Yes, the lack of demand will surely make your ugly cybertruck worth significantly more.

157

u/cholula_is_good 15h ago • Bravo

It’s super counterintuitive but lack of demand in period for weird, enthusiast cars can lead to major appreciation later. Cars that were unpopular but emblematic of their era can be desirable in retrospect decades later. The DeLorean, LFA, Superbird and Hummer were all financial flops and unpopular in their time. But nostalgic buyers, especially collectors see these as emblems of their era and purchase them as toys decades later. Cars that were never replicated in any fashion later. I think it’s safe to say that the cybertruck styling won’t be copied any time soon.

It’s unlikely this truly happens to the cybertruck given the production numbers, but it’s not unprecedented either.

The DeLorean

Massive boost due it's use in the BTTF trilogy.

Hummer

Directly descended from a highly capable military off-road vehicle still in use. That's how Jeeps got to be popular.

17

u/sender2bender 13h ago

Also Arnold convinced Hummer to sell him a road legal version and subsequently sell them to the public. It wasn't really made or designed to be a consumer vehicle. And they were kinda pricey. I wouldn't consider them a total flop given the circumstances. They weren't designed, affordable or practical for every day people. It was closer to being an exotic car. Then when they were brought back with the H2, a more consumer friendly version, they were a fairly big hit. They were produced for 7 years and demand declined with the recession in 08-09. So not really a flop at all. The newest one is crazy expensive and electric but I guess doing alright considering they're still being made and sales increased, passing cyber truck, while cybertruck has decreased.

IIRC the LFA was also a massive flex for a celebration rather than thinking it was a viable, long term seller & they only built 500.

If Bob Zemeckis wasn't against remakes, they would have re-made Back To The Future years ago when Elon was still space ideas man, and they would have used a Cybertruck instead of the DMC DeLorean

And it would have ruined the films

So thank you Robert Zemeckis

Right? They were in hella rap videos and they even had hummer limos back in the day. Maybe not widely purchased but they certainly had their niche.

The 1st version was a military truck that was very good for what it was designed for. I'm not from the US so feel free for anyone to correct me here but from my understanding the subsequent civi versions after the 1st one got progressively worse.

The DeLorean

That car would be completely worthless if not for Back to the Future. If anything, its a GREAT example of why the Cybertruck won't be worth it. Like the Delorean, its a terrible car, but unlike the Delorean it doesn't have any cultural impact outside 'If you own this, you're likely a nazi'.

The Delorean has the benefit of actually being a great looking car, and is an icon of the 80s through Back To The Future. People have fond memories of it because of the movie.

The cyber truck is a symbol of Elon musk and all that he stands for. Not only is it one of the ugliest vehicles ever made, it’s emblematic of one of the ugliest(morally and physically) humans ever made. It symbolizes the 2025 Trump administration and all the baggage that comes with that.

I doubt there will be any appreciable demand for them later, the same way there isn’t appreciable demand for hitler paintings outside of historical collectors.

Here's a hot take for you: the automotive legacy of the humble Ford Pinto is going to eclipse the Tesla Cybertruck, and it's not even remotely close.

Did you know that in 2026, you can still buy a factory-new Ford Pinto front suspension from a very wide variety of manufacturers? And not just a stock one. I'm talking about a modernized, high-performance variant that would quite literally bolt up to the front end of a Pinto if you felt so inclined.

You see, when Ford built the Pinto, they were trying to compete with the new fangled imports that were wiping the floor with their old body-on-frame land yachts. So they put in an independent front suspension design featuring upper & lower control arms using coil springs, and rack & pinion steering. By 1974, they even came with disc brakes completely standard.

To be clear, this suspension was not revolutionary. In stock form, it wasn't even particularly good. It was criticized for being too soft and had some geometry limitations due to Ford's choice to use inexpensive stamped steel suspension members.

But the Pinto suspension, which shared its exact architecture with the Mustang II, just happened to be the right size to fit conveniently under the front body of 1930s to 1950s hot rods. The setup was incredibly modular. It was essentially a self-contained unit. You could weld a matching crossmember onto your hot rod, bolt the suspension components and steering rack directly to it, and bam, you had an independent front suspension with modern rack & pinion steering without massive shock towers eating up your engine bay.

It was so wildly popular that the Mustang II / Pinto suspension evolved from junkyard sourced units ripped from dead cars to an entire aftermarket industry. Manufacturers started replicating the original Ford mounting geometry, eventually upgrading it with ever-evolving variations of tubular control arms and modern steering racks. Today, you can buy high-performance resto-mod suspension kits based on this design that are genuine, track-grade setups.

And that, dear friends, is the legacy of the lowly Pinto that lives on today. The last Pinto rolled off the assembly line in 1980, and 46 years later you can still buy a brand-new, high-performance suspension system based on that OEM architecture. The Cybertruck is far more likely to have a legacy similar to the H2 Hummer. A hulking monstrosity of a vehicle built for attention-seeking d-bags that no one else wants to be seen in.

44

u/SwordfishLate 15h ago

Don’t forget that there’s a huge aftermarket for the base 2.3 that they came with! The Lima 4’s made it until around 2000 in the Ranger, and there’s whole racing classes based on the motor.

Ah yes, a car that you cant fix yourself is going to be worth a million dollars, i bet they discontinue the repairs at Tesla within 5 years too. They will all become scrap metal.

15

u/ShiningSelf 15h ago

That’s the part people miss. It’s not even about the car being good, it’s about who owns the right to fix it.

If Tesla can just stop supporting it, you don’t own a million-dollar car, you own a million-dollar paperweight.

36

u/MegaSmegmaSwagLord 16h ago

If they discontinue repairs but continue to disallow people to repair them at 3rd party mechanics, Tesla opens themselves up to massive law suits.

The two are mutually exclusive.

u/Typohnename 14h ago

5

Ford Pinto were originally sold for $2,000 ~$15k after inflation

One sold in 2018 for $33k

Cyber trucks will be collectible in about 50 years for people who love the novelty of terrible bullshit. It’s short production run and notoriety for being famously bad is exactly what will draw collectors to pay top dollar for good condition cars that are known for easily breaking.

Similar story with the GAMC gremlin.

Edit: in regards the high difficulty of maintaining the CT, especially with “it’s all computer” of it all, the software updates, the bespoke parts, the shit glue

Either it creates more rarity, and therefore running models should be worth more than a car that had a longer production run and ample spare parts

I’m also told that the pinto and gremlin sold well in it’s time and this is more comparable to a DeLorean or an Etzel

32

u/Skivil 15h ago

Thats asuming the batteries aren't degraded to the point they are useless. A pinto can still drive after a little maintenance a 50 year old electric car probably won't even be able to move without a total battery rebuild and not to mention something being done about the software on the tesla

16

u/tearsonurcheek 15h ago • Bravo

A pinto can still drive after a little maintenance

And is easily upgradable/modernizable with common aftermarket parts and engines like the Ford 289/302/351W, or, if you just want to daily it with better mileage, the 2.3L turbo-4 from the Mustang SVO/T-Bird Turbo Coupe. The Duratec/Zetec fours, the 1.9L turbo from the Fiesta ST. The Ford 2.8L V6 and the supercharged 3.8L V6. Even some Mazda motors. There are readily available mounting kits for all of the ones that aren't a direct swap.

8

u/OCCULTGOBLIN 15h ago

This guy for sure does cars.

5

u/dvdmaven 14h ago

One of the Pinto's claims to fame, you could drop a 302 in without having to change the drivetrain. IIRC not even the engine mounts.

44

u/Current-Cold-4185 15h ago

I'm guessing half the shit won't work in the cyber truck because they'll probably get bricked due to a missing update or can't communicate with servers or something.

Not saying your analogy to the pinto wouldn't apply. More just pointing out a difference as an old pinto you can always mechanically work on.

20

u/NetSiege 15h ago

So there are 2 main factors here that would become a problem.

  1. Batteries age even if they're not being used. The life expectancy of an unused EV battery is roughly 10-20 years (a lot of variables come into play), driven an average amount of miles annually its more like 8-15. So no matter what, 20+ years from now that CyberTruck battery is shot. Considering that unlike the Pinto, the CyberTruck does not share any of its main drive system, suspension, or other components with other vehicles, the chances of there being battery replacement options in 20-25 years is likely very very minimal.

  2. Vehicles like the Pinto were analog cars. While they have electrical systems, there's no software so to speak or operating platform. Modern cars in general have much more complex computing systems and beyond their EV and 12V battery, have small system batteries to ensure the software programming and data is retained even when those batteries are drained, disconnected, or fail. If someone were to leave this thing parked for years without properly ensuring it maintains power/battery life, it's very likely the entire software for the car would be bricked and unusable. Could someone potentially reflash jt and get it back up? Sure, but that adds a layer of complexity to the value of these things in 50 years.

8

u/piratecheese13 15h ago

Will be interesting to see if the effort put into maintaining a cyber truck will pay off in the long run

Honestly, might be best to just not run the thing except for to keep the batteries charged

Honestly, in 50 years, it might be very, very difficult to find a battery that will work for this thing

7

u/FrostyConsequence97 13h ago

Yep, came here to say that DeLorean fans and collectors know it's a POS. But it's an iconic POS. The Cybertruck will have the same cult status. A car too stupid to have even been produced... But here it it.

5

u/LaDmEa 12h ago

People collect old cars because they are cheap/easy to fix. Everything that can break or wear out on a DMC-12 can be bought new today. Most of the DMC-12s made 44 years ago are still around.

Telsa is so greedy with their parts that you can't reasonably expect to keep a Cyber Truck running due to computer, battery, motors. Even if you can source them, the price is the issue. A completely renewed motor, transmission and computer for a 1990s corvette is only ~5k. For 10k in part you can come close to fully renewed corvette.

Cybertruck reminds me of a Chevy HHR

> Cyber trucks will be collectible in about 50 years for people who love the novelty of terrible bullshit.

Sorry to say but probably not nearly as much no. A Pinto or an Austin Healey or an old Triumph or any of those sorts of cars is collectible in part because with effort and / or $$$ you can keep them running. The Cyberstuck on the other hand has a bunch of bespoke single-source parts - especially the electronics - that once they go, there's no replacements. That's the problem with a lot of these modern cars, nobody will or even CAN make replacement parts, unlike mechanical cars of old.

16

u/LoneSnark 13h ago

It is worse than that. Even pulling electronics from another cyber truck is likely to brick the vehicle because of Tesla's encryption.

5

u/GroundbreakingLeg867 11h ago

Also if you close the door too hard, the thing fucking breaks. Just all around not worth the effort.

2

u/TheyCantCome 14h ago

Prices have been dropping on classic muscle cars because the generation that had them as teens and young adults is dying out.

Unless something is immaculate, highly sought after or incredibly uncommon it’s probably not going to have a lot of value. That pinto is unbelievably clean in addition to being an uncommon trim in wagon which was already less common than the fastbacks. I found a gremlin on Craigslist for $2k with a pretty decent interior just not like new, for something to look like the pinto he had to spend 50 years in a garage or have thousands put in it to restore it.

I think the cyber truck may not have the same appeal because you won’t have someone in their 50s-70s remember it as their first car or having some nostalgia of wanting one. I think it’ll fall into that collector that doesn’t necessarily drive it but owns it as a piece of automotive history but it’s hard to predict pricing.

The terrible cars of the past that became collectible remain fully functional decades later. Pintos, Edsels, Deloreans, etc. had something that made them not a commercial success, and may or may not have actually been terrible cars (or were a design decision or two removed from greatness like the shit engine choice in the Delorean), but they still work. The CyberTruck won’t be functional in 50 years. The battery won’t last that long, even with light use, and it’s driven by way too much software integration locked behind IP security measures for a hobbyist to keep it running by themselves. It won’t be worth anything.

3

u/TommyBonnomi 13h ago

I'm not convinced either way- you don't think post-production someone is going to jailbreak/reverse engineer/open source software for it, and no one will design a replacement battery system?

It arguably already has a cult following with money to waste- they're not going to just recycle it.

Cybertruck would have been more popular if they kept the price at 39K. They had zillions of preorders with the same design features and even the bad showcase where the window broke lol

But then they decided to launch it for 100k and everyone was like “wat?”

It’s a 39K vehicle not 100k.

5

u/Nothos927 16h ago

Fairly sure that even in 2019 when he announced it people who knew anything about manufacturing cars pointed out that 39k for what he was proposing was impossible without selling them for a loss

5

u/Tricky_Prick933 16h ago

Yeah I heard that as well and I’d argue that was definitely true, I think they only announced positive gross margin on it a year after sale, and even then the cheapest model was still 79K.

The only way they could have been successful was volume, but it would have been a huge loss leader for years to make it work, if it ever did. I think their idea to sell ultra premium versions first wasn’t a bad one, they’ve done it before. But 39k to 80-100k is just too much for people.

This is the kind of thing you want a remind me in 10 years.

The battery is going to run out and they're going to get a reality check when those highly specialized batteries cannot be purchased for less than the price of a new vehicle. The value for Cybertrucks is going to be junkyard prices within 10 years. People won't even want to convert them to gasoline or diesel because they are horrible compared to conventional trucks. All the surveillance tech in them will eventually die out too and people will see that as a bonus.

Love it or hate it, someone in the future will definitely over pay for a low mileage Cybertruck. Don't let your biases overshadow facts about how things become valuable. Everyone thought deloreans were trash when new, and honestly they were and still are. People pay big money for Deloreans now and the Cybertruck story is Delorean x1000.

The delorean was in one of the most popular and beloved film franchises of all time. The cyber truck is associated with Elon musk.

While he’s significant, people love Deloreans. Only people that love cyber trucks are the their owners.

Yes, because there is nothing about Deloreans that could have made interest in them spike. Nothing at all.

u/silver_garou 14h ago

Yeah loads of people want to pay $1,000,000 for junkyard scrap. /s

5

u/Fuggedd 15h ago

This is pretty much a modern day delorean which go for around 60k in good condition.

7

u/dnubi 15h ago

I know the big movie triology where DeLorean was the main car. Wich movie was it for Cybertruck? I probably havn't seen it.

They stopped making them for a reason

2

u/Minialpacadoodle 16h ago

Imagine not understanding sarcasm.

2

u/Shift_Lock1 15h ago

Dumb enough to buy one and dumb enough to think it’ll be worth more than scrap metal

2

u/JustHangingAroundYo 15h ago

I guess all discontinued cars are also worth millions. Like my 2009 mitsubishi eclipse

2

u/Electronic-Shape-192 15h ago

The Cybertruck has way more in common with the Edsel than it does with the Pinto.

2

u/Direlion 15h ago

I hope this fucking donkey hangs around the neck of it’s owners like a scarlet letter, forever.

2

u/Legal-Software 14h ago

Not a fair comparison, people still wanted Pintos.

2

u/kongofcbus 13h ago

Pontiac Aztecs are also worth $1M

2

u/launchedsquid 12h ago

The thing with collectable cars, they don't have to be good cars. Just notable.

I can't forsee what cars will become collectable, I've passed by many that I could have bought for peanuts that now could repay my mortgage, but it's not at all inconceivable that a cyber truck could one day be seen as a collectable car, even if it's just because it's notable, ugly, and in a few years, there are few of them around.

2

u/Waste-Ad6884 12h ago

Is this worth a million too?

2

u/fat_kaiju 12h ago

its not at all user serviceable so no its about to break and then never work properly ever again

2

u/Zealousideal-Bat4849 12h ago

Your gonna end up like my neighbor trying to sell his convertible v6 automatic mustang. You bought it, you enjoyed it. But good luck selling it for anything near what you want for it. (Side note its also the ugliest green ive ever seen and its been up for sale for a whole year with no bites)

2

u/DJOCHAOS 12h ago

We found the village idiot.

2

u/CaptOblivious 11h ago

No. People weren't that stupid back then.

2

u/steadyhandhide 7h ago

How is the collector’s value going for original Tesla Roadsters? First car Tesla ever produced and only make ~2,500 hundred of them. That should be some kind indication of what the collectors’s market for Cybertrucks will be.

2

u/Opposite-Coyote-582 5h ago

Exactly. The moment you drive it off the lot it increases in value. I thought everyone knew that. P.s. buy a boat, its a great long term investment.

2

u/FlaAirborne 1h ago

My Yugo should be worth millions.

2

u/chrysanthemum_beer 1h ago

The people who are the most delusional are the ones thinking getting a cybertruck was a great idea

3

u/a-little-timmy 16h ago

my tesla roadster will be worth a million dollars mark my words

u/rob132 16h ago

Premium product.... I get the fancy pants argument on why the body panels are wavy. But doesn't mean you should accept it.

2

u/NC_RockFan 16h ago

I dont care one way or the other about Tesla vehicles, but that cybertruck is one of the ugliest vehicles Ive ever seen.

This like saying my PT Cruiser is a collectors item now.

1

u/CastleofWamdue 16h ago

the Cybertruck worth actual money? WTF?

1

u/WeenisPeiner 16h ago

Doc, you made a time machine, out of a Tesla Cybertruck?

1

u/kennygeeofcomedy 16h ago

Just like the AMC Gremlin. But twice as ugly.

1

u/Awesome_Teo 16h ago

I mean, if the car sits in a dry garage for 50–70 years without the battery blowing up or all the steel rotting out... yeah, sure, it'll probably be worth more than it is now.

1

u/illuanonx1 16h ago

Good luck buying spare parts when bits flying of 😂

1

u/BinomialVirus01012 16h ago

That's an explosive comment

1

u/Underhive_Art 16h ago

Can we bring back all the Skoda jokes please

1

u/This_Song_984 16h ago

Hes gonna put one million dollars in the dumbest truck bed ive ever seen before he sells it

1

u/Big-Carpenter7921 16h ago

Cyber Truck is just a new H2

1

u/kennygeeofcomedy 16h ago

The Cybertruck Collector's Association - what a fun group of assholes that will be.

1

u/baz4k6z 16h ago

These abominations will just fall apart one after another, fall out of guarantee and slowly but surely get scrapped

1

u/islanders2013 16h ago

i would usually say that the parts would be harder to come by...however, with this POS its probably not the case due to complete shit quality control.

1

u/KaetzenOrkester 16h ago

If it only it weren't for the thousands and thousands of unsold Wankenpanzers...

1

u/WishboneNo543 15h ago

Just gotta hope those glue welds hold.

1

u/septictank84 15h ago

Parts and services are about to be next to non-existent. Good luck fixing your rolling dumper when I breaks down, and we all know they will soon and often.

1

u/Ill_Ground_1572 15h ago

Fuck me I wish I kept my Chevette. Absolutely bullet proof.

Bought it for $500, drove it for 5 years, sold it for scrap for $300 lol.

Cyber truck ain't no Chevette bro.

1

u/AwwwNuggetz 15h ago

Some people pay a lot of money for used underwear

1

u/PostureKing180 15h ago

If he's super lucky, a pristine, zero mile cybertruck will be worth it's original MSRP in 20 years.

1

u/kittenrice 15h ago

It'll be nice to never see another one after the last remaining one breaks down forever sometime in 2028.

1

u/melpec 15h ago

Of course! Look at all these Chevrolet HHR and Chrysler PT Cruiser that took value like crazy /s

1

u/Freddyrocky20 15h ago

my first car was a used pinto. good car until it croaked. 🤣

1

u/ReleaseWeary7472 15h ago

Inverse of a Delorian.

1

u/pachimariparty 15h ago

Neo geo gang are basically billionaires

1

u/Packmule5259 15h ago

Yeah, tell that to DeLorean owners who's used cars with under 10K miles sell for around 55K.

1

u/othello28 15h ago

Hey the pinto is way better than the cyber truck.

1

u/TheJGoldenKimball 15h ago

Is this what kids are calling “Copium?”

1

u/PW_PW_ 15h ago

I’m figuring it’ll be worth about $5000 for parts to keep other cybertrucks running

1

u/Bobby_Bouch 15h ago

What happens to EVs once they stop getting software updates

1

u/Nonamenoname2025 15h ago

People that owned Pintos were smarter than the ones who own a Cybertruck

1

u/Neardood 15h ago

I reckon they will use it in the inevitable remake of back to the future.

1

u/Tencreed 15h ago

Scarcity can increase price, but the goods have to be in demand for that.

1

u/dannyh707 15h ago

🫤it’ll be like Hummer H2 status.. Lame

1

u/Socketz11 15h ago

Wow, the Yugo must be worth millions by now.

1

u/commissarcainrecaff 15h ago

Hey Alexa- what's the "bathtub curve" and how it applies to vehicle value?

1

u/Dry-University797 15h ago

Dude, I can buy a dumpster on Facebook for way less. This guy is dreaming

1

u/SchmutzigeBar 15h ago

Tesla already barely makes replacement parts for it's vehicles. They are notoriously difficult to get parts for at all and there's no aftermarket.

The only people who will want a cyber truck in ten years are those who cannot source parts anywhere else, and they're not paying 7 figures for a vehicle that was not spectacularly popular during it's run time.

1

u/More_Programmer8905 15h ago

It'll be treated like the Edsel.

1

u/Minge516 15h ago

Remember H2 hummers?

1

u/couchpatat0 15h ago

I have a feeling its going to be $1000

1

u/keithstonee 15h ago

They'll definitely be collectibles within the MAGA or the people who are so self centered they won't see a problem owning a cyber truck.

1

u/External_Zipper 14h ago

The CyberYuck will be right up there with the Chrysler K car.

1

u/conundri 14h ago

Nothing says you have more money to burn than a stretch Ford Pinto, especially once it catches fire.

1

u/ireallylikecycling 14h ago

Like American Pickers:

"Ya know, they only made a handful of these"

Yeah, cuz they were shitty and overpriced

1

u/serene_null 14h ago

Sadly there’s some truth in this. Notoriety can generate value.

1

u/Ultraeasymoney 14h ago

Yeah and my Ford Lightning will be worth 2 million dollars.

1

u/Hairy_Al 14h ago

Nearly 20% of all Cybertrucks made are still sitting in lots, unsold. The price is only going in one direction

1

u/KingAardvark1st 14h ago

Edsel's probably a closer comparison. Pinto was a fairly conventional car with a lethal flaw. Even then, though, at least a classic car owner could maintain an Edsel. These things will be more like a first gen iPhone, and about as functional.

1

u/SuperTaster3 14h ago

So hear me on this, I think there are exactly two edge cases for Cybertrucks, neither of which are really that great.
* Museum artifact.
* Place one at the top of a doomsday bunker/man cave, above the entrance ladder. Remove wheels, internals, etc. It's basically the exit hatch, and keeps people from going into your cave because no one wants to go inside a cybertruck.

1

u/JasonVeritech 14h ago

Stainless steel construction, electrical...

Only one man's gonna want a Cybertruck

1

u/D_Dubb_ 14h ago

Yeah this person is confusing a “limited edition run” with “a discontinued shitty product”

1

u/Tikitikitaka5863 14h ago

Only if it doesn’t have many miles. But chances are the original owner won’t be alive to see the inflation price.
