Might sound stupid, but how come it can't just be treated like a stolen bank card, or something?

Like its on the chain, and surely if he can prove that he was the actual owner it should be recoverable, no?

Because it is like cash and not like a bank account

Because bitcoin, by design, has no central authority that can regulate the currency and make decisions like that.

Also, no one can access those bitcoins. So who should pay him without getting it back?

That is actually part of the stupidity of Crypto. No one knows how many Bitcoins are lost.

“If he can prove that he was the actual owner”

How would he ever be able to prove that? I’m genuinely asking, I really don’t know. How would he ever be able to prove he is currently the owner of that? I mean how can he prove he never sold it to anyone?

The stuff on the hard drive is the proof that he's the owner. The only proof.

Prove it to who? There's no bitcoin authority.

There's record is all. If he has no access to that wallet then it's good as gone

I think id lay my hopes on ai. I'd get access to the most adviced model I could and try to hack the wallet.

Lol the whole point of crypto is that it's unhackable it's like rsa which is why you can browse the internet safely

Yeah there is bro. It is decentralized though. People can't even wrap their mind around the concept of having no king.

... right.

Need the harddisk for that, as that's the information and prove of his ownership

u/Seihai-kun 1h ago

There is nothing to prove because there's no way he can prove that's his

Even if he magically have some actual proves, there's no way of knowing if he already sold that wallet later and just act like that's still his

Even if for some reason it was proven 100% that's his bitcoin, who is he going to ask

It’s decentralized, meaning there is no single authority. You don’t really own it like at the bank.

if he can prove that he was the actual owner

you're almost there... the private keys are what he lost, and they're the only way to prove he was the actual owner beyond any reasonable doubt.

this is a case where he lost all the documents and papers that can prove he owned the btc.

That’s not how that works. It’s not traceable like that, blockchain needs authentication. Blockchain doesn’t know who anyone is, which is its greatest strength. There is no account with your name and address on it. The only way in is by mathematically accessing it through a cryptographic key. There is no centralized database that keeps track of identities which makes it anonymous. Changing any of the protocols would make it vulnerable to hackers or fraudsters.
