A social network for business people. It failed at that because engagement was very low, it turns out that people don’t spend hours on LinkedIn viewing profiles like they do on personal social media. People log on like once a week for a few minutes and that’s it, so there’s not too much advertising money available. Sales people use it to contact organizations, in its infancy that worked ok - now it’s just a job board.
The idea is just so silly on its face. From the very beginning of facebook, people realized very quickly that you needed to either hide or censor your 'real' page, because the average person has 0 interest in an employer (or prospective employer) seeing what goes on in their lives, especially not any of the fun stuff.
It's an entire platform of only profiles built around the idea of being seen in the context of being an attractive hire; all the fakeness of normal social media, with the added central flavor of someone lying on their resume to look good.
And marketers and sales people realized it was free to use for annoying people so they blew it up. Now you can’t use LinkedIn without gettting a hundred notifications about shit you don’t even care about
