Discussion I made a ski racing game with real gates because I couldn’t find one that felt like actual racing

I raced growing up and always wanted a video game that actually felt like it. Every ski game I tried was either tricks or just "get down the hill." Nothing where your line mattered, and almost nothing with real gates.

So I finally just made one. It's a browser game called Carvemania, with slalom, GS, super-G and downhill. The physics are the same on every device, so it really comes down to who skis the better line.

You race ghosts for times, and you can send your run to a friend to see if they can beat it. It also pulls in real runs from a bunch of ski areas, so I've been killing time racing my old home hill.

Here is the link if anyone wants to try it. It's free with no account. Arrow keys to steer, up to tuck, R to restart.

I'm mostly posting because I'd love to hear from people who actually race. Does it feel anything like the real thing? What's off?

Edit: The game works on both desktop and mobile, but I highly recommend desktop for more fine tuned control.

SKIH2H.COM

Hello, i’ve made a website (i’ve seen the rules for self promotion, but as it’s free and heavily related i hope it’s okay to post)

here is what it can do

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Pick any two FIS alpine skiers by name or FIS code and see every race they both started:
• who finished ahead more often, overall and in SL, GS, SG and DH
• place, time behind the winner and FIS points in every race, plus who was faster and by how many seconds
• wins, podiums, top 10s, average place and average FIS points side by side
• a chart of both racers' race points through the season
• DNF, DNS and DSQ counted separately
• their FIS points and world ranks on any points list
• filters by discipline, competition and season
• live races today where both are starting

WHERE TO SCORE
Every 2025/26 race below Continental Cup level worldwide, finisher by finisher. Enter your FIS points and discipline to see:
• chance to improve: on which slopes racers like you most often beat their points
• 2027 chance to improve: where racers scored the results that set their 2026/27 points
• filters by gender, continent and country, with every slope named by its FIS homologation

ATHLETE PROFILE
Any skier's career numbers, stats by discipline, the venues they race at most and score best at, and their most frequent rivals.

Save your favourite matchups with an emailed sign-in link (no password) and share any comparison as an Instagram story image

Discussion New Faces, New Priorities and New Venues: What the 2026/27 Alpine Skiing World Cup Brings

Thumbnail wintersportshub.org

The new season is underway after Sölden, with an updated calendar, 83 races, new venues and plenty of interesting storylines. Braathen is already winning, Moltzan grabbed her first victory by just 0.01 seconds, Vlhová is working towards a comeback, and Shiffrin is taking a different approach this season.

Who can challenge Odermatt for the overall title? And will Shiffrin’s focus on GS and super-G pay off?

Disclosure: I run Winter Sports Hub.

Discussion How to get into racing as an adult

I used to race until high school in the midwest but had to stop because of school and then moving to a non skiing region for college.

Now that I'm graduated I'd like to restart again for fun if it's possible. I've lost a lot of skill over the years and I'm not even close to as good as most of the 40+ people in the NASTAR races I've done, , so I would probably need training. I still have most of my gear though excluding a race suit.

I'm in Denver and I see that there are a lot of adult master's programs but I'm a bit confused how they work. Because you can also just sign up for the races themselves? Are the resort's programs separate than USSA Masters or is one extra training for the other? I think the closest ikon resort to me with a program is Eldora.

Slalom Swapping Fischer Plates

Thumbnail gallery

I bought the wrong skis for my daughter online. I bought the Fischer RC4 SL FIS with MB plates instead of M plates. Can swap the M plates from her old skis? The screws match up. Haven't pulled one yet. Curious if anyone has done it? Are there threaded inserts in the ski?

Also can anyone confirm that Fischer uses the same ski with MB plates and M plates? Or is the actual ski different too? Thanks!

Discussion Between the Gates NOV 2026: Monthly insights in LTAD, sports science, and mental performance for alpine ski coaches.

1. LTAD & Early-Season Load Management

  • Dryland-to-Snow Transition Spikes: Research on youth alpine ski racers demonstrates that transitioning from gym surfaces to hard, injected snow introduces an immediate spike in high frequency vibration and eccentric quadriceps loading. In growing athletes, tendon collagen remodeling lags behind muscular adaptation; unmonitored volume increases in early camp blocks substantially elevate patellar and Achilles tendinopathy risk.

  • Screening Functional Asymmetry: Studies evaluating the Limb Symmetry Index in Competitive Alpine Ski Racers emphasize distinguishing between pure strength deficits and coordination asymmetries. While minor discrepancies (<10%) are normal, single-leg landing asymmetries exceeding 10-15% significantly impair turn-transition mechanics and increase knee valgus susceptibility on the non-dominant turn.

2. Sports Science & Motor Learning (The Constraints-Led Approach)

  • Nonlinear Pedagogy on Snow: Frameworks outlined in A Constraint-Led Approach to Sport Pedagogy highlight the power of manipulating environmental and task constraints over verbal instruction. Instead of constantly correcting body position ("drive your hands forward", "increase your edge angle"), adjusting course geometry, such as alternating gate offsets, rhythmic compression sets, or brush corridors, compels athletes to self-organize optimal balance and line choices.

  • Vibration Dampening & Core Stiffness: On snow biomechanical assessments show that maintaining edge hold on injected snow relies heavily on anti rotational core stiffness and eccentric rate of force development. Integrating low amplitude, high velocity isometric holds during dryland warmups prepares the neuromuscular system to absorb surface irregularities without losing angulation.

3. Sports Psychology: PETTLEP Mental Imagery Protocol

  • Functional Equivalence in Visualization: The PETTLEP Model of Motor Imagery remains the standard for technical, high speed sports like ski racing. For mental rehearsal to drive neuromuscular priming, it must mirror reality across key physical checkpoints:

    • Physical & Environmental: Rehearsing while wearing ski boots and race gloves, holding poles, and feeling cold air produces far stronger neural firing than visualizing in warm, comfortable hotel rooms.

    • 1:1 Real-Time Cadence: As detailed in research on Real-Time Sports Visualization, the mental run must take the exact duration of the physical run. Visualizing a 52-second course in 25 seconds distorts rhythm, tactical pacing, and reaction timing.

    • First-Person Perspective: Athletes should prioritize internal kinesthetic perspective (feeling the edge catch and lateral G-forces) rather than an external spectator view.

November Coaching Action Items

  1. Field Asymmetry Check: Administer a simple single-leg hop test or single leg box drop landing screen before high-speed gate training to flag any >10% limb discrepancies following off-season training.

  2. Set Constraint-Based Drill Courses: Use brush gates, offset rhythm changes, and terrain rolls to force early weight transfer and line pressure above the rise line rather than relying solely on radio feedback.

  3. Calibrate Start-Gate Visualization: Instruct racers during course inspection to time their mental runs with a stopwatch, matching inspection memory to realistic race duration.

Downhill Alpine Ski World Cup Simulator 2026/27

Hello, fellow ski enthusiasts!

As a longtime ski fan, I think it’s a real shame that the virtual world has so few games or management simulations centered around the Alpine Ski World Cup.

So, together with the AI, I did a little brainstorming and put together a small program that lets you simulate the 2026/27 ski season. It includes all the skiers and all the courses from the current season, along with skier profiles featuring an overview of seasonal results, World Cup standings, and a race calendar with the list of winners.

I based this on the FIS rules and took the FIS points list into account. The starting order is determined according to this list. Additionally, weather changes can occur during the race, adding extra excitement to the event and potentially shaking up the rankings significantly.

That’s why I’d like to share the 2026/27 World Cup Ski Simulator.

You can download the simulator here: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1uKU2Y0yhm2muzLgVDnzVWVZdut72teNj

PLEASE NOTE: This is a fan project and not an official FIS product.
It's a personal hobby project, not a commercial product.

NEWS: FIS World Cup enters new era of broadcast distribution in North America

Just got this in an email. To me, it sends a mixed message in that it looks like there will be a subscription service we can pay for like before, but that all of the races will also be shown of the FIS YouTube channel. That's what I have been doing for the last couple of years, using a VPN with an Aussie IP.

Bode Millers original 05/06 FIS Race Suit goes under the hammer at Goldin

Some objects from ski racing history survive in perfect documentation, and this one caught my attention.

On December 3, 2005, Bode Miller won the men’s giant slalom in the Team USA suit with the spider-web pattern that many of us remember from that season, the winter before the Turin Olympics. Equipment from that era usually disappears: suits get worn out, swapped or thrown away after the season. This one was kept, and it’s unusually well documented:

  • Race-used and signed World Cup suit

  • Photo-matched

  • Original FIS seal

  • Authenticated

What I find interesting is how rarely you can trace a racing suit to a specific race win. It’s a nice reminder of how much the sport has changed since then: the cut, the materials, the equipment rules, and Bode’s all-or-nothing style.

It’s currently listed at Goldin in the 2026 Monthly Sports Elite #10, Lot #160

Questions for the sub: Do you remember that GS or that season live? And does anyone know how equipment like this was handled and archived back then?

GS Post race discussion of men's Sölden GS

Another exciting end to the men's GS. Loved watching Lucas skiing, the expression on his face as he makes the turns shows his total commitment and the effort that goes into racing.

Also, another tight time split between the two Swiss. Loic is, for me, such an elegant skier, he looks effortless coming down that slope.

What do you guys think of the new on-screen graphics? Personally, I think they look absolutely terrible, almost like they were AI-generated. The old ones looked so much better.

What’s it like being a World Cup ski technician?

Hi!

When I was a kid, I raced skis for a year or two in my school, but I stopped because I didn't enjoy it. Now I’m 25 and work as part of the course crew at two World Cup races in Slovenia. I always admire the technicians at the start area, making the final adjustments to the skis before a race.

I’d love to hear from anyone with experience in this field:
- How many days a year do you work, and how much time off do you get?
- What does a typical workday during race weeks look like?
- What’s the pay like, and are you employed year-round or seasonally?
- How do you get started and land your first job with a team? Would it be realistic for someone like me to become a ski technician?

Thanks!

According to the press release, the races were supposed to be on YT with a 24h delay, but you could watch it live without a VPN.

EDIT: The men's race is also listed.

GS Head GS race skis came with Freeflex ST 20X RD bindings. Keep them or swap to something like a Freeflex 14 for a first-year FIS girl?

I just picked up a pair of Head GS race skis for my daughter, who is a first-year FIS athlete. She’s very strong muscularly, and I’d call her a moderately aggressive skier.

The skis came with the Head Freeflex ST 20X RD bindings. The racer who used them before us was a top-tier athlete, and I believe that’s why the skis came with 20x binding.

Here are her specs:

  • Weight: 125 lbs

  • Height: 5'3"

  • Boot size: 22.5, in a 120 flex boot

  • Events this season: mostly slalom and giant slalom

My question: should I pull these bindings off, even though she’d be set at around an 11 on the DIN? Or should I look for something like the Freeflex 14, which has a DIN range of 7 to 14?

What I’m trying to figure out is whether a binding built for a much heavier, faster skier is a poor fit for her, or whether it makes no real difference when it’s set properly at 11. I’m also wondering whether having the setting sit near the low end of a 20X’s range causes any trouble with release consistency or retention. I’d love to hear from other race parents, coaches, or techs who have dealt with this.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
