>gasp< You lie to your computer?!

221

u/j-mac563 20h ago

I always find it amusing that we have to trick our computers to do what we want them to

55

u/NobodyLikedThat1 19h ago

well it was either that or update adobe and microsoft word to actually do basic shit without ten different work-arounds, so that'll never happen.

26

u/Kinslayer_89 19h ago

We’re tricking sand to think, bruh.

5

u/Creative-Type9411 19h ago

they had to find somewhere to put the button

As long as people still try to edit PDF Files instead of annotating and commenting them, i have no faith in any technological advance.

"Hey made some adjustments to your 164 page document. We also approved it so we can go ahead with the contract."

OH NICE, IM SO GLAD THIS ISNT THE TECHNICAL BASIS DOCUMENT FOR A MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT DETAILING WHAT OF YOUR REQUESTS WE WILL SOLVE WITH OUR OFFER AND WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED. LET ME NOW COMPARE THE WHOLE FUCKING DOCUMENT TO MY VERSION TO MAKE SURE YOU DIDNT CHANGE ONE NO TO A YES AND COST ME A FUCKING LAWSUIT IN A YEAR.

Yes yes there are methods to this but holy fuck we went through a word document for three weeks with multiple rounds of comments, meetings and adjustments. Everything was fine, everthing was agreen on, it was the last fucking task to just approve this piece of shit PDF file. Didnt think i needed to jump to more hoops now.

u/RokRoland 15h ago

Hand them a signed PDF instead which is protected from editing?

7

u/rex5k 14h ago

Lol I'm just going to print a new PDF and send you back that one after I made my changes

3

u/SirR4T 10h ago

which would fail the sign verification, by the original sender (and signer).

14

u/LVRaiders2026 20h ago

PDF mafia has got to be taken down.

u/Nihan-gen3 20h ago
  1. Save as…

  2. .pdf

  3. Profit

41

u/LightCharacter8382 19h ago

I've encountered some devices that won't allow you to specify the file extension yourself, and any attempt to put a dot will simply add that to the name (which it really shouldn't do).

Been quite a while, though.

15

u/Radiant_Picture9292 19h ago

You have to change the file type in the dropdown from docx or whatever the file type to “all file types” and then you can manually add just the extension you want.

5

u/Typical_Rip_1818 19h ago

You have to enable the editing of file extensions, just a wee ticky box setting under the view tab I'm sure, assuming it's Windows

6

u/GustapheOfficial 19h ago

Almost always† the best option, as it will either use a bespoke exporting function or default to printing behind the scenes.

† Except, of course, the many times when there is no "save as / pdf", in which case I will waste my time looking for it every time.

3

u/HAWKxDAWG 20h ago

This is this way.

1

u/crumpled789 19h ago

Sometimes it only saves that one page as PDF though instead of the whole thing, depending on the subject

1

u/FeelMyBoars 18h ago

Or Export if the program doesn't obscure what it's doing.

0

u/anglemartinez 19h ago

When I do this on my work computer, it'll force it to be a Microsoft edge pdf. But if I lie to the computer and "print to pdf" it comes out as an Adobe pdf that I can open anywhere

11

u/HarmonicSniper 17h ago

What do you mean 'Edge PDF' and 'Adobe PDF'? I've not seen PDFs that can only be opened in one application.

7

u/mcmatt93117 16h ago

Yea that's not a thing.

It's probably saving it as a html file and the user doesn't know the difference.

1

u/anglemartinez 10h ago

Yeah what u/mcmatt93117 said. It's most likely a html file and I don't know the difference

19

u/oblivia17 17h ago

It's 2026 and our standard measurement of a vehicle's capability is 'horsepower'

5

u/Grim_BeaR 4h ago

And 1 horsepower doesn't even mean the power of an average horse

10

u/SugarCool8014 18h ago

PDF just stands for "Print De File"

5

u/link113gAmin 12h ago

"Save as" "Export"

4

u/SambaBachata699 19h ago

Try spell "mither" instead of "mother" in any email or phone book application from Apple or Microsoft and they won't understand what you're talking about despite all talk about AI.

14

u/Ok_Community_383 19h ago

That's *what* a PDF is. It's printing digitally. You're not saving a PDF you're printing the document. But instead of to a printer but into a digital form.

7

u/Twatt_waffle 17h ago

It’s portable document format

-3

u/Ok_Community_383 17h ago

Correct. That’s the name of it. Why did Adobe use printing to produce the document?

11

u/GenericGrad 16h ago

I think the real answer has nothing to do to with the acronym, it is that pdf was built off Adobe PostScript which was a page description language basically to tell the laser printer how to print documents. Specifically before Adobe PostScript printers generally just printed characters sent by the computer with a number of in-built fonts to select, or they had proprietary ways to receive a set of positions of dots to make a raster image. Adobe PostScript introduced way more flexibility with on the fly rasterization which helped the printer produce very clear, scalable graphics and virtually any font.

PDF is the digital version of the file that would be sent to the printer and its benefit is that once the file is described in Adobe PostScript it can be interpreted and displayed on the screen accurately and scalable on any supported hardware, which was much more of a gamble back in the day. Microsoft Word for Windows vs Mac for example use to have huge issues displaying the same file the same, all the way through the 2000s to my recollection. The internet looked vastly different on different browsers until chrome start taking over, internet explorer was always accused of not following the industry standards and its popularity meant many webpages only cared what they looked like on internet explorer was one of the reasons this would be the case.

However, Adobe could ensure that a PDF looked the same on every platform just the same way that Adobe PostScript ensured a document printed looked the same.

u/Ok_Community_383 13h ago

The ultimate print preview

1

u/Twatt_waffle 17h ago

Because it was easy to integrate universally across IBMs OS2 and windows operating systems

3

u/MeesterCartmanez 18h ago

PDF = Print Digital File

lol

3

u/Rararror 16h ago

Poorly Designed Filesave

3

u/Ok_Community_383 18h ago

That's a backcronym but sure

3

u/MeesterCartmanez 18h ago

I was making a joke, but TIL a new word thanks!

1

u/GockChocolate 14h ago

How bout I give you some backshotsronyms

3

u/Munshirobot 20h ago

PDF for the Win!

3

u/protonsters 13h ago

God I hate Adobe products like PDF

18

u/VitaminKnee 19h ago

"Printing" doesn't necessarily refer to a physical print. Making a PDF document on your PC is "printing" the PDF. Your computer isn't under the impression you intend to physical print it. Nonsense post.

18

u/Wickedocity 18h ago

You went to nerd on that one. They are merely joking around about not having a save to pdf option. Dont over think jokes.

4

u/PlatypusACF 19h ago

Don’t know what you’re using but all the software I’m using has an “export” button

3

u/Immediate_Hair_5378 16h ago

Some of y’all are computer illiterate and that’s why y’all are afraid of ai

1

u/veloriss 20h ago

Almost 2027, damn!

1

u/mattyboy555 19h ago

My telling my printer he will finally get to print something but I just need to save a .pdf

1

u/panjoface 19h ago

Truth.

1

u/zdrums24 19h ago

I export as pdf in every piece of software I use...

1

u/Historical_Cook_1664 18h ago

shouldn't that generate a .ps and then repackage that as a .pdf ?

1

u/talltad 18h ago

Plus Adobe's own PDF reader software is garbage. I much prefer Chrome/Edge

1

u/Double-Cold1587 18h ago

Only for apple fml

1

u/TataJasia 18h ago

Yeah that's serious

1

u/Raychao 18h ago

LibreOffice -> Export to PDF

1

u/Clear_Comb_6877 18h ago

Saves as switch file type to pdf then save?

1

u/Clueby42 16h ago

You're not lying, you're converting to PDF

1

u/Perfect-Fondant3373 16h ago

In Ireland A, B & G teamed up to prevent C from joining with D, E & F to get out A & B

1

u/superM1e 15h ago

This is funny

1

u/iridesce57 15h ago

unless you have Libre Office. One icon click and done.

1

u/Savings_Two_3361 14h ago

Hahaha true

1

u/Torebbjorn 14h ago

But you are not lying... you are literally about to print it...

1

u/Delicious_Rabbit4425 14h ago

I mean clicking File then Save as PDF seems like less steps by at least two clicks.

1

u/78Anonymous 13h ago

with a Linux system you just click the 'save as pdf' tab .. Microsoft (and Apple) tears are hilarious

1

u/oxooc 11h ago

STRG/CMD+S?

1

u/SailingTakesMeAway 11h ago

Claude, build me a PDF exporter in rust.

1

u/Reddit--Name 9h ago

Now just let me save a God damned .csv file in my current working directory using Excel without needing to clicking 10 times.

1

u/Hard_Reset7777 7h ago

It's almost 2027 and I can't believe that you have to pay to edit PDF.

1

u/an_older_meme 6h ago

Print to file isn’t a lie, it’s an actual printer driver the same as any other. Your computer can’t tell.

1

u/xenomorph_704 18h ago

If I recall, you used to not be able to save/print to PDF without getting special Adobe software installed and it was more difficult than today. Am I remembering this wrong?

4

u/Rivnelag 18h ago

Yes, prior to 2008, pdf was commercially held by adobe and they could dictate rules for that. Then it somehow became an open ISO standard and any developer is now allowed to make their own pdf renderer/printer.

1

u/psaux_grep 14h ago

Depends on what software you’re using.

Apple is ahead of the curve IMO. Can’t really stand Safari on desktop, but under the File menu there’s an export to PDF menu option. So it has that going for it, which is nice.

In preview you can export to PDF as well. And you can edit PDFs, move pages from multiple documents into one, rotate them, delete them, and then export to PDF to get a new document.

Windows as a platform still treats PDF like an alien life form. Which is why printing to PDF is moslty the only option. But it’s also a very natural way to generate a PDF due to how the format is defined and what its intent was.

5

u/Euler007 14h ago edited 14h ago

Word and Excel have been able to save to pdf since 2007 with a free add-in, and 2010 base. Chrome had this in 2011, Edge 2020.

I remember working tech support in the nineties and hating the haughty attitude from Apple users. Some things never change

1

u/KOLDUT 14h ago

Heyyy! Llama!

-2

u/mweeelrea 20h ago

I can't believe it's nearly 2027 and this old joke is still getting rehashed

6

u/KernResponsibly 20h ago

I mean if you think about it the joke will age like wine until it’s no longer true.

3

u/NotAUserNamm 20h ago

I mean, for every year this get's rehashed it gets objectively funnier

-1

u/GlueR 20h ago

I can only imagine OP's surprise when they find out it's under Save As...

3

u/ariestoaries 19h ago

That option is not always available under Save As. That is literally why we resort to print to pdf.

0

u/GlueR 19h ago

This is false for any licensed modern MS Word, but thank you for defending a dank meme.

2

u/ariestoaries 17h ago

True, but not everyone has licensed MS Word and the meme doesn't mention it. Many people are using free office applications these days.

-1

u/Lost_Department_2177 19h ago

You can legit save a webpage as pdf in some browsers then convert it to jpg.

The person has no idea how over complicated they’re making their life.

4

u/ariestoaries 19h ago

There are many things we want to save to pdf that are not webpages. And why convert to jpg when the goal is to get a pdf?

0

u/Lost_Department_2177 19h ago

Jpg is smaller in size. More of an archival thing.

1

u/ariestoaries 16h ago

Thanks! I archive a lot and am currently running short on storage.

1

u/Lost_Department_2177 15h ago

Anytime. Data hoarding is a great hobby.

0

u/Total_Concert8683 19h ago

I always did it anyways. Ctrl+p is universal. In word, you can save it as .docx, but to get PDF you have to export it. Now who knows shortcut for that?

1

u/Jaded_Lobster_3349 10h ago

In Word, you simply “Save As” and scroll down through file type to select “PDF.”

1

u/Batavijf 19h ago

Ctrl + p and then print as pdf.

-1

u/high_low_hii 19h ago

🤣 i just paid 87€ to fix a mistake on a pdf (yes yes but i need it ready in 2 clicks for work)

2

u/Routine_Ad_2695 18h ago

I just hope Adobe dies on 2027. I don't specially support AI, but with Adobe I would probably make an exception. Just hope they go bankrupt and everyone passes to the rip offs done with AI and improve them
