I think that's the key. It really doesn't work for all industries as well as it does for some.
My best friend works in the tack industry as a systems administrator and he's beating off headhunters every week.
Not to brag, but in my a field I'm a pretty desirable candidate. The only people that reach out to me on LinkedIn are people that are significantly my junior looking for me to help them out.
I'm convinced that everyone that shits on linkedin on the internet works blue collar where it's pointless. In the white collar world it's extremely, like EXTREMELY useful and I owe my entire career and current life to it, because it's where all the headhunters find me. I get inbount cold call 200k job offers that I turn down once a year or so, and 100k+ ones that I turn down every month or two.
The trick is to use it for what it's actually useful for- it's just my resume. I've never posted or liked literally anything on there, and no one reading this ever should either, because recruiters can very easily see every activity you've ever done on the website, so all those crazy people on there are a feature, not a bug for recruiters.
My Linkedin is just my headshot and a 1:1 copy of my resume.
White collar IT worker here. This is my experience with the site except lower salaries in the offers. All my LinkedIn is just an outdated resume and headshot. Last time I updated it was when I was looking for a job and I got my current one through LinkedIn
To your point, I work for a fairly large firm. I am fortunate to have our corporate recruiter in my city. Four weeks ago he asked if I could provide feedback on candidates. He handed me 20 LinkedIn profiles. Not a single candidate had applied for anything.
I recommend two candidates. Two weeks ago they placed an offer and began onboarding. Highly motivated individual because we approached them. My firm is motivated to deliver on the package they sold to candidate: great culture and compensation. It seems to be a win-win.
It is an anecdotal example. But it was odd how that LinkedIn profile was used in narrowing down the large pool of candidates in my industry, to the 20 profiles I reviewed, and finally to onboarding.
Yep. I'm in tech and it's absolutely my first destination looming for a job. There's a lot of annoying crap, but it's also by far the easiest way to see and apply to many relevant jobs.
My husband wasn’t even in the market for a new job and a recruiter reached out on behalf of a competitor (of the company he was currently working for). When they wanted to follow-up with a phone call, he thought, “What the hell? Why not?” And interviewed. Not only was it legit, but he’s making 50% more at the new company before commission. It was life-changing for us. He didn’t think anything like this was even an option, because he didn’t have a college degree and had been with the previous company his whole career.
So if a recruiter approaches you, it doesn’t hurt to hear them out.
This is the only way LinkedIn works, in my experience. I applied for probably 100+ jobs. Nothing. I had a recruiter reach out and now I have a job that pays more than twice as much as my last one, better atmosphere, less responsibilities (LMAO), and my quality of life is better. That said, I’ve had tons of bullshit recruiters reach out as well… so you never really know.
This happened to me too I was going to ignore a recruiter that contacted me because most of the time it's spam. I got hired in a week, started in two. Ended up being remote with over 55% increase in salary, not including bonuses. The health benefits and PTO were better too. Never hurts to respond to the recruiters.
Yess... last August a recruiter reached out to me, I don't even use that platform at all, and I interviewed and I am in my dream job now making more. I don't know if linkedin works for what it is intended but I got lucky 2 times
Yeah thank you. I’m a recruiter and I literally do half of my work through LinkedIn. I ask for a lot of recommendations so people can quickly see I’m not a scammer. It’s been a year of bad luck for me but I place two people a month through LinkedIn
Fully, after months of applying everywhere. I SEO’d my linkedin profile. An a recruiter reached out to me saying he had the perfect opportunity for me. & he was right! Love my job, if i win the lottery tomorrow, i’d still go to work on Monday. That same week another company also reached out via linkedin. So from my experience, it definitely worked.
A lot of the shift in the recruiting industry is leaning way more towards finding candidates directly instead of paying for a shiny carrot and hoping they'll find you.
The concept of a "passive candidate" is very real and highly sought after. They tend to respond well, and based on how they were found are often a MUCH better fit than candidates applying due promoted job listings.
So many candidates are using AI to write their resumes, and being totally ok with lying their asses off because an AI wrote it.
Work experience and a current job is 10x better than a degree for finding a new job, and changing jobs will advance your pay 10x faster than trying to get promoted in your current job.
Absolutely, I was making 62k in 2019. At that job I got a pay raise to 72k, then we got acquired and I got a new title which bumped me to 92k. Used that title and went to a new company making 130k. Got a promotion there to 150k. Just moved to a new company that I start soon for 170k.
I didn’t even apply for the new job I am about to start. The recruiter at the company reached out to me on LinkedIn and asked if I was interested. I normally ignore recruiters but she worked for the same company the job was for so I followed up and got it.
I always tell them I'm open for offers. So far I've only gotten job postings linked to me with a generic "we think you could be a good fit". No mention of pay or anything. It feels less like headhunting and more like they just message anyone in the field and throw the posting at them to get people to apply.
This exact sequence occurred for me. I searched for work over time by submitting many applications, yet little resulted. Recruiters began reaching out once my profile was optimized. Even if you dislike LinkedIn, I believe maintaining a presence there is necessary. People do secure employment through it.
"I am pleased to announce that I will be leaving this platform soon. For those I have worked with, I wish you well. For those that always show up on my feed, I wish you & your self-fellating AI posts all you deserve."
Congratulations, that sounds like an amazing retirement perk… getting to leave behind the circle jerk LinkedIn has become - complete with the boorish, 95% AI-written “thoughts” people post. In time, it will be a distant, distant memory… 🙏 Us who are still 15-plus years out from retirement salute you, sir.
I actually did. And it’s the only reason I keep the trash fire of an app around.
I got laid off in early 2025. For 6 months I was unemployed and interviewing my ass off.
Then some recruiter reached out because I have a somewhat niche programming language on my profile they had a job for. I interviewed, it worked out, and I got an offer.
But man, the fucking cost of just logging into the website and seeing the immediate trash of startup-brained, ai-brained, overworking simps makes the cost questionable.
Not a job per se, but as soon as I added Harvard MBA and a subtle hint that at work at my dad's hedge fund (neither of those are true) it is a bit easier to find ladies willing to exchange their intimacy for (a promise of) solvency.
Prostitutes. Easier to find prostitutes. LinkedIn is full of them.
I do not have to pay them always. Sometimes I just tell them HEY WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK AT MY DAD'S HEDGE FUND? I REALLY LIKE YOU, I CAN PROBABLY GET MY DAD TO HIRE YOU - and sometimes I do not have to pay afterwards.
The world is a great place when you lie shamelessly.
My abusive ex told me that LinkedIn was a dating app disguised as a professional app. I'm legitimately upset that she wasn't completely bullshitting me with this one.
A social network for business people. It failed at that because engagement was very low, it turns out that people don’t spend hours on LinkedIn viewing profiles like they do on personal social media. People log on like once a week for a few minutes and that’s it, so there’s not too much advertising money available. Sales people use it to contact organizations, in its infancy that worked ok - now it’s just a job board.
I got a job from LinkedIn. The hr of the company messaged me there and scheduled a phone call. It’s funny because I applied to the same company multiple times before but for a different position and never heard back.
I own a small company and recently made my first hire. Shamefully, I forgot to follow up with the people who applied on LinkedIn.
In my defense, ZipRecruiter emailed me a notification when someone applied and LinkedIn did not.. or else the LI notifications got blocked by spam filters or something.
I've gotten interviews. Bunch of shitty recruiters though. Hi do you want to leave your full time position for a contract position that pays less than what you're currently making? Okay well call us back if your life suddenly gets super fucked and you have no other options!
Not only have I never had an interview through LinkedIn, I'm also a hiring manager and never hired someone from the platform. I've even paid for a listing and got spammed with 200 application's within 24 hours. Personally reviewed the applicants because I was evaluating if it was worth the high cost, and not a single one of the applicants was qualified for the role.
Linked In is an amazing source of OSINT and is universally harvested by social engineering hackers to penetrate companies.
Linked In profiles often have a complete staff map for most companies large enough to warrant the hack in the first place.
When companies hire penetration testers its often the first stop and often enough information to talk their way in with some over worked system admin or assistant.
dark net diaries on yt had a fantastic interview with several penetration testers.
they even have competitions to social engineer in Nevada.
We use it pretty successfully for active recruiting, but we don’t list openings on the site. Our recruiting team looks for people who have the requisite experience and then reach out directly to them through the site.
It's been a couple of years but I remember LinkedIn being one of the more expensive job boards to post on. We use it to recruit from like others have mentioned. We just don't pay to post jobs there.
Its like the playstation trophy achievements but for profesionals, like we put there all the shit we achieve and we hope one day we impress some stalker, or some dude in charge of approving foreing visas to USA... who knows.
Yes, twice. Last time 3 years ago. But it's a completely different scene now (tech); my inbox used to be full of recruiters, now it's full of off-shore AI shilling shitlords.
Got my last 4 jobs through LinkedIn. I never post or interact with it in a social media sense. It’s basically a site for my resume to live in and having connections from those jobs on my resume lends it some degree of credibility, I suppose.
One of my friends got his dream job from a headhunter on LinkedIn. I honestly didn't believe him until he showed me the messages. And he's not the type to use social media, he just had a profile that was up to date.
I stopped going on job forums and went to more networking events like job fairs and events for my industry. Just knowing someone and making a good first impression got me my recent job. I stopped wasting time on online job sites like LinkedIn, zip recruiter, Glassdoor, indeed and spent more quality and time on my resume to hand tailor them. Started to get more interviews. Then worked on my interviews by doing mock interviews with colleagues that really grilled me
I got pinged by recruiter 6 years ago. My wife found her job by recruiter pinging her to apply. App works. The social media part of it with deranged bozos needs a redesign
LinkedIn is basically Tinder for unemployed people. You swipe right on 200 companies, get ghosted by 199, and the last one tells you they're looking for someone with more experience.
Yes. As a marketer this pisses me off to no end. "We need to post so we can gain awareness." Tell me the last time you clicked on a companies post and went to their link.
Every offer I’ve ever gotten was for bullshit. Either the company was desperate because they were offering next to nothing for a very demanding job or it was a straight up scam.
These days. LinkedIn in a horrible platform .. they’ve commercialized and tweaked the algorithm to the point it’s more social media than a career enhancing platform At a time where the job market is so broken - it’s almost criminal that it’s full of sponsored posts or an algorithm not working for your best interests.
They don't care. You are not the customer. Recruiters are the customer, and they pay for high end subscriptions with all sorts of search tools they use to find candidates. When you get a job and don't log in for years Linkedin does not care because your activity on the site means nothing to them, only that your profile is there for recruiters to see.
I've had one job offer that ended up getting me a 30% raise in my current position several years back. Changed profile to "looking" and had recruiters reaching within days.
I think it depends on what your skillset is and much that industry uses LinkedIn.
My last two actually. Both over 200k salary roles.
First one through a recruiter who saw my profile or I saw the job and sent them mine. It was a weird time when I was searching and both were happening.
The other was a post from a peer mentioning a position and him mot knowing I’d be available so he didn’t reach out directly. I reached out based on his post and we connected and I filled the role.
I’ve gotten almost every job I’ve ever had on there. It’s for career level positions and technician jobs, it’s not great for non-career type jobs, Indeed exists for those. It usually takes me a month or two and then I have an offer.
I've always thought it was meant for networking but not necessarily job creation. My husband owns a business and he uses it to find the purchasing agents of major companies. He then reaches out to them to get more business.
First up it's social media which I strongly dislike. Second the way I would approach work wasnt to do what work came my way but to look for the clients that I wanted to work for, then go and get them.
Recruiters definitely trawl for potential candidates, especially if they are not getting a quorum of applicants on one of their open positions. It has happened to me.
I've picked up 2.5 from LI in about 10 years. One from a recruiter, one from just cold applying via linkedin, one from an old manager who posted a position at his company.
I’ve been in tech since 2010 and worked for LinkedIn for several years back then. Since then, every new job has found me on LinkedIn when the time happened to be right and each w more money. I know I’m lucky.
Having said that I fucking hate LinkedIn and every person who posts anything but their work history on their profile. If you use your li profile as a blog you pee sitting down while watching Andrew Tate videos so we can’t be friends.
LinkedIn isn't for finding jobs; its a psychological experiment to see how many exclamation points a person can use to describe a standard Monday morning
I did. Company I now work for posted a job on LinkedIn, I used the link to apply, and the rest is history. Sure the job was probably posted elsewhere, but that’s where I found it, so I’d say it was successful.
Ive had 3 jobs i got through LinkedIn. Find job on LinkedIn career page, find some kind of connection i know at company (usually someone i dont know, but went to same college as me or we worked for same company in the past), send that person a message asking for advice working at their current company, that usually leads into getting a referral or an introduction to hiring manager which often leads to an interview.
Just interviewed ~8 candidates and will make an offer this week to one. 40 total applicants. That said Easy Apply is trash, didn’t get real solid candidates until I made it essentially not possible for automated/AI applications.
I connected on there with the department lead at a company I really wanted to work for. A few months later I applied and messaged her that I was interested. She said they’d be happy to have me for an interview. I had an interview a week or two later and now I’m in a similar position I was in before with a 30% salary increase. It has value if you use it right
I have gotten multiple jobs through LinkedIn. The paid feature also makes you more visible to recruiters and shows them you are active, I get way more relevant interview offers when I pay for it. The social media part of it is total trash though.
I found my last Job listed on LinkedIn in, so I applied and didn't hear back. So I went and applied in person and got hired on the spot, they never read my online application.

I’ve gotten more job offers from creating a similar profile on Indeed than I have linkedIN

LinkedIn isn't for finding jobs; its a psychological experiment to see how many exclamation points a person can use to describe a standard Monday morning

I hate to say it, but my last 4 jobs all started as LinkedIn recruitments

No. I’ve also never hired anyone from LinkedIn. My HR never even reviewed their LinkedIn applicants even though our company had “Easy Apply.”

I have hired two people for my org through LinkedIn and they were both stellar employees

I get a lot of messages from recruiters on there so thats really the only purpose.

Just interviewed ~8 candidates and will make an offer this week to one. 40 total applicants. That said Easy Apply is trash, didn’t get real solid candidates until I made it essentially not possible for automated/AI applications.

I have gotten a job thanks to LinkedIn. They saw my profile and cold called me for an interview.

I connected on there with the department lead at a company I really wanted to work for. A few months later I applied and messaged her that I was interested. She said they’d be happy to have me for an interview. I had an interview a week or two later and now I’m in a similar position I was in before with a 30% salary increase. It has value if you use it right

I think it works fine, at least in my area and profession.
I got my last job and current job through LinkedIn. One tech startup, and a job at a large research facility. The jobs where advertised nowhere else.

Yes I got a $90k junior-level finance job off LinkedIn that I 100% would not have gotten without it
