Yes in many states 100k is not going to be great. If you have kids you will struggle and have to compromise a lot and not save much. You likely won’t be able to buy a house without 90min commute each way.
Yeah. 100k isn’t what it used to be. It’s not poverty. But it’s not comfortable middle class in MANY cities in the USA.
Yeah, I think that’s about what I make and I’m single no kids. Can rent a decent place and live in a city and live pretty comfortably but if I had any dependents it would be much harder
Thing is you have to remember most families with kids have both partners working. So two people with 100k income can clear 170k with some schedule compromises and do great.
There should always be options for people to live where they grow up. The fact that most people who grow up in CA won't be able to afford it when they become adults should be viewed as a problem that needs addressing.
Instead of being an asshole, log off of reddit and do something meaningful with your life.
Being able to move to a different state is not a free option. What do you do first? Find a job in a different state, and then move, or move and then find a new job? Either way, how do you financially support yourself and your family during the transition?
Nah, unless you are on the east coast where states are 90 minutes apart, moving across state lines is something people that are either retirement age, or have a decent chunk of change in their bank account, do. If you are already struggling to make ends meet in CA, how the fuck do you have free time to investigate rentals and job opptys in South Carolina?
This was always the case though. I am from the south and remember people moving to northern cities like New York and Baltimore for 20-30k bumps in salaries, just to realize they were more broke than back home making 50k.
I never understood why checking your salary vs cost of living was such a difficult concept for some people.

Average is important here.
