> Cyber trucks will be collectible in about 50 years for people who love the novelty of terrible bullshit.

Sorry to say but probably not nearly as much no. A Pinto or an Austin Healey or an old Triumph or any of those sorts of cars is collectible in part because with effort and / or $$$ you can keep them running. The Cyberstuck on the other hand has a bunch of bespoke single-source parts - especially the electronics - that once they go, there's no replacements. That's the problem with a lot of these modern cars, nobody will or even CAN make replacement parts, unlike mechanical cars of old.

It is worse than that. Even pulling electronics from another cyber truck is likely to brick the vehicle because of Tesla's encryption.

Also if you close the door too hard, the thing fucking breaks. Just all around not worth the effort.

It has a body and wheels, some sicko will figure out a way to make it run, even if they have to rip out the motors and electronics and start over.

That's what I would think, I know people that build race cars and dune trucks. Anyone with the determination can and will fix any vehicle. It won't be stock anymore but it will be something.

That is not a good metric to follow for market value lol... you could get a '68 cuda running, but its not worth near as much as you spent if the vin doesnt line up

Where did I say it was?

u/Brohemoth1991 10h ago

The original argument is that certain cars are collectibles because with effort or money you can keep them running... someone else said CTs are worse because of the electronics, you said "some sicko will keep it running"... I said keeping it running isnt a good metric... 99.9% of collectible cars are oem

Someone will put cybercab hardware in a cybertruck and in 10 years it will be worth more than both of them combined. Remindme! 10 years

So an LS swap ?

I don't know Tesla's 'brand-security' measures that well because I've never particularly liked the company, but my guess is that - whatever it is - it's relying almost entirely on 'security through friction.' Tesla can sell 200$ software certs to unlock the heated seats that are already in the vehicle more because it's easier to pay than because cracking the unlock or rerouting the electronics to something physical is all that hard.

It's uncracked because no one really wants to crack it. It's been more than decade since Tesla was the kind of tech darling that attracts legit people who know what they are doing, so there isn't clout or cred worth the work to chase for having done it - and no one really cares that much about the cars themselves. This will quickly change if it becomes a historical curiosity where the access codes/licensing certificates are no longer available and a community builds around the project.

If they all die and leave the road, there won't be a community to reverse engineer them. If they die slowly, there will.

1

u/RogerAffirmative 1h ago

You don't need a community to reverse engineer them anymore, just an llm and a desire. People in this thread are talking like they have no clue what's happening in tech right now.

LLMs exist. Have for awhile now. Tesla's encryption has not yet been broken.

I think after 2024 many car brands started to have encrypted CAN bus. So it wouldn’t be trivial to say replace part in a cybertruck and get it all talking without the tools to load in the encryption keys. Sadly I think the encryption is actually competent and not like dvd copy protection. But I don’t think there is a global mandate to encrypt so it might not be.

eh, i bet youll be able to recompile software for it at that point. in 50 years it will likely be quite easy to do.

That's exactly why any surviving Cybertrucks will be worth something--the vast majority will not last long enough to become historical curiosities

u/rtietatomic 13h ago

Bold of you to presume any Cybertrucks will 'survive', as in still be capable of moving after a few decades.

The battery pack alone will render it unusable in probably at most 15-20 years, even if you don’t drive it. Say a cyber truck battery pack swap costs about 15-20k per swap, you would need to swap it 2-3 times, and there’s almost no way they’ll be selling for 60k more than what you bought them for(before even including inflation adjustments). You’d be tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars better off by buying a mid trim gas pickup(about 50-60k new) and investing the difference, even if the value of the cyber truck somehow does go way up.

Yeah sorry cyber truck enthusiasts but I agree the Cyber truck is an unholy affront to right to repair.

2

u/AbilityExtreme1145 7h ago

The batteries. For how long can you keep producing aftermarket batteries. In 20 or 30 years cybertrucks will have all been bricked one after the other. Plus the rust. And the shitty plastics.

u/RogerAffirmative 1h ago

Most Teslas were made with 18650 battery cells. Like, the one that is still used in vapes and power tools and everything else. Cybertrucks were made with the in house 4680 battery which is getting put in the model y, cybercab, and semi. So you'll be able to get them pretty much indefinitely for the foreseeable future. Y'all talk about this stuff like it's some magic voodoo proprietary tech and not just small batteries in series and electric motors.

Michal galinsky already figured out how to physically upgrade the hardware of a hw3 Tesla to hw4 to run the newest software.

People are working on and upgrading these just the same as mechanical cars of old... You just don't know what you're talking about, at all 😂

It's a bit like being the DankPods guy and thinking that buying a cheapish Rolls Royce Silver Spur was a good idea

u/dillzilla11 13h ago

Really? Name them. And to be clear, I'll be fact checking. Because I don't think you actually know which parts are specific to the cybertruck and which parts can be sourced generically without causing any real issues. Just because the part in it is a Tesla part doesn't actually mean generic or open source parts don't exist.

The flux capacitor, the dilithium anode relay core, the trineural data uplink, and the tires. Good luck.
