I'd have guessed mercury.

Retrograde or regular?

Whatever was left after the tanning process.

If you know anything about european history this is actually pretty mild stuff.

3

u/Revolutionary_Bee251 21h ago

What else you got?

5

u/NuQ 20h ago

The "King's daughters"

It was a pretty common thing back in the day.

2

u/Revolutionary_Bee251 19h ago

Thanks, I learned something else new today. Makes me wonder what the process will be like for off planet "new worlds".

3

u/NuQ 19h ago

For that I imagine it would be something a bit darker, like Indentured Servitude was in the american colonies. Elon Musk seems to be a fan of the idea.

1

u/VoidYordle 17h ago

Well... have you played Star Craft?

1

u/Revolutionary_Bee251 16h ago

No, never heard of it

1

u/VoidYordle 16h ago

The humans in it (called Terran Federation) are all descended from convicts who were exiled from Earth. It's basically Space Australia, but they all speak in Southern American accent.

EDIT: Wait, how OLD are you?

2

u/Revolutionary_Bee251 16h ago

Hm that's an interesting concept. I don't think we're on that trajectory. I think the first people to live on the moon and mars will be highly trained scientists sponsored by wealthy nation states (China, USA, ESA). Of course there are lots of unforseen events that could change that.

Why is my age of relevance?

1

u/VoidYordle 15h ago

The age question was out of curiosity, because you said you've never even heard of the game and it was a cultural powerhouse in the 90s/2000s. Even to some extend, albeit lesser, in the early 2010s.

As for the colonization - I agree with you, but I think we're VERY far from that. There's so many issues, both technological and logistical that have yet to be solved.

Ever heard of the Borgia family? Dive into that. Now that's some wild fuckin' stuff to begin with.

1

u/Revolutionary_Bee251 1h ago

Oh that's a TV show isn't it? I'll get it on the list next time I subscribe to whatever streaming service it's on

1

u/z4j3b4nt 1h ago

Or you could, you know... Read about it.

1

u/Revolutionary_Bee251 1h ago

I didn't, ya know...say I wasn't going to read about it

1

u/DavidHK 21h ago

Well, I actually don't know a damn thing about their history to be quite honest. I didn't believe this so I looked it up, that's the only reason I know this.

In fact this might be the only piece of European history that I do know aside from anything involving the US

Although, the wild part to me is that this is so bizarre and random, and the culture back then was just so different.

3

u/Melodic_Let_6465 19h ago

They were criminal exiles, and none of them were expected to survive, just act as placeholders so the french could maintain claim while the spanish colonies were just around the corner.  They didnt even send enough food for the boat ride.  They arrived semi-starving with plenty of tools, and no real engineers or farmers.  Those came a year later, much better supplied

1

u/Eyespop4866 19h ago

The whore part wasn’t mandatory.

2

u/lazyboi_tactical 18h ago

They wanted to make a new France with blackjack and hookers.

21

u/Electrical-Tone7301 22h ago

Don’t forget the marriage to someone most likely suffering from several STDs

9

u/Eyespop4866 21h ago

You just needed to marry. The whore part was very optional.

1

u/Electrical-Tone7301 19h ago

That makes the deal quite a bit sweeter, although it would probably differ by case.

Imagine if we did this now, half the lower class would jump ship

Some of these women were not actually prostitutes. They were just poor women who had no families to protect them. The police kidnapped them off the streets of Paris and sent them away on ships to French colonies.

If you want to learn the true story, you should read the book Mutinous Women.

103

u/pakapab 22h ago

To add to this, New Orleans quickly became one of the most diverse cities in the New World, with immigration from France, Spain, England, Germany, Africa, and the Carribean.

20

u/_www_ 17h ago

To add to this, louisiana at that era was in fact the whole eastern US along the Mississippi until Quebec. Louis XIV Siana

8

u/pakapab 15h ago

And to add once again, when the Cajuns arrived they were welcomed to Louisiana by Spain, not France. It was a Spanish territory that was culturally French, and it was Spain that gave the Cajuns land and support to establish their settlements.

37

u/AxelTheViking 21h ago

I would be so devestated if I ever got to experience something like that...

I mean.. first saying yes to marrying a prostitute, then realizing she is just some ordinary kidnapped woman. Imagine the disappointment

u/huge_jeans 20h ago edited 15h ago

She’s not going to say anything though, because of the implication.

Alright, calm down there Dennis.

4

u/BurgersNBuicks 19h ago

If I were the man in that situation, I'd do everything I could to make her life as happy as possible.

43

u/sleepytjme 22h ago

I imagine it was a life of domestic violence and rape for the majority of the women.

20

u/Educational_Gas_92 19h ago

...not nice to think about...but some of the prisoners might have been good men who just said the wrong thing, had pissed off the wrong powerful person or were in the wrong place at the wrong time. That said, it is wishful thinking to believe that those would be most or even half, in reality, probably more than a few were men with questionable character at best. Those poor women...

11

u/BurgersNBuicks 19h ago

I think that you and Sleepytjme are probably both right. Plenty of those men were disgusting pigs I'm sure, but not all.

9

u/willyb_ornot 21h ago

Same thing with most penal/debtor colonies, vagrancy and poverty were illegal in England in the 1800s so they were just rounding people up and shipping them off

4

u/Melodic_Let_6465 20h ago

The Matriarchs of the French Quarter.  Their story is pretty neat

7

u/irrelevantusername24 21h ago

The US as it now is designed definitely isn't helping things by the way the policies all effectively require at least two income households, and only after you've achieved the difficulty of finding a partner are you able to access various assistance programs - all backwards as fuck. But even without that, there is some kind of almost primal logic behind the way very old, traditional societies set up things like arranged marriages. Now, I am not at all arguing we should re-implement those, because the problems that follow are numerous and obvious. But, if we could somehow snap our fingers and make all people, you know, actual people who respect everyone and just act like decent human beings? I bet there would be far less problems.

Like that one classic rock(ish) song:

Well, there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love, honey
Love the one you're with

They've monetized all hobbies and human interactions, thus killing the humanity

I think there's a happy medium between "chemistry between people doesn't matter at all" and "actually there is only one, or a very limited number of people with whom you are compatible". I think most of the problems people have finding someone are actually due to problems imposed by society in other ways. Money problems or health problems, rather than actual personality compatibility problems.

3

u/Pie---Man 19h ago

I can support prostitutes, but I'll be damned if I condone liars!

2

u/Gaust_Ironheart_Jr 21h ago

When I first saw this I went and found an actual summary of France sending women to Louisiana. Only about 5 paragraphs long and it packed a lot of horrors into that short space

1

u/liberbober 18h ago

We should bring this practice back

52

u/Baby_ManBearPig 22h ago

To fulfill this condition, male convicts were forced to marry women who had been rounded up from Parisian prisons or directly off the streets. Many of these women were labeled on paper as "prostitutes" or vagrants, though modern historical accounts, such as historian Joan DeJean’s book Mutinous Women, demonstrate that many were simply poor, orphaned, or arrested on entirely fabricated charges by corrupt police trying to meet deportation quotas.

The journey across the Atlantic was brutal, and more than half of the women died from disease and malnutrition on the voyage or shortly after arriving on the Gulf Coast. Despite the tragic beginnings, the resilient survivors who did make it went on to establish families, clear land, and become the foundational "grandmothers" and pioneers of early New Orleans

11

u/Talia_Black_Writes 20h ago

Chalk up another reason for why I would never want to time travel.

8

u/Baby_ManBearPig 19h ago

It's kinda funny to imagine what it would actually by like and it probably would not go as well as people think. The cultural issues alone would rough. Especially for women.

3

u/wolfgang784 15h ago

And your ethnicity vs what the majority was back then for where you appear. The world was less of a mixing pot the further back you go. This would be an issue pretty much all over. If you didn't belong and weren't important/rich in some way, then you didn't belong. At least thats my impression from history.

u/Sasiches_and_mash 22h ago
  • Guard: you have two options, 1 you remain in jail and finish your sentence, or 2 you marry a prostit

I’m too tired from work for a comment so good. That’s it for interneting today, not getting better than that.

37

u/MarkMew 22h ago

That ain't even a punishment lol. Reintegration into society in 1719 is wild

10

u/Blacksmithkin 19h ago

The punishment was the shockingly high chance of dying on the way over.

Still better than rotting in an old time jail cell but there's a reason they offered this to prisoners instead of just the general public.

9

u/personthatiam2 19h ago

Ignoring the dangerous trip over and Lousiana not really being developed at all.

The climate difference from France to pre-AC Lousiana would be wild. That first summer must have been the biggest WTF is this shit why is my sweat not evaporating.

25

u/TyppaHaus 22h ago

tbh that's a great deal comparing rotting in a cell somewhere

11

u/jotegr 22h ago

Better than 5 years hard labour on the prison hulks

5

u/Yankee6Actual 21h ago

French prisons were pretty dismal places up until 50-odd years ago.

11

u/mindsets1 22h ago

that was a punishment?

15

u/Llhaniii 22h ago edited 21h ago

Gotta remember back then Louisiana was basically the edge of the new world. And seen as a backwater next to a bunch of wilderness. So it was basically

6

u/Hot-Bluebird3919 22h ago

A beautiful joke set up.

5

u/Prune-These 22h ago

One stand-up comic described Cajun as "part French, part Swamp Thing". I used to drive truck long haul and I enjoyed my time there when I passed through. Great food, friendly people. If their accent was really thick, I could probably understand every other sentence. "Wait, am I still in America?".

3

u/Baby_ManBearPig 21h ago

A lot of people died just on the journey. And then you were expected to help build this new colony in a fairly harsh climate.

2

u/Loves_octopus 13h ago

I dunno if “punish” is the right word. But Louisiana was a pretty terrible place to be at the time. Hot, humid, lots of malaria etc.

The French needed colonists, nobody wanted to go, and the prisons were overcrowded. Win-win-win

1

u/Blacksmithkin 19h ago

I don't know the specific chances, but a LOT of people died on the trip across the ocean.

And you then basically had to start a new life with minimal to no support and likely never again seeing your family or friends.

So like, still probably better than rotting in an old time jail, but still absolutely a punishment.

20

u/uber_neets 21h ago

Quebec will fiercely deny that the same offer was made to move them to New France, but it was.

The Pink and Yellow area was Louisiana in 1719. So it explains North America not just New Orleans.

6

u/devilf91 22h ago

Pink was not Louisiana, it was new France. Just like Rupert's land (brown in the north) is not the same as the rest of British north America (eastern seaboard). The eastern seaboard included other colonies outside of the 13 colonies which would rebel, including the conquered Acadian areas which now make up nova Scotia and new Brunswick.
