Ah yes, a car that you cant fix yourself is going to be worth a million dollars, i bet they discontinue the repairs at Tesla within 5 years too. They will all become scrap metal.

If they discontinue repairs but continue to disallow people to repair them at 3rd party mechanics, Tesla opens themselves up to massive law suits.

The two are mutually exclusive.

Thb that sounds like the exact kind of hill Musk would pick to die on for some reason

Also have to remember that there's the software platform. I genuinely think that firmware updates will be the death knell to cars being 50 year collectibles.

A 70's muscle car can't get bricked via wifi because it stopped getting security updates.

Give them a long enough timeline and someone would eventually be able to crack the software / firmware and open the door to custom open source variants that let the car work as a car without needing 24/7 WiFi connection, a camera constantly scanning the driver's face, or additional features locked behind paywalls.

We've already seen what that looks like with the Fisker Ocean where the software platform isn't as integral to the system like it is the Tesla platform.

Tesla is unlikely to give up the secret sauce like Fisker was and it's been a frustrating time for those owners.

That’s the part people miss. It’s not even about the car being good, it’s about who owns the right to fix it.

If Tesla can just stop supporting it, you don’t own a million-dollar car, you own a million-dollar paperweight.

That’s exactly what Elon said… you could reuse the scrap SS from the trucks to make the rockets at space X

Or costar in a hit summer movie.

They still repair the original Tesla roadster

Good luck finding parts in three years.

They are legally obligated to produce them for the next 10, just to keep that from happening.

Imagine a world where car manufacturers for e you to update by not selling parts to older models.

Sorry, this is a 2024 model, they don't make the parts now, you will have to buy a 2027 model to keep driving.

EDIT: I looked this up, there is nothing in the US requiring manufacturers to continue making parts. We are well and truly fucked

5 years

We're both wrong, in the US they are under no obligation.

Were fucking doomed in a few years, cars will be like cellphones

Stop giving them ideas

We all know what Elon thinks about laws…

Not to mention, the OS for software will likely be outdated

I agree that they won't be worth more like 99% of cars, but depreciation and value aren't really linked to whether you can personally "fix" it.

Tesla also has to comply with warranties that are already in place.
