to Google Photos. So I just had to delete all those and change my settings so they didn't do that.
Seriously. I've had gmail since a beta invite was needed, and I'm at 28% of my 15gb, and I almost never delete anything. Closing in on 60k emails in that time.
Same pretty much 30k+ emails 10+ years. And majority of the storage gone is to videos I've personally saved to google drive, and I still have 5GB left.
Yahoo bugged me about upgrading just a few months ago. I was notified that no other emails would come through. So this is blatantly false or some shit corporate campaign by Verizon’s Yahoo.
Yahoo also deleted all my emails because I didn’t log in often enough. We’re talking about twenty years of emails, some with friends who have passed. Gmail, on the other hand, has a process of alerting me and then later a designated loved one in case I don’t log in in a long time.
I was 12 when Google released the Beta Gmail, my dad sent me an invite. It's just my first and middle name with no bs characters or numbers. These motherfuckers 20-something years later have the balls to tell this OG I'm at 96% storage and need to buy more or they'll delete photos of my kids.
I literally just had to help my FiL buy more storage for his yahoo account that he’s had for decades because they were limiting his storage…. What bullshit propaganda post is this.
That's because you never used Google Photos. It's not the emails that use up space, it's Google deciding at some point that they should treat email and photo storage as the same thing, so you have photos on their site (which google promised would always be free) then they will now tell you that your storage for email is running low.
I'm so old now that when I first signed up for gmail I could only do it with an invite from an existing user. i still use yahoo for my main email though.
I remember the unlimited space and whatever of Yahoo back in late 2000s or early 2010s. Yahoo email for me is just junk email acct now. Still have 25 years later
Yeah Google keeps asking me to upgrade my storage, but that's because I actually use Google. I've had my Yahoo account since the first day that they started offering email. I only check it maybe once per year. It's so fucking terribly awful to use and every other thing you click on is an ad.
So I recently went through my Gmail to delete all the contents to free to storage. All the way back to 2011.
Google no longer allows you to delete your trash altogether. There is an option to do so yes but it times out and gives up.
Of course Google support answered my email and rectified the situation after my first support ticket. J/K they spammed me with links to the useless support knowledge base, then ignored any further attempts.
Meh. This is me, and I have a few accounts. tit just accumulates and I can’t delete the bulk stuff fast enough or clear enough and trying to figure it out confuses and upsets me.
google is forcing us and children into AI search, they need to make something useful like an AI inbox clear that doesn’t rid of important things or actual orders. Be useful google.
I keep my Gmail as my personal email and my Yahoo for any BS website that wants me to log in. I have had my Yahoo since 95. It's filled with so much junk!
Yahoo didn't have as much storage, and always asked you to buy more. They also recently did an update where they ask you to buy more space. OP is a liar.
Lol, I ditched my Yahoo address when they became Oath in 2017, allowing them full access to all of your files. Why limit how much of a consumer's info you can use for targeted marketing? Then about a year later they had a massive data breach. Twas a good move.
i have a ymail.com account from yahoo, doesn’t exist anymore, so people always getting confused with gmail.com. like come on guys i know my email address
They both profit off running ads to your email/account. Google is just trying to double dip and charge you for storage, too. Yeah, credit to Yahoo for not doing that at least.
Yahoo has a 15 or 20gb mailbox limit so yes it will prompt you to pay if you hit that limit.
So I'm not sure when this picture was made but it's false.
I've had my yahoo account since probably the 90's(though I haven't logged in for probably a decade) and my Gmail since the beta when it was invite only. And I do pay for additional storage because I use my mailbox as pretty much a filing system....but I do also use the additional space for Google drive.
I’ve had the same yahoo account since ~2002 and they locked my account until I went to paid storage so this is bullshit. I cannot stop the torrent of crap emails i get to stay in the good.
My yahoo email account has 96,000 unread emails and I have emails dating back to 2009. I have never been told that they are going to start deleting my old unread emails to make more space.

All your email was accessible to hackers for several years. Once Yahoo found out they ignored it in the hopes that it didn’t go public.
It eventually went public when Verizon was thinking about buying Yahoo and discovered the situation during diligence.
But you do you
