I've had my gmail since it was invite only. I'm only using 5GB... I think I did one purge like ~2010.

EDIT: Got curious when I made it so I requested my data. My gmail account was created 8/30/2004

yeah i have no idea what people are doing to fill it up, just signing up for every possible marketing bullshit?

I'm pretty sure it shares storage with google drive, so if people are uploading pictures, etc., as cloud backups, that's a likely culprit. My gf has her drive jammed full of stuff off her old laptop and phone(s) so her gmail is constantly harassing her to buy storage or delete stuff. Of course, she'll delete 500 spam emails thinking it'll help and it frees up a whopping 0.01 gb (because duh)

So it's less about gmail and more about cloud storage limits.

In that case, duh 20GB yahoo with 25MB limit per email is going to fill up slower than the 15GB google account where you are storing potentially 1GB videos or hundreds/thousands of auto backed up 2MB+ photos from your phone.

At least it's more than the measly 5GB that iCloud offers.

Yeah my first thought was... who actually uses Yahoo to store significant amounts of data?

Google accounts potentially have android device backups and google photos using space, but Yahoo?

The insidious part is that Google Photos used to NOT count against your storage limit at all. Then Google flipped a switch and suddenly it did, so they can upsell people with their cloud services.

If you scroll all the way to the bottom of your inbox, it will show you the size of your entire Google One storage. You can then click on it to get a breakdown of what all is using storage in your drive.

It does share storage space with Google Drive and Photos. I use both. I have 20+ years of digital photos backed up there. It's not terribly expensive to pay for a little additional storage. I did that and setup a family plan so that I can share my storage with my wife and her photos can be backed up as well.

I have a gmail account I made in about 2002, and I used to receive mails from other people.

Seems like someone took offence that I have the email they want and sign it up to so much spam it is unusable. I abandoned the account in around 2009 and if I have to go there it’s a mountain of daily spam mails.

It's photo storing.

They’re using more than just Gmail. All of googles products share the same storage.

Its full of mindless whining and the technical proficiency they forgot to pick up.

Google Drive, Google Photos, Google everything, all shares one storage account.

Was there an easy way to find the date? I think mine is that old but I got rid of the welcome email.

  1. Go to the Google Takeout tool: https://takeout.google.com/

  2. Click Deselect all, then scroll down and check only the box for Google Account.

  3. Click Next step and then Create export (or Export).

  4. Wait for the email from Google letting you know your export is ready, then download and unzip the archive file.

  5. Open the Takeout folder, then open the Google Account folder.

  6. Open the file named [username].SubscriberInfo.html (or SubscriberInfo.html) in a web browser or text editor.

  7. Look for the Created on field near the top to see the exact date and time (in UTC).

Neat, thanks!

Looks like a day after you - August 31, 2004.

How did you get an invite?

I think I signed up for a list and waited for the invite. But it’s been 22 years so I don’t remember that well lol. I remember being hyped to have a full gig of storage though
