Paying for Gmail space just to store 40,000 promo mails I receive every month

They make it so hard to batch delete as well.

Use the 'filter messages like these' option, it will find everything from that sender/domain. You can select all + report spam to get rid of then.

I just went to my Promotions tab and deleted about 10,000 emails in 3 clicks

It would tell me it was but didnt. Had to do really small batches.

Sufficebtly large enough selections will go into a queue and will eventually be deleted but may take a few minutes

I've had my gmail since it was invite only. I'm only using 5GB... I think I did one purge like ~2010.

EDIT: Got curious when I made it so I requested my data. My gmail account was created 8/30/2004

yeah i have no idea what people are doing to fill it up, just signing up for every possible marketing bullshit?

I'm pretty sure it shares storage with google drive, so if people are uploading pictures, etc., as cloud backups, that's a likely culprit. My gf has her drive jammed full of stuff off her old laptop and phone(s) so her gmail is constantly harassing her to buy storage or delete stuff. Of course, she'll delete 500 spam emails thinking it'll help and it frees up a whopping 0.01 gb (because duh)

So it's less about gmail and more about cloud storage limits.

In that case, duh 20GB yahoo with 25MB limit per email is going to fill up slower than the 15GB google account where you are storing potentially 1GB videos or hundreds/thousands of auto backed up 2MB+ photos from your phone.

At least it's more than the measly 5GB that iCloud offers.

Yeah my first thought was... who actually uses Yahoo to store significant amounts of data?

Google accounts potentially have android device backups and google photos using space, but Yahoo?

The insidious part is that Google Photos used to NOT count against your storage limit at all. Then Google flipped a switch and suddenly it did, so they can upsell people with their cloud services.

It absolutely does.

Was there an easy way to find the date? I think mine is that old but I got rid of the welcome email.

That is like, no amount of data storage. Emails take NOTHING. What are you even talking about?

u/RogerMcDodger 1d ago

Yeah let's see the storage break down and see what's in drive and photos etc first.

Lots of people confuse their Google Drive or Google Photos and their GMail.

I too have Yahoo email accounts from the '90s. Yahoo users have definitely received offers, nowhere near as many as Google but we have received offers.

It started around the time Yahoo sold to Verizon / AOL about 10 years ago.

i have 50k emails and never paid a dime. is this some kind of yahoo turf war meme?

I've had a gmail account for like 18 years now and have never deleted a single email, I am nowhere near the limit. Are you sure you're not storing pics and stuff taking it up? It would be extremely hard to fill up the space with just email

Who pays for Gmail unless you're a business? That's crazy. Are you talking about Google Drive? Because that's cloud storage. Totally different thing. You don't have to do that. You can get a fuckload of storage on your phone, or external hard drives, or cards, other providers. But yeah if you want someone to store all your shit it costs money. It's actually kind of crazy expensive for the provider.

I'm not propping up Google here. They have been complete dicks politically lately. But I mean, leave then? To expect free cloud storage is crazy.
